Life threatening. Seriously. I have a chronic condition which if unsuccessfully treated often results in the necessity of removing a major organ, cancer, and sometimes death. My specialist recommended that I take drug«A» as the best option. Assurant denied this, claiming that drug«B» was as effective and lower cost, so we should try drug«B» first. But it took them two and a half months to reach this conclusion. So we then requested authorization for drug«B», which Assurant had told us to use first. It then took TWOMOREMONTHS for Assurant to approve use of drug«B». So 4.5 months in total to start treatment. After three months on drug«B», I am proven to be nonresponsive to it, and back to drug A. This time Assurant approved it after only a month. But it basically took eight and half months to get to the drug my specialist originally prescribed, during which time my condition worsened and my risk of major organ removal or cancer has gone up. Of course the doctors at Assurant know that the condition with which I have been diagnosed is potentially life threatening. But they still over-ride the patients’ doctors best recommendation based on cost. Hopefully I get healthy now that I am on drug«A». But at the very best, Assurant’s bureaucracy has cost me a least 8 months of health. At the worst, it might cost me years of life.

I just joined this insurance company after previously having Healthnet, and all I can say is «so far» Assurant is AWESOME. They are prompt and you don’t have to wait on hold forever as with other insurance companies, you do not get transferred from department to department, rather the person you are dealing with is proactive, and they do not overwhelm you with paperwork. I had a major surgery shortly after joining them and they have been nothing but efficient. Today I had a provider call that supposedly could not submit a claim(provider error); I called Assurant, got to a live body in 2 minutes, explained the situation, and the agent immediately called the provider, with me on conference call and told them to send the claim to her(Assurant agent), and it was resolved just like that! I haven’t had any big company be that efficient in a long long time. With most companies it’s the endless run around, and customer service nightmare; not with Assurant. I hope they continue to provide such good service.

I am sorry to say their customer support is pretty much non-existent. Need to update my payment info, been on hold for 1 hour 5 minutes… lol… I have nothing else to do but wait, so I thought I’d leave a review. A great company if you want to practice patience :) I hope I never have to actually use them in an emergency.

I have been paying tens of thousands every year(no kidding, family of 4) since 1995. It was called«Time» insurance then. In the 29 years since, they may have paid out $ 5k. I’m not going to put my personal medical information out there, but suffice it to say now that I really need them they are dragging their feet and putting me through hell. Requiring absurd paper work be completed by me an my physician. They lose it a require it again. Teleprompting hell. Delay, delay, delay. No common sense whatsoever.

After waiting for more than two weeks to find out if they would offer me coverage they upped my insurance quote by 200 dollars a month. To make things worse… The window of time allotted to me to obtain insurance without penalties has elapsed(I was laid off). To make things even worse… I had another offer for coverage but declined it… since Assurant was a preferred provider through USAA I was sure they’d be timely and professional… NOT!!! If you are looking for insurance… and it’s taking them more than 48 hrs… don’t bother.
