Within earshot of Uptown yet a million cultural worlds away from yuppie central is a new-ish falafel joint still trying to get off the ground. Falafel House is located in a Somali-dominated commercial district(right around the corner from Karmel). The space is small and sparse with little focus on aesthetics or ambiance — and the day we visited, it served as a community gathering spot where everyone seemed to know everyone else except us! The menu consists of only a handful of items, with falafel sandwich not even included in the mix. However, the man at the counter was eager to help and please, and assured us that falafel sandwiches were available. Took a few minutes to deliver the sandwich, served with a complimentary water bottle(apparently tap water was out of the question). I’m not a huge falafel lover, so it was going to be a challenge to really win me over with this sandwich. And, ultimately, I thought it was a-ok as far as falafels go. The falafels had a crisp shell with a soft, warm center that wasn’t terribly dry or mealy and were bundled up with lettuce, tomato, and onions in a pita drizzled with some high quality tahini. Hmmmm… fairly run-of-the-mill, maybe a bit above par. Would love to see them take it to the next level, i. e add a bit more spice in the falafel mixture and throw in some additional accouterments to jazz up the sandwich.

So glad to finally see this place open. I have been in two times. The first time I got the gyro sandwich, which was excellent. The pita was fresh, the tzatziki was great, and they included a small extra portion of tzatziki and a spicy green sauce with the gyro. It was exactly what I had been craving. The second time I went in, I ordered a falafel sandwich. The falafel was excellent and clearly made in-house. The only thing was, it was served with ranch dressing instead of a more traditional tahini or even tzatziki sauce and there were no onions on the sandwich. The next time I got in I will ask for a different sauce than ranch and will also add onions. Long story short: Definitely worth a stop in for an excellent gyro or falafel. Welcome to the neighborhood!

Under new ownership an will be getting their new menu around April 7 – 8. Ordered two falafel salads– excellent feta amount and quality, nice amount of black olive– seem canned, were tasty– and tomato. Came with hummus cup, ranch, spicy green sauce and tihini. Also ordered a side of fries which was fine too. Total was $ 15 Also had excellent Somali tea. I’m excited to see the complete menu and give it a go! I recommend this place and will be back.
