My first memory of Thai food was actually insipid Chinese food; it wasn’t until years later I realized that I never really ate Thai food when my family and I were in Thailand. When you travel with a Chinese tour group, you will end up eating Chinese food no matter where you go. Even if it’s way out of city limits or in some shady basement. So I was pretty mad when I realized that, which has been tempered since by eating at pretty great Thai places state-side. Gai Gai Thai entered my radar earlier last year when we started seeing them at the Kingsfield farmer’s market. Being late-risers though, they always were sold out of almost everything by the time we got here. Through North Coast Nosh and Unilocal elite events Jared and I finally got to taste Kris’ food. We really enjoyed the bits of what we had, like the mini veg pot pies or roasted beet salad. Good level of spice, fresh-tasting, and made with local ingredients appeal to our palates. I really looked forward to actually ordering from their kitchen, which finally happened today. We ordered the breakfast bowl, the garlic gai bowl, and the watermelon cup. Rice was cooked in coconut for a slightly sweet and creamy mouth-feel. Both bowls were garnished with chopped gai lan and pickled cabbage for some greenery and tang. The breakfast bowl was topped with an omlette filled with slices of Chinese sausage and the garlic gai had minced chicken in their garlic gai sauce. Both were pretty amazing with sweet, savory, sour, and spicy elements. This flavor combination was unusual but welcome. The watermelon cup was the same, with its mango, coconut and lime sauce. It was refreshing like straight up watermelon but leveled up for palates that want more complexity. Though Gai Gai Thai is not traditional Thai, Kris does an amazing job of taking its trademarks and applying them to the local and edible bounties of Minnesota. He was amazing friendly, too! With delicious food and a winning personality, you can’t go wrong with eating at Gai Gai Thai.

I first tried Gai Gai Thai at the Basilica Block Party. They catered the Vita. MN stage, and they had some lovely tacos. My coworker Angela decided that we should put the steak and thai sauce stuff together, which we decided was the best thing ever. Pretty much, I think anyone who likes thai food should hit this place up, its sometimes hard to find, but totally worth it.

With the street foods popping up left and right I got a clue from chef shack that they were going to be at the Kingsfield Farmets Market in Mpls along with a few other vendors, I decided to go check it out. I found GaiGai Thai at the end they were sold out of everything but chicken wings by the time I got there around 11:30.(the market is open from 8am-1pm) so I was a little disappointed but the guy at the booth asked if we would like samples of any of the food items and of course we said yes fresh off the grill crispy outside with tons of flavor and a tender juicy inside making the perfect grilled chicken. I had to get a order which were 6dollars. To quench my thirst I got a order of the Thai Iced Tea for $ 3. I hope the next time I catch them the food won’t be sold out because when he mentioned tofu curry that caught my interest for the near future til then I’ll dream about the wings I ate today. Also they mentioned they are there every Sunday along with the Fulton location on Saturdays and a third locations starting July.
