I love this place. The staff is knowledgeable and friendly. They did a great job on the tune up of my lawnmower. I’ll definitely be back. A true north side staple.

This place is great and locally owned. Much better than a trip to the circus(Menards). They have a huge rental dept… i’ve rented floor sanders and post hole diggers– very reasonable rates and deposits. Parking in rear. I’ve also had a lawnmower tune up, and screens re-screened reasonably. There is almost always some to greet you and ask if you need help finding something. Some prices are a little bit higher than the big box stores, but worth it. Also, the other day, bought $ 3 worth the bolts, realized i didn’t have any cash, so asked if they had a minimum for credit cards… yes, it was $ 1! A lot of small businesses have $ 5 or $ 10 min. for cc purchases, another reason to go here.

I love going to North End Hardware because everyone is so helpful and personable. I actually find prices are fairly comparable to the bigger corporate stores. It’s so much easier going to North End because I can just run in, grab what I need and be out in 10 minutes versus it taking me 10 minutes just to park and walk into the other big stores.

Granted I bought a house like a block away, that is 100 years old. Having a place like this nearby is a godsend. It is no HomeDepot, both the good and the bad. It is small but they know their stuff! I gladly pay their prices(I never feel overcharged) It is convenient, they’re knowledgeable, they’re a small local business, and I would HATE to see them go away. They’ve fixed my lawnmower, replaced glass in my window, rented a post hole digger… etc. I challenge you to ask them a question, I’ll 90% guarantee they’ll have an answer and help.

Picture it… my basement 2 years ago. I’m installing an ice maker on the bar fridge. The kit I bought at Home Depot looked easy enough. I was so wrong. I walk into NorthEnd with the box of stuff, and plastic water tubes hanging out all over. The guy takes one look at me. «doing an ice maker A?» me «ummm ya» him«well what can I do for ya? Looks like that kit’s not doing what you want it to» I go on to explain that the back of my fridge looks nothing like the pictures on the box for the kit. I use words like thingie, whatchmacallit, I sigh alot. This guy walk me over to the corner and looks in this bin of what to me looks like trash. He pulls out a washer, a small length of tube, and some nut thing. screws it all together. hands it to me and tells me how to make it work with the kit that I have. This miracle he created for me fits in the palm of my hand. I just stare at it.(thinking this is so NOT going to work) I walk up front to pay. There is no price on this thing. he hollers from the back. it’s .45 yes that’s right .45 cents for this thing. I pay for it and go home. It fits perfectly. it is EXACTLY what needed to be there. So the ice maker works, all is good. I go back about a month later to get a screwdriver or something. Same guy greets me at the back door. First words out of his mouth. «Hey how is that ice maker working?» Could have pushed me over with a feather. How did he remember me? How does he do that? They are that good, that’s how. I have been back many times since for stuff. I NEVER feel I am over charged. I have never been talked down to, I have never been made to feel dumb. This is the best place to go if you are trying to learn and are willing to listen.

The first stop for things around the home. Darryl and his crew are great and awesome supporters of community events. This is where I take my lawnmower when I need a tune up. It is so great to have a place that you can walk for this. Need paint? They got it! Need to rent a sod cutter? They rent all sorts of equipment. And if you don’t want to run all the way to Home Depot, they have most anything you need for emergency situations. Rumor has it, that they are sponsoring a community garden just south of the hardware store later this spring. WOOHOO!

Holy god. I bought a nice handle for my new bi-fold bathroom closet door. The screw it came with was not long enough to mount the knob. I came in here, and they didn’t have the right sized screw. The guy I talked to said, «well how about if I take this one that would otherwise work for you downstairs and grind it down to an inch and three-quarters?» Yes, thank you so much! I also was doing some touch-up painting in the spare bedroom, but didn’t have any of the original paint left. I had a piece of painted masking tape from around the light switch though, and this guy had a machine that perfectly matched the color without even knowing what the original paint brand was! How cool is that?! The people here are just so helpful and willing to do whatever it takes — not so I’ll come back, but just because they genuinely seem to want to make things easier for me — that I had to come back and update to five stars despite the sparse hours.
