Nobody at the desk. Fifteen minute wait for shuttle Then the shuttle driver tells us we need to go to the other airport to pick up a passenger waiting there. Definitely below average.

The rudest customer service I have EVER experienced. I was supposed to receive an emailed receipt after dropping off the car. Of course, I never received it. The final bill was about $ 14 more than the quoted price. So I called to see the discrepancy. The customer service rep, who didn’t speak good English, was the rudest POS I’ve ever spoken to on a customer service call. As I was asking questions, she talked all over me. I had to literally tell her can you please stop talking so that you can actually address my question… like seriously. Then she tells me that she cannot see my bill, but she can send me a copy of my bill. Huh? What is the point of calling customer service if I have a bill related issue if you cannot see my bill? Then she indicates it can take up to a full day just to receive the bill via email? Huh are we living in 1985… a whole day to receive an email? By the end of the conversation she was saying rude things like «are you not listening to me?» Really? So I asked for a supervisor, and this POS hangs up the phone! Is this the way it works there – are these calls not monitored? Yea, I will NEVER take the chance and rent a car from Payless ever again. The rudest POS I’ve ever communicated with as far as customer service. Save your time and money!

Terrible experience and dirty vehicle! Their facility is approximately 10 minutes from the airport — they provide a shuttle (driver was friendly). To complete your reservation you enter a modular building that has no queuing system so everyone stands around waiting to be helped. There were only two clerks to process reservations so it took us approximately 40 minutes to get keys. The car they provided had stains on every seat. I asked about this and the response was «yah, those are our most rented cars so they’re all like that.» The clerk gave me another set of keys to see if it was better — it was worse. I would not rent from this company ever again.

I would give this establishment a higher rating as they were inexpensive and quick. Then I received my final statement from them showing a late fee charge. The ticket stated I returned the car at a time that was in fact 3 hours later than when I actually returned it. I didn’t get a timestamp from the girl at the counter when I returned the vehicle as she was «busy» but told me not to worry because she would take care of everything. I called the company immediately to dispute the charge. I have been going back and forth with them for 9 days now and still né refund in the near future. This is a shady business with horrible customer service. Do not get duped by them like I did. I will gladly pay a few extra dollars a day at enterprise where they know the customer comes first and they go out of the way to provide exceptional service.

Good Experience! I had to write a review! I was reading all the bad reviews and wasn’t going to rent from them because of it but did because of the price. I rented Wed thru Sunday and i have to say i had the best experience. I got a 2014 Camry and it did have a few dings but the car was great. I only gave a 4 rating because of being offsite but they came within 10 – 15 minutes to pick me up. On return, it only took 10 – 15 minutes because I wanted a receipt and they dropped me off at check-​in and i was there in no time. So give them a try! Just beware that you pick your car up offsite.

I have been standing in line for almost an hour, waiting for the ONE rental agent who spends a solid 10 – 15 minutes with each customer due to archaic procedures. This wait of course, is after traipsing all over the rental center trying to follow minimal, confusing signage. Note — payless is not with the main rental agencies. Unless you have plenty of time and a screaming low rate, STAY AWAY.

Stay away!
They changed their hours and are not 24 hours anymore. I was unaware of this change as I have reserved here many times before. Somehow they let you make reservations to pick up the car while they are closed! I called the next day and I was reassured I would not be charged. Liars. I was charged the next day and told I would need to pay the $ 50 cancellation fee. I never received any confirmation of the reservation either.
I have contested the charge with my cc company and canceled my reservation minus the $ 50 fee from a very combative sales rep. No words can describe the incompetence of Payless. I will never reserve a car here again and will encourage others to stay away from them like the plague. If you can get your «non-​refundable» amount from Hotwire you would thinkPayless could do the same. They obviously can, but won’t.
Here’s your $ 50 in negative publicity Payless.

We are currently in a Ford Transit van as it was the one of two cars available; the other option was a Nissan Versa… We reserved a full size car but were advised those were our only two choices.
The other issues:
#1 MSP signage to find Payless was ridiculously difficult and it was hard to find
Upon arrival at the counter, we were greeted with a sign to call service desk. I called on my mobile and was immediately placed on hold; I then used the phone present and got someone right away?
I thought the website stated Payless was located in the airport terminal but in fact is a long shuttle drive.
Upon arrival the service person was nice but only two cars available?
We are now in the van and it is DIRTY and there is trash in the door’s map pockets!
Truly horrible experience and was not the way to start the vacation.

What a joke. Never again. If I hadn’t prepaid through Hotwire for insurance I would have bailed on this company. I waited 1 hour for the counter to open. I called the local number in their website and was told on 3 different calls to wait. I didn’t realize it was off site too! Avoid!!!

We rented a full size car for a week. When making our reservation, we were not aware that Payless does not rent cars from the airport, their facility is almost 10 minutes away offsite.
If I could tell Payless about my experience, it would be:
–Your clerks need to have the same information as your telephone reservationists. I was told on 3 separate calls that AARP allowed me a second driver free. On location, clerk said no, checked with her supervisor, said «well just this one time.»
–You need to clean your cars. Ours had not been washed or vacuumed, was very dirty.
–You need to check whether anything about your cars is broken. The right front seat was so low the passenger couldn’t see out. We tried to fix it, couldn’t.
–You need to ask people about things like that when they bring a car back. You still don’t know about the seat problem, bc your clerk didn’t ask. You need to elicit feedback and make notes.
More generally, Payless needs to invest some in the Minneapolis location. It looks terrible. The man checking the cars scribbles on a scrap of paper that you take inside (in our case in the rain). The clerks do the minimum procedure smilingly, but with conversation with each other between operations. It’s just generally unprofessional. I felt I ought to be getting a reduced rate for lack of niceness and it was the same price as Thrifty (which is in the airport) for a very sub-​par experience.

This review is NOT about the MSP location (they were nice people) but it is about Payless Car Rental «customer service» that you will likely need to call in order to get your deposit refunded.
If I could give a NEGATIVE 5 stars I would.
In short, do not expect to get any type of customer service when calling to inquire about the refund of your deposit. Expect to be spoken at and talked over, not listened to, and hung up on. Writing to them via their online forum is useless. You will get a canned response with no real answer. Also, you can expect to be given your deposit back (eventually) less a penny – a penny – for no reason other than these people are trying to be petty jerks.
Clearly they haven’t heard that there are many other rental options out there. I will NEVER rent from them again and I hope no one else does either.

Rented a car from here last week. There is a kiosk at MSP airport where you «check in» for your reservation. There is a quirky older lady that works there, but she was nice. We originally reserved a compact car, but as there were none left, we were upgraded to an economy/​mid size vehicle at no charge. She initially asked us if we wanted to pay $ 10 – 15 more to upgrade, but I took my chance and said no and got the upgrade for free anyway. The shuttle driver picked us up from MSP and then took us to their off-​site location on 78^th. It was about a 10 minute drive from the airport to the lot. By the way, the shuttle driver was exceptionally nice (Minnesota Nice?) and introduced himself and made small talk.
The car was all ready by the time we got there, and we had a Hyundai Sonata. We also bought gas through the rental place ($ 25) and were able to bring it back empty with no extra charges. We only used about half a tank of gas for 3 days of rental. So, this is something to weigh and consider.
On our return, it was just as quick and easy. We gave the keys to the guy at the front desk, he checked the car, had no issues, and had our receipt in hand. We did have to wait several minutes before we could get on the shuttle back to MSP (as there were others dropping off their car as well). The shuttle driver took all passengers back to their departing terminals at the airport.

Second time in two weeks renting from this outfit. Both cars were dirty and smelled bad inside (smoker smell).
Today I was surprised they added a damage waiver to my daily rate bringing it to $ 40 for a Ford Focus! Almost twice the going rate for that car.
When I asked for it to be fixed the attendant pulled out a calculator to demonstrate that the math was right.
That was the last time I will use this outfit at MSP.

Check your bank statements after you rent here. I was told they didnt charge me the $ 100 deposit but sure enough it showed up the next day on my account. Do NOT buy their gas. It is not actually cheaper for them to fill it up for you because I paid for a full tank through them… with absolutely no way of knowing how much the car actually needed. I did not end up using the full tank and there was no reimbursement. I purchased a $ 13 car for the day and ended up being charged $ 172 in extra fees, deposits, taxes, recreational concession fees, renters taxes, vehicle taxes and more. Do not fall for this scam like I did. This is false advertising at its finest.

Rented a car from here via Hotwire last weekend. My only (small) issue was that in the Humphrey terminal, it wasn’t obviously clear where the shuttle would pick you up. There was a small unoccupied office with a sign on the phone saying to dial for assistance with Payless. Since I saw no shuttles, I called and the (very helpful) attendant guided me to the shuttle driver.
It took less than 10 minutes from the terminal to the location and once there, staff was prompt and courteous. We did a walk around the car together and I was off! Total time from exiting aircraft to driving away in my very own Kia = 40 minutes.
Returning the vehicle was just as simple — I was out of the car and heading through security within 25 minutes.
This was my first experience with Payless and if you aren’t worried about a little extra time to deal with an off-​airport agency, it’s totally worth the money you save!

Great rates, friendly staff, good cars, but not the cleanest. You do have to shuttle to and from the airport, so allow time in your travels for that. Don’t waste your time with prepaid gas… there’s a reasonably-​priced gas station just as you exit I-​494 to return the car.

You betcha, this rental service is good.
If you’re going Payless, you’ve chosen ‘em because of the name of the business and the lesser cost of the quote, probably online. I did. The «economy» cars at this place are truly economy; I had no choice but to upgrade when I saw what my four-​person family would be attempting to shuttle the Minneapolis streets with. Economy means two-​door for this company, so don’t mess around if you’re a cheap-​skate like me, upgrade. I did. I’m a few weeks past the return date and I’ve heard nothing about dings or damages, so I’m happy.
Several reviews cover the basics on this one. When you shlep your family off the plane and gather your luggage, you find out there isn’t an airport lot for the cars, hence Payless. But the shuttle is on point, they’re ready to pick you up, and in about ten minutes you’re on the lot where you’ll pick up your recently upgraded vehicle. We got a Ford Focus. The driver of the vehicle (me) certainly enjoyed revving the engine around the Twin Cities.
True to another review, they didn’t do an inspection of the vehicle at drop-​off, not with me, anyway. That stinks of Payless sketch. That said, no dents were reported (we didn’t have any) and the ten minute ride back to the airport was smooth. We really liked the employees («Everyone in the Midwest is so friendly!») and as a native, I dug that the driver was listening in on the Twins game, apparently they were beating the Yankees, but that doesn’t mean very much this year. Cool company. Prepare for the upgrade. You betcha.

Everyone in the Midwest is so friendly! We only had the car for a day, but it was quick to pick up and drop off.
They somehow convinced my husband to upgrade to a Charger. I thought the Yaris would be fine for the day, it was half the cost, but he always upgrades. He wanted to feel like Walter White for a day.
The lot is a little farther from the airport, but they had shuttles waiting so it wasn’t a big deal.
I would use them again if I’m ever in Minneapolis and want to feel like Walter White. Friendly staff, quick service, and no hidden costs.

Desk at the airport, but no signage as to where it is.
Very friendly young lady at the desk checking folks in, but the other odd part is one is not checking in to rent from Payless but it is called Ace. There is paperwork with one name on one side and the other in the other side. When asked if we will be getting a particular car as shown on the rental agreement I am told they do not use that car but will be getting a Toyota. All in all it is fine with me as long as the car runs and has enough leg room. I did find this vehicle difficult to get in and out of but once in it drove well and used gas sparingly.
Yes they are off airport, the only rental company that is but the shuttle was quick and the drivers friendly if not a little distracted in traffic. But we did get to and from safely.

Their address listed in a orbitz or trevelocity search make them look like they are in airport… but they only have a desk their! Service was excellent, but savings wasn’t worth the extra effort = shuttle, return procedure, etc!
