Root Salon

I came to Root simply because I could book an appointment online and Kristine was available when I needed the appointment. I am SO happy those two variables lead me to her! She gave me the most AMAZING balayage and hair cut. She is the best. I live in Los Angeles and will definitely wait to come back to MN to have her do it again. Kristine is extremely talented but is also so sweet and very easy/​fun to talk to!

I can’t say enough about this salon. I’ve been bouncing around from salon to salon and finally found my home at root salon. I saw ann S. For my highlights about a month ago and am still so thrilled with them! Ann listened to what I wanted and exceeded my expectations. They are so natural and I get compliments all the time. Added bonus the front desk was so sweet. Highly recommend ann for highlights!!!

Came to Root off a referral from a friend after moving from Uptown to Linden Hills and saw Kathryn. I am in love with this place! I love the lighting and natural light that comes in and they use Wella product. If you go red, you will appreciate this as it holds better and lasts longer than some of the other color lines. Kathryn was great and nailed my color! Would def recommend coming here.

I went to Root on the suggestion of my wife. I’m glad I took her advice. On the surface, Root appears to be a very female-​centric shop. Their website details many skilled stylists and all the cuts they can do on long hair. With some stylists stating they have experience in «Men’s Haircuts.» However, when I went I received the best haircut I’ve ever had.
I saw Meaghan, listed as an intern but very skilled. She started with a shampoo and very relaxing head massage. Then she did the cut, listening to my vague description of what I wanted, and knocked it out of the park! The shape of the cut was fantastic, her attention to detail made me feel confident that I was being attended to by a pro. She concluded the hour-​long session with a rinse and another scalp massage. I will definitely be headed here for all my hair needs from now on!
I give it a 4 and not a 5 because while the service is great, the feel of the shop may not be for everyone. I think it is great, but it is a very open floor plan and you’re relatively close to other customers.

I had my hair done by a stylist named Emily a few weeks back. I have dabbled around a few salons before landing here. I cannot tell you how thrilled I was about my hair. I had a full foil of blonde highlights and a cut on my thin blonde hair. It turned out better than I could have expected and cannot stop raving about the atmosphere, décor, friendly staff, and of course my hair.
It is on the 2^nd floor so that is something to keep in mind if you have a challenge with stairs. It is located in the downtown Linden Hills neighborhood so I was able to meet up with friends afterward for drinks with my new look.

I flew in for a wedding for my girlfriend’s family. As we were eating at Tilia’s down the street (get the fish sandwich), my girlfriend noticed how horrendous the back of my neck looked. Feeling embarrassed (the wedding was for her family) I needed to find a place to fix my problem before the weeding that afternoon.
We stopped in on a whim hoping the recent snow storm deterred enough business to allow a walk-​in, and that I could regain the missed feelings of, «Minnesota nice.»
The salon had beautiful wood floors, lots of natural light, and modern hair stations. I was not needing a haircut — just a neck trim. I have never been here before and wasn’t interested in paying 10 dollars for the 2 minutes required to trim my neck.
After hesitating of going back to my usual 9.99 hair cutter, Krista, a beautiful brunette, said she would give me a trim for free.
Even though it was a free trim, Krista was still trying to hear my story and offer suggestions. Although I’ve never spent more than the cost of buying my own hair trimmer; I’m going to go back to see the inevitable difference between my backyard buzzer and what Krista and the Root Salon can do!

I visited Root for the first time last weekend for some color work. First of all, I asked how long the appointment might take so I knew if my dog would be ok waiting in the car since it was a mild day — and was told to bring him in — they’re pet friendly! Um, how did I not know this before?! This should be promoted much more! I was so excited, and it made my day of errands much easier, which was great. But I digress — the salon is upstairs on the second level. It’s a cool historic building. The gal at the front desk gave me a friendly greeting and offered me a beverage. She also made sure my dog got a snack. :)
My color was done by Krista, who was very attentive when I described what I was trying to achieve. She used a technique to apply the color in select places that I had never seen before — but it turned out great! I’m thrilled with the look, and she was fun to chat with.
The other stylists seemed very nice as well — and so did the other customers — I guess you get to meet a lot of people with a lot of smiles when you’ve got a big friendly dog with you at your appointment. :) The environment is modern, bright, and feels sunny even on an overcast MN winter day. I did see that there was a very negative review for the salon but felt comfortable trying it out since I had been referred by a friend. I’m not sure what stylist the other reviewer saw but that would be helpful info to know. Overall my experience was great and I’ll be back.

I used to see Krista when she was in Chicago. She is Amaze! I miss her tremendously. I am the type of client that loves change and she is always on it. She is very up to date with current trends and seems to always be taking some class to better herself; I know because I always let her try out her new techniques on me. If you are looking for a good solid haircut that will grow out great, Krista is your girl! Go check her out.

I cannot even express my disappointment or anger at this salon. As you can see from my reviews I rated the St. Paul location very highly. I did NOT have a good experience at the Minneapolis location. My hair was done by an inexperienced colorist and left unfinished. She also left me under the heat so long that my hair broke off at the end. When I complained to management I was told I would receive a call in THREE DAYS. I never received a call, so I had to contact them again. At this point I was so turned off that I did not even want Root to fix my hair. I was told the only remedy was for me to come in and have the owner look at it with the original colorist. All I asked was for a refund for PART of my services, and they would not even do that. I will never support Root again and plan on telling everyone I know about the horrible experience I had.
