umm, weird. I’ve driven by it two-dozen times but never noticed it. It is so close to the UofM that I don’t know why they don’t push to get the hangover crowd from the amazing Frat parties thrown all over town. Great portion size, typical breakfast place pricing and really just overall, a good place to go to cure my 3-day hangover.

I would rate this joint higher, but i think a 4 or 5 should be for exceptional restaurants… That being said, I have never been disappointed here. Always find myself coming back. reasonable prices and the cooks here are very good. I’ve only had breakfast here. Omelettes, hash brown dishes, country fried steak, steak and eggs, all good. Wait staff is very cordial. This place is kinda hidden, there seems to be a regular crowd, but check it out. For price and quality you will not be disappointed.

I was looking for a good breakfast one cold morning and I have no idea how I stumbled here. The place is very tricky to find but there’s a street sign. I went in, cozy and warm, with an absolute sweet waitress. Got me a grilled tilapia(I’m trying to stay healthy haha) with mashed potatoes and brown bread and I enjoyed every bite! Amazing food for a good price, definitely coming back. Oh and unlike the previous reviews, not a single fly was seen in Square Peg today. 5 starts service and food!

What a goofy little spot. It’s in an office building. The service was hard to beat, especially for a group of nine rather hungover biddies the morning after our friend’s bachelorette party. Our waitress just«got» us… and she also got us plenty of water. The food was solidly no-frills, greasy spoon diner stuff. And pretty cheap. I went with The Deuce, which is like a loaded hashbrowns with eggs, pepperjack, mushrooms, peppers, onions. And a side of bacon, because yum. It was good, but the Bayou is better(my friend got that and I pilfered some onto my plate). It’s basically the same, but with andouille sausage and cajun hollandaise too. The server was pretty impressed with the aggressive«YES» when she asked us if we wanted hot sauce, so she brought us homemade hot sauce, sriracha and tabasco. Gotta catch ‘em all. Everything aside from this last thing was great, but I just can’t really recommend this place fully because there was a serious fruit fly situation going on at our table. I’m not really that grossed out by many things(I’ve been known to fish out a mosquito or two from a wine glass without batting an eye), but fruit flies can indicate a much larger cleanliness problem. The ventilation in the restaurant is slim to none and we were all spending breakfast swatting away tiny flies. It was causing a little dry heaving on my part. I hope they get that under control.

A bit tough to find but worth it. The place looked like diners of yesteryear but the food and service were top notch. I had the square pancake, my wife had the deuce. There were many locals there so you know this must be a hidden gem. From time to order to getting food was short. The Waitperson was very attentive and talkative(only of you wanted to chat). She was not pushy, but very friendly and outgoing. The pancake was wonderful with just the right amount of topping. The deuce turned out to be good as well but more than my wife could eat. Is that a bad thing? When we go back to MN we will be stopping here for breakfast again.

I set out, bright-eyed and bushy-tailed, to try a new place for breakfast. Would it be a breath of fresh air or a square peg in a round hole? At first, I was a little unsure of its location. Fortunately they placed a small sign near the street. There it was, right under my nose in the Hennepin Square building. Its just off to the side of the building away from Hennepin Av. Square Peg has the makings of a country diner, without the country. Its kind of a fish out of water in the Minneapolis breakfast scene, but worth a try. After a brief perusal of the diner staples on the menu, I elected to get the day’s special, eggs, ham, hash browns and toast. The coffee was mellow and just what the doctor ordered. My food arrived just as I was finishing my cup. Eggs over medium were done well. The ham slice was tasty. The loaded hashbrowns smelled great but were overloaded with a slice of american cheese food product. Why do they call it cheese food? Does cheese eat? A little delicate surgery removed the offending cheese replicant from what was otherwise a decent take on hash browns. The server was friendly, the food was served promptly and overall was pretty good.

The restaurant location is kind of weird(it’s located in the ground floor of an office building). The food was a-ok and very affordable. The service was pleasant. I ordered the eggs benedict. The eggs came out beautifully. The hollandaise was nice and tangy. I only wished they werent so skimpy with it cos I like my benedict with lots of hollandaise. I requested the crispy hash brown, and it came out very crispy though borderline burnt, which was no problem for me cos I hate mushy bland potato. I also ordered the steak and blue salad to take home for the bf. I requested the steak medium. When I took it home, the steak turned out to be well done, but it was still tender, and my bf still liked it.

I’ve been here twice after discovering it is within walking distance of my home. Points for convenience and pretty reasonable prices. Unfortunately, Square Peg doesn’t make very impressive breakfast food. The first time I visited I had the eggs Benedict, which by themselves were pretty good. The hash browns, however, left much to be desired. This time I opted for the American Fries instead, which were sadly just as bad. Guess I’m picky about my potatoes. My toast was burnt and my cheese omelet was a trip to Dullsville. The coffee is decent, but I can’t say I will be returning anytime soon.

This place might as well be in Timbuktu, but it’s actually on East Hennepin, 2 blocks east of Stinson. It’s in an office building. It looked pretty sketchy(well as sketchy as you can get in an office building) from the outside. But after we got inside it looked like a little mom and pop resturant that you might find up north. This was actually The Boy’s first comment«Did we somehow take a road trip into Wisconsin?» You might find Bob Barker here, because the price is right.(Wow, that was dorky!) But seriously, compared to most Twin Cities breakfast establishments, this place is cheap-as-hell. The same meal The Boy had last Sunday at BandBox cost $ 4 less here. That’s 5.95 for toast, hashbrowns, two eggs & sausage. And he was full! Miracles. I had the daily special«Berry Blast French Toast» It was berry bread with a shit ton of blueberries on top. With Bacon. For $ 6.95! The coffee was shitty, but honestly, I didn’t even care. I had bacon. Plus, since I am über thrifty, I pulled out my Happenings coupon and we got our whole she-bang for get this: $ 9.34. And the waitress was super friendly. The only complaint I have is that we waited over five minutes to even get a menu, and they weren’t that busy. And when we did get one, we got ONE to share. This was corrected quickly by our real waitress. Anyhoo, I think this place would be good for a Sunday brunch with a bunch of people because there are several large tables, and the menu is fairly huge for a place of this size. I will be back, mostly because there were so many things that sounded delicious!

There’s nothing fancy about this greasy spoon but it’s quick and cheap and that’s good enough for me. Its location in the back corner of an office building makes it a bit hard to find which is probably why it’s not usually busy over lunch rush. I suppose this is the last, best diner in the area between Dinkytown and the Quarry since the one at Stinson & Kennedy(ack, the name escapes me now) closed a few years ago. Also there’s lots of pictures of race cars on the walls. PS: Unilocal’s map of this location is way wrong.
