Are you down for old school group dancing and fun? Then you’ve found the place! I’ve attended both the Tapestry’s Contra Dance and Techo Contra this year. The dances are easy to follow for the most part, the Caller will lead the group through the whole dance at the beginning, and if you don’t feel ready or need a break you can always sit out a dance and watch. It’s a lively activity and the regulars are welcoming to new folks. The key is if you don’t know the steps completely it’s important to not step out because you’ll throw the whole chain of dancers off. Be ready to participate, move your feet, and don’t be afraid to ask someone to dance, especially the seasoned pros in attendance! And don’t be fooled, contra dancing can be an intense workout.

I enjoyed the contra dance last night. I brought a newbie who felt welcome and was able to catch on quickly with clear instructions. We also went to beginner Hambo lessons which were good.

I liked this place because it reminded me of Ashkenaz(sp?) dance studio in Berkeley, California, and I think that every large city should have at least one dance(mixed use, really) studio run in accordance with the spirit of the 1970’s. Looking at the studio calendar, there were certainly plenty of events of the type you wouldn’t normally see at a dance studio(e.g drum circles and folk dances from countries you may not even know to exist) . While I did like it, I’m only givng Tapestry 3* because I didn’t care for the traction of the floor(slippery in parts, sticky in others), and because it seemed to lack character(just a big, open dance floor).
