The Silver Tool Box might not be the weirdest store of all time, but it’s almost certainly the weirdest store in Minneapolis. Daniel, the proprietor, lives below the storefront and you must ring a bell for entrance. It bears mentioning that he is mad as a hatter. No, really. Had I not specifically sought out his store based on a recommendation, I wouldn’t have stayed past introductions. The first time I visited The Silver Toolbox, it took me two hours to buy the ten or so items on my list. Most of that time was spent following Daniel around, enduring his bad jokes and deflecting the Great Silversmithing Inquisition. Was I taking a class? Where? Who was my teacher? Was I an art student? Had I considered beading? He quizzed me in math, science and on my knowledge of jewelry making tools. Oh, and the whole time his dog, French Fry(as angry as she is small), sneers and growls at you from her bed in the middle of the shop. I don’t mean to portray my experiences at The Silver Took Box in a negative light. I’m incredibly grateful for the resource, and Daniel has taught me a lot. He’s been making jewelry for decades, and he’s always willing to answer my newb questions while I pick up supplies. The store is full of interesting things to look at — lots of jewelry. Just don’t expect to run in quick and grab only what you need. There are plenty of supplies, but they may not be readily apparent, which means you will end up having a long conversation with the owner. In other words, the heckling is mandatory, but it’s also free.

Went looking for some equipment for one of my hobbies and found this place on the Web, Figured I was in town so lets drop in. Daniel is open from 9am to 5pm, however you need to knock to be let in. His little dog is upset with visitors. What you find inside is a collection of 40+ years of working in the industry, from finished items to parts and tools. Not sure of all of his prices, however the item I came for was a good price, and I left happy. I am not sure if I will make it back but in my case the trip was worth it.
