Since the Highland Games have been called off this year — and may or may not be held again — I figured it would be appropriate to(finally) pen/type my review for them. I really have little to no idea why there even exists a Mint Hill Highland Games. You can make a bit of a connection to the Lake Norman Scottish Festival and Highland Games, what with the Loch Norman name and all — but Mint Hill? A bit more of a challenge there. As to the event itself: A bit on the weak side. Being in Mint Hill presents a bit of a challenge, simply because there exists a certain contingent that doesn’t want to come out to this side of town. That is understood. Once they do, they likely want to see themed events. For this event, that meant… «haggis» served from a food truck/trailer shaped something like a cottage. Was it authentic haggis? I have actually never had haggis, so I don’t think so. But I can’t really say. The fact that they had haggis at all was good, but it wasn’t really enough to save this event. There were also a handful of exhibits, such as one from the raptor center, a tent with celtic music and some of those that show you your history on scrolls and whatnot. The promised sporting events(caber toss, etc) either never existed or took so long to happen that they might as well not have happened. All in all it was a bit disappointing. I’m not terribly surprised that the event was canceled this year. It would be nice if it had taken off, but this doesn’t seem to be the event to do it. And now it seems as if Mint Hill Madness may be taking a few months off as well!
