This gorgeous park in downtown Mobile is shaded by massive 165 year old live oaks. The park was created in 1850, and named after the founder of Mobile and Governor of French Louisiana, Jean-Baptiste Le Moyne, Sieur de Bienville. In the center of the park sits a three tier cast iron fountain surrounded by park benches. On the side of the park facing Dauphin Street, you’ll notice a large St. Andrew’s cross erected in 1906, also in honor of Sieur de Bienville. The park is definitely one of the most beautiful areas of Mobile. You can relax under the oaks and appreciate the architecture of the 1800’s on Dauphin, and also the architecture of the 2000’s with the RSA towers towering above the other buildings. This park is a great place for a picnic or just to sit and read a book or Kindle. They actually have free public wifi. Bienville Square is also host to many local events such as music festivals, the annual lighting of the trees, not to mention, it’s a great place for revelers to enjoy Mardi Gras parades. Any time we spend the day in downtown Mobile, a walk through Bienville Square is a must. It’s a local treasure.
