I’ve gotten my self propelled mower fixed here 2 times now, for different problems. They have, both times, had it fixed within two or three days. Took a star away due to the fact that the kid who«helped» me load the lawn mower said it wouldn’t fit and walked away, well… I brought it up there myself and had to load it there myself. Oh well, at least the mower works, for cheap repair prices.

All in all this is a decent mom and pop hardware store to shop at for all your hardware needs. Most of the staff there are friendly and very helpful which is rarely(if ever) seen at Lowes or Home Depot. However I have to take away some stars and here’s why: A few years back I had a gas powered weed trimmer that would not start so I took it to Dawes to get it fixed. They called about 4 days later to inform me that it was ready which was perfect because it was on a Thursday and I planned to cut grass that weekend. While using it that following Saturday I kept smelling gasoline but really didn’t pay too much regard to it at first… that was until I noticed the whole backside of my leg was soaked with gas all the way down to my foot, a major safety hazard! I immediately turned it off and noticed it was coming from the gas cap. I figured I had either not secured it tightly or cross-treaded the cap but this was not the case as the cap was on tight and was not cross threaded. Puzzled, I started it up again and continued my work. I immediately smelled gas and noticed it was still coming from the area around the gas cap. This time it had my full attention. I took the gas cap off and right away I noticed there was a part that snapped under the cap that had a retention chain that was attached to a plastic anchor-like device that rested inside the fuel tank. Well folks, this part was missing! I didn’t get angry; I simply took it back to Dawes and explained the problem to them that I had a missing part. The lady at the counter summoned the tech that fixed it(I think he was the store owner’s son) and when I explained the problem to him he in a rather curt apathetic manner said«it wasn’t there when I worked on it!» I thought oh boy here we go! Yes, it damn well was there when I had it otherwise it would have leaked gasoline down my leg all the 10 years I previously owned it! Instead of arguing I figured it was going to be my word against his, which for the most part was going to be a losing battle. Bottom line, his short little chubby butt didn’t want to be held responsible for HIS careless negligence! I ordered another cap online for about $ 10 which had the missing part. Upon installation the gasoline leak ceased and has never leaked again. Dawes Hardware pretty much shot themselves in the foot by pulling this stunt! From now on when I need a lawnmower or weed trimmer fixed I go elsewhere! I now only use Dawes Hardware for convenience if I need something hardware related.

Not a Lowe’s or Home Depot, but the people are friendly, will show you exactly where what you are looking for is. Also, they are the only place I’ve found in west mobile that carries a 16×30AC filter.
