Wintzell’s Oyster House

First time to Wintzell’s and I have to say the oysters were sweet and tasty the gumbo is gratuitous and the bread pudding with vanilla icecream was rediculus, thank you for a great itroduction. Oh and Stephen and Reggie are great hosts.

So we have been in the area for 3 months and have been trying different seafood places. This one is a old time family joint. There are a lot of clever sayings all over the walls and the staff are really good. Everyone was friendly and the manager even came by to check on you. I had the fried fish plate and it was alright. The portion was generous and the tarter sauce tasted homemade. The hubs got the shrimp po’boy and it was loaded with shrimp. There was so much shrimp it was falling off. The fries were nothing special. The atmosphere is comfortable and defiantly a family place if you have kids with you. A solid place to go.

Mr. Mendoza and the entire staff deliver great food in a casual atmosphere with good prices. Whether it’s just a quick dip in for lunch for some of their awesome gumbo and bread pudding or if it’s a night out with the family, this is the place to go. Oysters on the half shell, grilled or fried and did I mention the gumbo and bread pudding? If you only go to one restaurant in West Mobile then make this the spot.

I was disappointed in the low country boil. The few shrimp there were were over cooked very hard and there was no flavor. Small shrimp are never good for boiling. Wintze lbs you are better than that.

We went for an early dinner, around 6:30pm. The parking lot was full but the place had a lot of seating and no waiting. We decided to sit at the bar and we were served our drinks immediately. The menu has a ton to choose from however, when at an Oyster restaurant. I’m ordering OYSTERS !! They had a special on raw oysters at $ 7.99 doz. I ordered the dozen and they were shucked right in front of us. Served on ice with lemon, horseradish and 3 sauces. They were so fresh and delicious, I could have gone for another dozen. We also ordered the fish tacos and a fried seafood alfredo. I think the fish tacos were blackened cod, not sure… but they were tasty. I tasted a bit of the seafood alfredo w/​eggplant, it was very flavorful and rich. My dinner-​mate loves anything friend so the fried eggplant, friend shrimp, fried oysters over alfredo was a huge hit. The portion was way to big to too finish.
I would recommend this place for any seafood lover, especially if you like oysters.
Service was fast and friendly, place was inviting and clean and the price was worth it.
Will totally be back here to have more oysters.

somewhat allergen friendly as they were able to grill my catfish (served with the best sweet potato fries I’ve ever had) — yum.
DH had: fried clab claw basket (too many to eat them all) & the oyster sampler (holy moly! he really enjoyed all of the different combinations — bacon/​cheese, creamed spinach, parmesan/​garlic butter, cheesy)
Overall deliciousness & great service!

I usually go to the wintzell’s downtown when i’m in mobile but today since i was driving from the airport and haven’t had lunch i thouggt to stop by into this wintzell’s by airport road. it was around 3:30pm, place was not even crowded, handful of folks at the bar and only a few tables occupied. i was by myself and being a small, asian lady, i opted for a table rather than the bar. i was seated in a booth next to a family and the area was somewhat in the middle of the dining area needless to say, servers would have to walk by me to go to the tables bu the window. so i was seated by the hostess and was told that the server would be with me shortly. i sat there with the menu for about 5 minutes. no one approached me even just to ask for my choice of beverage. i have read the whole menu several times. i’ve put the menu down, craned my neck to be noticed. still no one approached me but the table next to me with the family was being attended to, and i felt like their server (which i wasn’t sure if my server as well) wasn’t even making eye contact with me, like i was invisible. she went to their table a couple times. by about 10 minutes, the hostess sat a party of 3 by the windows, and in less than a minute, their drinks were served, a couple minutes later, the server (same one that served the family next to me) had been to their table twice already. i had been sitting in the same spot for fifteen minutes now– with no drinks or even water, menu on my table and still being ignored. so, i stood up and left, mentioning to the hostess on my way out that i have been sitting for at least 15 minutes without being served. i am bringing my business elsewhere as i am very disapppointed bu this branch’s customer service.

Come here whenever I am in town. The seafood is so fresh. There isn’t anything on the menu that isn’t good! Service is great and we never wait too long for out food! Can be pricey but definitely a place to come whenever you are in Mobile!

Here visiting from San Francisco California, had a waiter this Monday night who got us started on happy hour when we walked in, he was amazing the food was good. Thank you very much DANIEL, for the amazing service! We had a great night :)

Fantastic oysters! Char grilled were good and the raw were excellent! Small lunch portions but high quality. A Mobile icon!

Our server was exceptional; however, food was not good at all. We had fried pickles, tasted like salt and the breading. You couldn’t even taste the pickle. My husband had the gumbo which was salty. I had cream of crab soup and it looked like a glob on the plate. Salty. We got wings and lump cake. Wings were good. Lump cake salty. It would be the equivalent of drinking saltwater as your beverage. Not good at all. But service was superb.

I ordered fish in a skillet and my fish was so wet it was disgusting. I took three bites and i couldnt take anymote. The waiter took my plate and acted like he didnt notice that i had not eated anything. I will never be back at this location.

The best thing I can say is the baked potato was excellent and the manager took the cost of both my and my husband’s dinner off the bill after we sent both back to the kitchen. The red beans/​rice with chicken/​sausage — the chicken was so hard it wasn’t to be eaten and the beans were off flavored. The fried oysters and hush puppies were over cooked — fried HARD, again not to be eaten. The crab soup was so thick it was pasty like a old gravy and not served hot enough. I’ve eaten here several times and wouldn’t say this is normal for them or I wouldn’t be a repeat customer. I would recommend this restaurant provided they get back on track. Be prepared for the restaurant to be loud.

Great lunch!
My wife, daughter and I had a wonderful lunch today at Wintzell’s. The service was friendly — downright neighborly — and the food was good old fashioned Southern traditional with a nice curveball on one dish.
My red beans and rice with chicken and sausage was delicious. My wife loved her fried shrimp basket, and my daughter had a special set of baked oysters with crab meat and parmesan cheese. The on, y problem was that we ran out of appetite before our plates were clean!
I highly recommend this local treasure.

Great food, the service was spot on, and the prices aren’t bad at all for their serving sizes. We will certainly be back when we are on this side of the bay. The jerk chicken chili nachos are absolutely fantastic!

Expensive place to dine, but the chargrilled oysters are the BEST I have ever had! Yum! The atmosphere is casual and comfortable! My husband had the seafood au gratin and loved it. Great staff, attentive to our needs!

Our service was fantastic and the food was very good. I had the shrimp n grits it was good! The service was really great they tailored the dish for my mom to not be spicy. Sister loved her blackened shrimp. Fried green tomatoes were good and shrimp in all our dishes cooked perfectly. Not sure what other reviewers were fussin about this place is worth a try! Lunch menu has good value in our opinion.

Oyster basket. Fresh oysters in a good batter. Food came out fast at lunch. Decent service. Bar needs to clean to rid the vinegar smell and those tiny black flies. Overall good and would do again.

This place is great. Everyone was very friendly from the moment we walked in. The manager even stopped by our table. The oysters were HUGE and tasty. The gumbo was good, light on the spice but very flavorful. I had the fried seafood platter. Its enough food for 3 people.
We will definitely be back.

*for ambiance I prefer the downtown location but it’s not convenient after a long plane ride
