Filet mignon, when cooked right, melts in your mouth. If you just cook it like any other steak or slab of meat, it loses its potential as the best cut. That being said Jacob’s cooks it right. The filet I had at Jacob’s was cooked to perfection. It was flavorful and had the perfect texture. While the location was different than what I expected(strip mall), the food exceeded my expectations. I would highly recommend this restaurant.

Wonderful meal, fantastic ambiance, prices reasonable, portions generous, wine delicious, what more can you ask for? Our first time here tonight. I had the steak with Gorgonzola sauce and it was to die for. He had the steak and shrimp scampi and it was perfect. We loved everything, we will definitely go back soon!

My husband and I dined at Jacob’s last week. Although we had no reservation, we were seated quickly and our drink order was taken. After perusing the menu, we decided on the Salmon Special with pineapple salsa and vegetables over grilled pineapple. I chose the vegetarian risotto. For appetizer, my husband selected the clam chowder and I the Caesar salad. Bread was served with a lovely sundried tomato oil; very tasty. Contrary to another review, the Caesar salad was good, not overly dressed and VERY generous portion. Unfortunately, when I was 2/3’s of the way finished, the server asked if I was done. I don’t know, but I resent folks taking my food before I make a gesture that my plate can be cleared. My husband’s chowder was blah… no real clam flavor. As for the entre’s, my husband was happy with his, although he never saw the salsa; my risotto arrived barely warm and although nicely flavored, was prepared with regular rice, not arborio, so the texture was off and was lacking the creaminess of regular risotto. My husband chose a white chocolate with raspberry cheesecake which he liked. All in all, our meal was only okay… I’ll not likely return.

I never thought that the most pretentious thing I’d ever read would be on the rug outside of a little strip mall restaurant in Modesto. «The Art of Fine Dining.» Great joke. It was like a challenge to me, as if to say«I’m going to make you an enjoyable dinner AFTER irritating you.» It didn’t work. THEGIST: Out of stock on half their specials at 6:00pm dinner /Decent food /Hardly a work of «art.» SERVICEANDSETTING It’s actually really nice inside, very clean and modern though the highly impersonal setting hardly struck me as «fine dining.» But I didn’t go in expecting fine dining. Even then though, a non-fine dining establishment would at least have most of their food in stock. No exaggeration, the first thing we heard as one of the first dinner parties at 6:00pm was that half their specials were out. Then we asked about the crab cakes, and those were out. Then we asked what the hell was still there. Finally, when their 2 item dessert menu was given to us, we were once again told after ordering it that one of those two desserts were also out. What a joke. Seriously, it’s not dining if there isn’t even any food left to serve at the beginning of the night. FOODHIGHLIGHTS Wild Mushroom Risotto: The mushrooms were a little undercooked for this dish, but it was overall decent. The risotto was cooked almost al dente and the sauce was sufficiently creamy and tasty. Caesar Salad: If the dressing is made in-house, they’d better change their recipe soon before they get sued by Kraft for making a dressing that tastes exactly like theirs. The leaves didn’t seem very fresh and the croutons just tasted burnt. AVOID. NY Strip Steak with Gorgonzola/bacon topping: This is a monstrosity straight out of Epic Meal Time. I just had to order it because of how ridiculously over the top it is. A strip steak already a beautiful, delicious thing, why do you need to dress it up in the richest and fattiest combination of flavors possible to make it a meal? That’s exactly what I got from my first bite here, and I had to kick the cheese/bacon aside to eat with my mashed potatoes instead. Halibut, crab cakes, lobster, tiramisu, happy customers: lol, sorry we’re all out of those CONCLUSION Does«fine dining» involve having nothing in your stocks to even serve your food? The food that they actually had left was decent, but I shouldn’t have to jump through hoops to figure out what on the menu is actually there. It was bad when we thought it was just the specials, but it just got comical after they told us there’s only one out of two desserts available. I’ll pass.

The best part about our meal was the waiter Matthew! He was fantastic and was charming. A couple things, we came on a Thursday night. So, it was dead. We were the only people in the place besides a large party in the banquet room. We had the bread with a sun dried tomato bruschetta spread. It literally had no taste. The butter had more taste than that. My salad was good except it came deconstructed which I thought was odd. It was awkward to get the dressing equally over it. My calamari steak had zero taste. It was so bland and underwhelming. I left here really disappointed. b

For some reason, Unilocal chose to remove my previous review of this restaurant, but I’ll try again. Approximately 20 of us gathered for my uncle’s 80th birthday. From the second I walked in until the second I walked out, Jacob’s was a disaster! When I arrived at 5:50pm for our 6pm reservation, there were 2 hostesses manning the completely empty dining room. I was told that they did not have a reservation under the name I had given. They stated that they had a party of 7 for 7pm. Not knowing how many people had been invited to the party, I assumed it was my uncle’s party and I had gotten the time wrong. I waited in the completely empty bar for approximately 15 minutes when an older gentleman walked in with a gift in his hand. I didn’t know him, but asked him if he was there for my uncle’s birthday. He said yes, and some woman was taking him back to the banquet room. There sat ALL of my uncle’s friends and family!!! What on earth is wrong with those hostesses and bartender? Then, the food. Most people ordered the steak. Nobody was asked how they would like it cooked. I ordered chicken marsala and my server asked me if I’d like it with red or white sauce??? The steaks came out in varying degrees of doneness, yet all were served tepid, at best. Some were inedible. 2 of us sent our mashed potatoes back because they contained RAW potatoes(about ¼ of a potato). No manager ever made him/herself present. We served ourselves our own wine. It got to be comical it was so horrible. My aunt went in to speak to the manager a few days later about our experience, to which the manager merely stated«we’re working on it». This is the WORST place I’ve ever been in my life!!!

We visited as part of a group on a weeknight. The place was empty except for a seminar taking place down the hall. I won’t hold Jacob’s responsible for the meh wine our host served with dinner. But I wasn’t impressed by the food or the bar. As part of a group, I had limited menu choices. The only appealing item was the New York steak. I wasn’t the only one to choose the steak. Plate after plate of the NY steak came out to my fellow diners. They must’ve run out of the NY steak, because I was served a Rib-Eye. What’re you going to do? Complain in front of the people you have to work with every day. How awkward was this? Everyone in the room who ordered steak, got the NY steak – except me. Really? And you just put it in front of me without saying anything, hoping I won’t know the difference. Service was ok and I have no idea on the prices, but there are much better places to eat in Modesto than this tired, mediocre restaurant. Sorry, there’s nothing for me to get excited about here. No reason for me to go back. That’s too bad.

After having to find my way to my father’s 80th birthday party and then having a mediocre steak served on partially mashed potatoes(big lump of uncooked potato, not appetizing) that were cold and Serving sizes that were small. Yeah, I would never go there again or recommend anyone else going there. I could understand if the place were packed, absolutely empty when I walked in. The server did not know the menu either. What would ever make me go back there?

I loved this little place. For being so small they had a lot of people, one to seat one to give you water, However its the little older lady that takes your order and answers any questions. Food was great and they were very accommodating. I have a food allergy and asked them if they could make my food different, and«of course«was my answer. Service can be a Little slow but it is well worth it. For 2 of us it was well priced, considering you get bread and some sun dried tomato spread, your get salad or soup with your meal a good portioned meal. He had the chicken cor den blue I had chicken florin tine, we had 3 glasses of wine total and a piece of cheesecake to take home, all for about $ 75.

The food here is really good when it’s done right, a solid 4 stars. Unfortunately consistency varies greatly. It’s never been bad, but runs most often middle of the road or just a tad above that. I’m giving them four stars because of service. Read below. Filet Mignon is my favorite dish and here the filet is huge, about 30 to 40% larger than what Galletto’s or Dewz serves. It’s also $ 12-$ 15 dollars cheaper than those two establishments and includes a dinner salad. When cooked perfectly it cuts like butter and melts in your mouth. It comes with a beurre blanc mushroom sauce but I don’t recommend the sauce unless you really like wine. Instead opt for sautéed mushrooms or the roasted garlic and gorgonzola cheese with bacon topping instead. Sides included are garlic mashed potatoes and fresh steamed vegetables. Both are excellent. Be sure to specify exactly how you want your meat cooked. The filet is so thick they have a tendency to undercook it so take that into consideration. Other stand out dishes here are Chicken Cordon Bleu, Mushroom Ravioli with Walnut Gorgonzola cream sauce, and their bread. Yum! More often than not the restaurant is dead because they sustain themselves on catering and banquets. I don’t mind sharing the place with only a few patrons, I prefer it. If you want quiet ambiance this is the place. Service from the owner is excellent and he’s always friendly. All proprietors should treat their guests like this. I’d much rather be served by him than some of the wait staff. There’s an older waitress here who is fantastic as well. I’m guessing she owns part of the place as well. The downside of this restaurant is the location. Right near the .99 cent store and Party Store. Not what you’d think of upscale. Pricing on some dishes is spot on, others such as pasta fairly steep at around $ 22-$ 28 per plate. For a filet mignon, understandable, for pasta not so much. If you’ve never been here do stop in and give it a try, I’m certain you’ll have a wonderful meal.

This place is horrible! Me and my wife herd a good review and decided to give it a try. I ordered the Chipotle chicken let me just say it tasted like the worst frozen in a bag chicken one could make. It also came with rice that tasted 100% like rice a roni. I am convinced they are serving boxed food! So tonight stay at home and cook s meal I promise it will be better. Unless u like spending $ 30 dollars on rice a roni.

We came here for lunch and had a great time. No only was the service good, the food was great. I had the Halibut with a delicious sauce on top. It was cooked to perfection! I also had the Wedge salad which I could have easily had for my entire lunch. Big portions. My husband had the burger but did not like the bun it was served on. the flavor of the meat was good; not so good French fries. All in all, good ambience, friendly, and you get your money’s worth. A rarity today.

What a lovely evening we had at Jacobs! Once again the Second Tuesday Gang got together for dinner and Jacobs’ was our choice this month. I had called ahead for a dinner reservation but it really wasn’t necessary. There was plenty of room. We were given a very nice table and we had our waiter’s full attention. We can be a challenge as a group as two of us are elderly. I always watch the wait staff to see how they interact with seniors. I was very impressed with our waiter’s patience and kindness, the way he spoke to our mothers and the obvious respect he paid to them. The food was wonderful. Mom has been raving about her Calamari Steak. Marla thought her pork was a little sweet(too much balsamic vinegar) but she thought it was good. My NY steak was cooked to perfection and Joan loved her halibut. All in all this was a wonderful dining experience. I look forward to trying the Blue Sage.

I went to Jacobs for a benefit and jazz concert this past Saturday night. I asked the waitresses three times if the food had gluten because I’m ALLERGIC. They told me no. I asked twice if I could speak to the chef they said he was too busy! Needless to say I had a severe reaction because there was gluten in my meal and it ruined my entire evening! I had to leave ½ hour into the concert. As I was leaving a staff member I spoke to said, I’m sorry but it’s too late now! Gluten is a poison for people with celiac. I’ve been in pain for two days now. These people were obviously negligent, didn’t give a shit and/or were too ignorant to be working at a so called«fine dining» establishment.

Gotta go with crowd on this one… very nice restaurant, service was good, but food was 3 star. Was that really italian dressing out of a foodservice jug? Geez, make your own — come on!
