Ancient and mysterious Monhegan Island Cemetery has been around for at least 1784 and perhaps even longer. It’s the only graveyard on the island and is still active today. Hard to say where the people that lived earlier were buried but it probably was just anywhere there was room and not in a specific area. The graveyard today is sober and spooky. There are mostly simple gravestones and some are remarkably well persevered. Pretty amazing considering the very harsh environment. Other old stones haven’t fared as well and are impossible to read or even realize they were gravestones if they weren’t in a cemetery. The views are lovely from the graveyard and it’s fascinating looking at the ancient stones and wondering who these people were and what kind of lives they led. Of course they are lots of stories about ghosts of men that lost their lives crashing into the many rocks surrounding the island. The graveyard is just so spooky and old that it’s easy to see how the stories started. A wonderful, eerie, mysterious and very spooky old graveyard that is lovely place of peace for the people that called this isolated and harsh island their home.
