Pete’s Place is another of those independent diners/restaurants that are the jewels of small towns in the USA. There is no pretention here, just a friendly welcome and plain, good food. As one example, the pancakes have as little in common with the typical Bisquik imposter as a fine cheese has with a processed one. All baking is done on the premises and it shews in the quality of the breads, pies and confections like their cinnamon rolls, doughnuts and biscuits. As previously remarked, hiker supplies are also available, primarily as a service to Appalachian Trail hikers, and, while hardly inexpensive, spare hikers staying at nearby hostels and B&Bs the need to travel further afield, though that would be advantageous for a full re-supply. Well worth a detour to visit and heartily recommended. (It’s open 7 days a week from May 1st to around November 1st and from 5 a.m. to 7 p.m. weekdays; weekend closing should be checked.)

LOVED this place! My boyfriend and I ate here(3 times) when we stayed in town to resupply during our Appalachian Trail thru-hike. Because this place is basically one of about three or four places in Monson to resupply before venturing into the 100-Mile Wilderness, prices are pretty steep… and by steep I mean one package of Knorr Rice Sides for $ 2. Either way, the food and service here is exceptional. Neal and Colleen are two of the nicest business owners around and work very hard here! The 100-Miler breakfast is humongous and totally worth it if you’re a hungry hiker. The french toast is out of this world — made on nice thick homemade bread — and as a previous reviewer mentioned, you’re basically doing yourself a disservice if you don’t order a cinnamon roll. Definitely come here if you’re stopping in Monson for a bit, which I’m sure you will if you’re a thru-hiker. Even if you’re not, you will NOT be let down if you come here for breakfast or a sandwich!

Neal is the short-order cook. Great selection of breakfast choices, including the 100-Miler feast. They offer a number of baked items, including big yummy cinnamon rolls and some of the best«basic» wheat bread I’ve ever had. A basic hiker re-supply is available, but geared a bit more to augment a mail drop than provide a full 6 – 10 day menu beyond Lipton sides and treats. Some additional items, more along the snack types of food, plus some decent beer selection, is available just south at the Irving gas station.

After I was injured on the Appalachian Trail, I stopped into Pete’s Place to see what they had to offer hikers. They have everything! Best place in Monson to shop. The owners are very pleasant and accommodating. Best bacon and eggs on the planet! The restaurant is quaint and very homey, like mother’s kitchen. Colorful cloths adorn every little table, and the aroma of hot coffee fills the air. Colleen has a bakery with fresh breads and fresh donuts on Mondays and Fridays. Even Phil Pepin delivers his clients to Pete’s Place for breakfast before heading to Katahdin. The best part of the store, at least from a hiker’s standpoint, is the resupply options.
