So I used to go to the Max’s in E.O. Everyone was so sweet, they loved me and I loved them… but once I found out they had a location in Montclair, due to proximity I started going here. The women there were nice and did a fabulous job at first but once they successfully hooked, line and sinker’d me it all went down hill. They started charging me a lot. and i mean a lot… granted at the time I had A LOT and i mean A LOT of hair. I’m brasilian & black, my hair was extremely thick and long. I went to the EO location for about 3 years, when I firstr started theyre for a wash/roller set/blow it was $ 25… by the 3rd year it was $ 45… and I had to bring my ticket from the previous week every time bc if there was a new girl she would try to raise the price. When i started at Montclair they gave me the price of $ 75… what?! I told them I used to pay $ 45 at the E. O location, but the response, «mami ju have lotta hair, lotta hair iza more money please». We agreed at $ 55 but i was pissed… Granted, they’re paying Montclair rent and such, but I feel like that was too much. I found receipt from the EO location during my 3rd visit there and showed them it, the front desk lady looked at it, threw it out and told me $ 55… fine i’ll bite the bullet… Eventually I knew I would have to reconsider this location when i was greeted with eye rolling, teeth sucking and when the ladies started talking bad(I speak spanish) and just like another girl mentioned the«pelo malo» thing, they did the same with me but said much more… and BEFORE the hate talk initiated they would always ask, «mami tu ta dominicana?((are you domincan?)» I would say, «what?» and they would smile and say, «oh ju no speaka spanish?» and i would say no. They would smile and then the s**t talking began… and not just about me… BUTTHEMAJORITYOFTHEGIRLSTHERE. And they would do the same thing with me with other girls when they came in with a lot of hair that they clearly didn’t want to service, suck their teeth and roll the eyes… I mean, us thick hair girls are paying the most! if anything you’d think they’d try to keep our business relations top notch… Even asking a simple task, like I always ask them to turn the heat low(to avoid heat damage since i would go almost every two weeks) and I don’t mind spending extra time to extend the«LIFE» of my hair… but the response, stylist: «no mami, ju hava thick hair, ju needatha heat». me: «oh yeah! i understand, but i don’t want heat damage» stylist:pushes my head back under dryer and cranks it up: I stopped going to them for a while but unfortunately, when I found myself pressed for time and needed that magic dominican blow out, always ended up going back and it just got worse and worse with the attitude, to the point where I think they were damaging my hair purposely. The last time I went the washer was detangling my hair with a fine tooth combed… while it was wet… :gasps in horror: lolz i know my natural ladies are CRINGING right now lol… so long story short, enter at your own risk, if your hair is thin and you just want a $ 15 doobie. go for it… otherwise be ready for heat damage, breakage, poor attitude and phoniness.

Worst fucking place to go to. If you have semi or course hair, they tell you they can do it but really cant. Apply to much heat in your head. Instead of the salon experience, you get the feel of your momma’s kitchen when she used to do your hair. Never again.

If you want a basic wash and set this is a decent place. It’s clean and isn’t very busy. I have a bob length hair and I get charged $ 25-I have thick, Black woman hair. It took a little while for the ladies to get acclimated with me. Now we’re buddies! They go beyond what’s necessary with heat. You go under the dryer for 45– 60 mins and then they insist on blow drying my roots because my hair is really thick. They just want it to look pretty, I guess. I like coming here. This is my go-to-place for simple hair washes.

I had to write a review so people know what they are getting into. I will be fair and provide one pro. Pro: They are all nice and genuine when it comes to greeting people… however Let me explain something to you guys. I went there for a roller set because i dont want so much heat damage on your hair(mind you i am an afrolatina with 4a type curls). They literally told me that they cant do roller set because my texture hair. And i was like oh k but when i went to another salon they did it. And i told them they just didnt know how to do it so i said whatever give me a blow out and not much heat because i didnt not want my hair so much straight. So they made fun of me in spanish and mind you I understand and speak it very well because i am from honduras. They made fun of me because i said i wanted a roller set and then the lady that was washing my hair said«no puedo porque tiene pelo malo». So mind you i just kept my cool. So this other lady keep showing me products like im going to buy it, like i am going to pay attention. I just laugh and said whatever. Then, they detangled my hair from my roots to my ends while my hair was dry and not wet and i see so much hair on the comb. They didnt even use a wide tooth comb!!! I was so mad at her and said do you even know how to style curly hair and she said this is how you detangle your hair. At this point i was furious and i notice they were cutting my hair WITHOUT my permission and it went from being around armpit length to neck length. Than she shown me my hair and said see so much breakage you needed to cut it. However ladies I trimmed my hair two weeks ago and it was in good condition before i ever went there. Than the lady didnt even do the style I wanted and scooted me out the chair. However i wished i never paid upfront or even tip her. Man… please please please guys look at the reviews before you go there. Yes i had the horrible experience but be sure of what you want and please DONOTPAYUPFRONT. My hair is now lopsided and she used so much heat i cant even bear it. Now i probably cant even look at my curls again because of this place.

I love this place! I work near by and can get a doobie without a wait. My hair has grown so much by following their recommendations. They actually use the same products in their own hair that they use in mine. I’ve been to a few doobie shops in my time and I leave there with bouncy, shiny, healthy, and never itchy hair. Need a wash, set, blow and no wait check these ladies out.

I was hesitant to go to this place because of the one bad review. But just like the individual who posted it, Max Doobie is close by to my home, so I decided to give it a shot. First things first. It’s a doobie spot. No one is expecting it to carry and use high end hair products. When you’re paying $ 15-$ 20 for a wash and set, you get precisely what you pay for. However, I would have to say if your agenda is to have your hair cleaned and your roots blown out, Max Doobie will get the job done. I went in on a Sunday, there was no wait, and I was out in an hour and forty five minutes. They weren’t violent with my new growth and the blow out came out bouncy and shiny. I would definitely go back again. And they spoke enough English to do business and they did not charge me up front. When I walked in, a lady asked me what I wanted done and I told her. She told me the price and I said ok and sat down at the shampoo bowl. No one was rude to me at any point.

Will never cross their threshold again. Regularly go to Juls. My stylist could not take a walk in. Dashed downed to Max’s for relaxer and rinse. MYHAIRISGREEN. Went back to Juls who had to chop off half my hair and do color correction. I still have a green haze in some light but now I don’t feel like a sister from another planet. But it will take months to out grow this horrible whatever process they did. Consider yourself warned!!!

Horrible, Horrible, Horrible Now, Max’s isn’t my primary salon. However, all I required was an emergency wash/set and Bangz couldn’t take me. Max’s was around the corner, inexpensive and empty… now I know why. 1. They charge their clients(who are 90% African American) upfront, how insulting. 2. They speak NO English. Everyone translates through one woman who is extremely rude. 3. The hair products are cheap. 4. None of the stylist appear to be licensed… cosmetology license, drivers license, etc.
