As a prospective tenant, I contacted Rosa Matsubara, the complex manager, and arranged a meeting. While not impressed with the actual apartment(it was rather small, especially the kitchen, for the price) and annoyed by Rosa’s chattiness, I liked the fact that the apartment comes with a central AC and W/D. Therefore, I passed Rosa’s contact information to my wife who set up another appointment — the following day – for both of us to come over and take another look at the place. My wife thought the location was OK(safe and quiet) … so we did not think twice before giving Rosa our rental application along with $ 20 in cash. «I will get back to you on Friday after running your credit,» reassured us Rosa. Friday came and went. We did not hear from Rosa. On Monday, seeing that she failed to run my credit(I get an email from a credit monitoring service every time somebody pulls my credit), I texted Rosa. No answer. I called and left a message. Nothing. My wife called as well. Still no answer. Fuming at being lied to(heck with the twenty bucks!) and against my advice(by then, I wanted nothing to do with Rosa), my wife called Rosa yet again. I guess she needed«closure» or something. This time Rosa answered the phone, «Can I call you back?» And she was gone … for good. Imagine if we actually had ended up renting the place and THEN needed something fixed in the apartment? What would it have taken to locate Rosa?
