Carpe Diem Fine Books is located in historic Old Monterey and offers a discriminating selection of out-of-print, signed, and unusual books covering many topics. However, their special emphasis seems to be on the history and literature of California and the West. Art work, maps, and prints are also available. These guys had a small version of their bookstore set up at the recent Genoa Cowboy Poetry & Music Festival in Nevada. And to Gayle’s light consternation, I spend a fair amount of time browsing and learning from the folks who made the long trip out from Monterey. I’m sure to return to the Mother Store next time…

Call first. I tried swinging by this shop on my way to Book Haven… although it was during their regular posted hours, they weren’t open! I was bummed, because it sounded like my kind of place. Like art galleries, shops that list hours including«by appointment,» as Carpe Diem does, tend to be small staff establishments that are juggling a lot… including the occasional off hours. I’m sure the place is great, but wish I could have seen it for myself. Next time.

This is a one of kind book store. You’ll find old books here that you can’t find anywhere else and the owner’s are not only knowledgeable, but give you the help and service we would like to see more often. It’s the best! Check it out when you are in Monterey!

This is a great used bookstore. They have a great inventory, especially of books on California history. Also, early California art.
