Stopped by to try a cannoli & the lady on the shift grabbed it w/her bare hands… I didn’t really like that. I’ve gone again recently & bought cupcakes, those were delicious. They were birthday cake cup cakes. I don’t think I’d wanna get something from there again anyways, even if those cup cakes were good.

Gales Ferry has Cow and Cones. This side of the river has Cakes and Cones. Now the two businesses are probably not related, but I see a naming trend. Not surprising, hard ice cream and cupcakes are sold here. What I like about this place is what I like about eastern Connecticut in general. This part of the state is very much Connecticut, but its cost of living and its people social graces are some things it shares more in common with the midwest than with the northeast. That’s a good thing. It means you’re likely to find reasonable prices and friendly people at Cakes and Cones. Such was the case one particular evening when driving up to Mohegan Sun(they’re about 3 miles south of the casino). Although their cupcakes aren’t very large, $ 2.50 is pretty cheap for any cupcake in the state or any part of the country for that matter. Their cupcakes are OK. What I didn’t like about them was the fact they contain a large portion of frosting. I have just as much a sweet tooth as the next guy, but having 50% of the cupcake consist of frosting was sugar overload on my tastebuds. I would have preferred more cake and less frosting, which I gotta imagine would benefit them as well because cake probably costs less than frosting. I didn’t try their ice cream. I’ll have to save that for another casino trip.

I’m a fan. Local ice cream place open till 10pm 7 days a week. Great milk shakes, hard and soft serve ice cream, and homemade cupcakes. The entire staff is friendly and they like their job, which says alot! Prices are totally reasonable compared to Ed’s Kitchen right up the street(which is known for freezer burnt over priced ice cream). 3 double scoop hot fudge sundaes was only $ 12. I will be back many times! I hope they stay open all year! 2 thumbs up guys!
