I stopped here once several years ago and didn’t remember much about it. However, I made a trip to Snowshoe last week and stopped in for some much needed provisions. The store itself was immaculate – unquestionably one of the cleanest, most organized grocery stores I’ve been to anywhere. As Louis noted, they have a great variety of healthy and alternative food. As a person who does not eat red meat or pork, the Food Lion had a great fresh turkey and poultry section. Also were a great variety of fruits and vegetables and a VARIETY of hummus. It is clear they try to cater to a variety of customers, which is uncommon for the area. The prices were reasonable, which also is nice for an area that is relatively remote and lacks much competition. The staff was very helpful and attentive. My cashier was very apologetic when she had to request a price check while I waited patiently and in no hurry at all. I really appreciate the small things and found an appreciation when it appeared the manager was stocking the shelves while his daughter worked throughout the store. I have never been anxious to return to a grocery store until now.

The Food Lion in Moorefield WV is the last major full-service grocery store between Washington/Philadelphia and Snowshoe WV or the Canaan Valley/Davis ski complexes. Once past that, there are some convenience stores, but as far as major food shopping, you have a 90-mile void to Snowshoe, a 40-mile void the other way to Davis or Canaan Valley, or a 30-mile empty stretch to Seneca Rocks National Recreation Area. The store is conveniently located on Route 55⁄28 with plenty of parking and a large and well-utilized space. I’ve seen a change in the 20 years plus that I’ve been traveling the area enroute to the ski areas and the Monongahela National Forest sites. They are seriously endeavoring to provide more fresh vegetables and fruits, more healthy items and additional healthy selections. That’s a welcome change in an area where the local population suffers from a serious obesity problem… And as well, they carry specialty items such as organic and soy products. Almost a definite stop for me… Clean, friendly and well stocked.
