Good food, we were passing through via I64 and like to try local places on Unilocal.Salsa needed a bit more heat so we added some of the hot sauce on the table. I had the beef fajitas and my BF had a burrito combo. I prefer more flavorful rice, it was good. The atmosphere is nice too, I like a Mexican restaurant(or any ethnic restaurants for that matter) which had music playing that reflects the culture.

It has been a long time since we have driven across the country from Iowa or Missouri to the Outer Banks of North Carolina. This time we are staying most of a month and driving was the obvious choice. On the way, we over-nighted at Morehead and as we often do, found a local Mexican restaurant for dinner. Mi Monterrey looked pretty popular on Unilocal and that was our choice. It is somewhat larger than it looks from the outside, they apparently have what would normally be two slots in their strip mall. It is what I call a cookie-cutter family Mexican place, with a gargantuan menu. I don’t go for chips and salsa, but it always deserves a comment. This was tasteless, just some canned, somewhat pureed tomatoes with a tiny bit of cilantro and onion chunks. There was no chile, no heat, really no seasoning at all to give it any character. The chips were fried in rancid oil or at least in oil that was past its prime. It gave a bitter aftertaste. I ordered Carnitas Tacos. They were billed as «street style». It is official, the term street style no longer has any meaning. Abuse of the term has made it to Morehead, Kentucky. Everyone has heard that it must be authentic to have street tacos. TGI Fridays has Street Taco Potato Skins, for crying out loud. At Mi Monterrey, street style means with lettuce and tomato just like Taco Bell serves. I headed that off by asking for cilantro and some chiles torreados. These turned out to be pretty good tacos when I added the chopped up grilled chiles and drizzled on some El Yucateco. The pork was very good, moist and flavorful. We recognize it as gringo food, but la Gringa with me likes ground beef and ordered a Taco Salad with that on top. This had a ton of the stuff(a little over-salted) and she liked it. Curiously enough the fried tortilla shell was not rancid, so we are not sure what the deal with the chips was.

Super fast and attentive service. I had 2 waiters and a host ask me if I needed anything at different times while dinning. The food was served hot and fast and the beer was super cold! They have a really good home made salsa as well.

Typical Mexican, but very well done. My children like the child sized taco salad.
