I was in Hazleton, WV on business and I tried Mountain State Brewing Co. on the the suggestion of Unilocal.I was not disappointed. The flat bread pizza was delicious and reminded me of the Flabread Company, Canton CT. I’m a big fan of trying craft beers when traveling. If it’s your first time here I’d recommend the beer flight. For me the stout was a bit light for a stout, and the IPA was on the light hoppy side. But the flavors were still delicious, fresh, cold and very enjoyable. I would have loved one of the desert flatbreads, but they only come in a size large enough for sharing 4 – 6 people. This place would be great for a group to share multiple variations of flat bread pizzas and toppings. Maybe it’s because I was there on a Monday, but the bar area was absolutely empty. This is definitely not the kind of place where you can mingle with strangers or meet a new someone special; but, a great place to go with a group of friends.

If you like pulled pork and spicy foods you MUST try the«wild boar» sandwich. It is an overnight fire roasted pulled pork sandwich on a bun!

My friend had been raving about Mountain State Brewing Company and their amazing flatbread pizza with okay beer. When we arrived around lunch time, we were unfortunately greeted with the news that the wood-fired pizza oven was down until a part could be replaced the next day. Saddened by this news we decided to stay for beers anyway. We probably should have just moved on but we were only in town for the day. Since we were hungry we ordered a Wild Boar Sandwich to share. The pulled pork sandwich was really good but the beers were mediocre. We each ordered the flight of 4. The glasses were cute. But that’s the best thing about the flight. Cold Trail Blonde Ale tastes like Budweiser. That might be okay for some folks(including the students from nearby WVU), but not for me. Miner’s Daughter Oatmeal Stout was not even heavy enough to be a stout. I was not a fan of the Seneca IPA, but I’m not really into IPAs. So by default, Almost Heaven Amber Ale was the least offensive. And the name is definitely misleading. Service was good and the music was great. I might go back just to try the pizza since that seems to be what Mountain State Brewing Company does best. I just won’t wash it down with a pint.

A great unpretentious take on brewery fare. The menu is filled with solidly prepared, crowd pleasing options(flatbread, pulled pork, nachos, etc). The beer is very good. My favorite is the smoothly finished Miner’s Daughter Oatmeal Stout. I can’t say enough about the great service, food, and beverage that I have received in my several visits to MSB.

Drive through town and was looking for chill place closeby the WP Hotel by the river. Great food and only a short walk away!!! We were intrigued by the seasonanal special– the pumpkin pizza – and it was delicious! Who knew pumpkin spinach sausage nutmeg and all that good stuff made an awesome pizza? Dessert was amaaaaazing. Try the nutella smores flatbread. yum yum yum yum yum. And we topped if off with a hill billy float. If you want some sweet tropical deliciousness this is it! Can’t comment much on the beer since I was food mode all night and just got a cider, but 5 star food place chill people great restaurant.

Food: Good-to-great. Some of their pizzas are seriously delicious, and I’ve gotten a salad a few times, which has been consistently good. Atmosphere: Pretty awesome, love the big open space, and the coal stove in the middle is seriously cool. Beer: I want to like it, but I just don’t. It’s probably the biggest craft brewery in WV, they’ve had a lot of success, and I really love WV beer… just not Mountain State’s. It’s generally pretty bland and unadventurous… which is sad, considering the rest of the place is really working for me. I wouldn’t recommend visiting here as a craft brewery, but I would recommend a visit as a pretty damn good restaurant. Just avoid the beer. Cheers!

Cheesey bread rocks. IPA and Cold Trail Ale are quality beers. Sitting at the bar is a good deal if there is a long wait. Great place to try if you’re into beer and good pizza.

I stopped by for dinner on a recent work trip. It was insanely empty, which pretty much killed the ambiance. It definitely made it seem its more a college hang out. I had two different beers and both were just okay. It was empty, but service was relatively absent. I ordered buffalo chicken salad I was unsure of the sizes, but went with the small and it was more then enough. I did like that they had some healthier choices with the salad being roasted chicken instead of fried. I did wish their were some more veggies on the salad though, so many go well with ranch and buffalo sauce, seems you could beef this salad up.

Food is pretty good. Original but just average in preparation. Nothing fancy. Brews are pretty good, nothing special but decent. Staff is ok, our wait was really great but all the others were unhelpful and crabby. The dining room is fantastic. Wide open and welcoming. Bar is cool and a long one well organized. Probably have some good late night fun here. Two decks by the trail and the Mon River, open and sunny/starry or covered. Really cool. Play country music too much, not surprising round here but annoying to me. No alcohol until 1p Sunday’s WV law.

Pizza was great, beer not so great. I had the Yardsale pizza and it was fantastic — perfect balance of cheese, basil, proscuitto and black pepper. Thin crust and cooked to perfection. This is definitely a college type hangout with the spacious interior and the watered down beer. If you’re into craft breweries and unique beers you’ll be disappointed in their selections. I had the Miner’s Daughter’s Oatmal Stout and while they do mention on their menu it’s on the«lighter» side, stouts are known for being a bit heavy and rich in flavor. I wasn’t expecting to take a sip and reminice of my Miller Light college days. There wasn’t any depth or much flavor to this stout. My husband had the Pale Ale and again no hoppy punch but just flat watered down beers. Probably a good place for college students looking to drink alot but not for folks who are looking for some quality beers.

Stopped for dinner on a trek from Cleveland to DC. Atmosphere was awesome. Wasn’t a fan of the IPA but my fiancé loved it. They had several in-house, micro brew options. If I didn’t have to drive a few hundred miles the rest of that evening, I would’ve tried other brews. Had the pulled pork and it was arguably the best I’ve ever had. The salad was delicious, as well. I wish I asked what dressing was used. The cheesy bread appetizer we could’ve passed on. It was essentially a greasy, cheese flatbread-pizza without the tomato sauce. We were starving at the time, so whatever. We hope to return to Morgantown to visit more in depth sometime this year. I’m sure we’ll return to Mountain State for a meal or a beer or two. The location was really nice also.

I like this bar but when I first came in I was sure I would hate it, let me explain. It was a dark winter night with snow falling hard making road conditions horrible. I planed to stop by the brewery on a 5 hour trek from Charlottesville to Pittsburgh however the weather has slowed me down and I got there about 30 minutes before closing time. I was cold and tired came in sat down and was told to get up because they were readying the tables for closing and that I could drink at the bar. I was a bit miffed to get this type of reception. At the bar i was told that the kitchen had closed and my stomach would have to keep growling. Fine I said I’ll just have a flight of beer. The bartender handed me a sampler set that I had already been poured prior to me getting to the bar saying that somebody ordered it but I hadn’t drink it. Now i was pissed because the beer was warm and had been sitting there for a while and I was not sure if the original purchaser had already sipped on it or not. Redemption came however when the person next to me who was just picking up five stacks of pizza she had ordered offered to give me a couple slices since the kitchen have closed. I gratefully accepted. I thought this was super nice of her and when I was trying to leave and close out the bartender told me that there was no charge., Which was cool. He may have felt bad for just giving me someone else’s beer and not really working hard for it but all the same I appreciated the gesture. I feel my experience must be far from typical so it’s tough for me to judge. If i am ever back in the area I would like to give it a another try.

Let’s be real. Morgantown is a college town, which means there isn’t a lot of great food options. There’s a large number of inexpensive sandwich shops, places that serve wings, chains, etc, but when it comes to food you can rave about, it’s slim pickings. Meanwhile, Mountain State Brewing Company gives locals and visitors a reason to cheer. While the place is well known for homemade brews, the food won’t disappoint. And, neither will the service, which rivals any place in town, although that’s not saying much. For the out of college crowd there’s few better places in town to order a drink(or none at all), grab a pizza or good bbq and enjoy a meal. The pizzas here are darn good(for West Virginia standards) and the salads are made with crisp, fresh greens, rather than poor quality packaged iceberg as you’ll find at most chains in town, but our favorite was the apple butter pulled chicken, which is awesome! The pulled chicken is some of the best I’ve tasted, even in my detailed travels through the South. It’s juicy, flavorful, almost melts in your mouth and comes with a dipping container of apple butter BBQ which is amazing, literally. Come and try it. You wont regret it.

I went to Mountain State Brewing Co. with a large group last night. Given that there was something like 12 or more of us we ordered four of the large flatbread pizzas to share. I’ve been kind of «Eh» on flatbreads in the past but these were good! My half of the table ordered a regular pepperoni and the Cuban. Holy crapkins, the Cuban! It was sooooooo good!!! Sweet style pulled pork chunks, green pepper, red onion, light BBQ sauce, cheese, super thin, crispy, just blackened crust. Damn. We all REALLY liked it. The pepperoni was good too! Although I didn’t partake because I’m not much of a sweets person, my other table mates ordered the S’mores pizza and nearly foodgasmed. The atmosphere was really cool and surprisingly enough not overly loud. They have a cool drink menu and just an all around good vibe that is carried throughout.

If you do one thing in Morgantown, GOTOMOUNTAINSTATEBREWINGCOMPANY. Seriously, this place was super legit. I came on a very enthusiastic recommendation from a friend and I was not disappointed. The restaurant has a pretty rustic vibe, but is a very cool place to chill out as there was acoustic guitar being played when I went to dine. The service was great too so I was very happy with all of that. The highlight of this place though is the food/beer. I got a pesto prosciutto pizza, which was incredible. Paired that with a local brew — Almost Heaven Amber Ale, one of the best beers I’ve ever had. Will definitely be returning, probably many times, in the future.

I’m either really biased towards microbreweries, or I’ve had amazing experiences at all the microbreweries I’ve ever visited. Either way, this place is fantastic. The beer sampler is 100% worth it. You get their 4 house brews + the seasonal special. Their flatbread(aka pizza) is also wonderful. The«Fire on the Mountain» is the most popular, but if you’re not a meat-lover nor are into spicy things, I’d steer clear. My favorite pizza was one that wasn’t even on the menu: their«Gourmet Special Flatbread» at the time. I got a hummus-based pizza with onions and peppers(and chicken? I forget…), and it was out-of-this-world delicious. So, word to the wise, ask about the«Gourmet Special» before ordering. Service was friendly and fairly prompt, and if you get the chance to eat outside, you’ll have a beautiful view of the waterway. Prices are a bit steep, so you’ll want to make sure you get a unique pizza to make it worth the cost(i.e. if you just want a cheese pizza, go somewhere else). Overall, highly recommended!
