When I visit Mississippi, going to this auction with my parents is something I really enjoy doing. It’s always a good time and you never know what you’ll find here. Once, they had a set of Wusthof German knives, you know the ones you can never get for less than $ 200? I won the auction on them for $ 9. I have to say that again… I got a set of Wusthof knives for $ 9! I actually already had a brand new set I had just purchased about 6 months before, but c’mon… who wouldn’t want a second set for that price?! I remember when they hit the auction block… I saw the symbol and thought to myself, «I bet these people have no clue the value of these knives.» I leaned over to my mother and said, «bid and keep bidding until I tell you to stop.» Just wow! I’ve also picked up a beautiful lamp here, a brand new breakfast tray, a piece of Waterford Crystal, and other odds and ends. They do have a lot of pure junk here too, but hey, some people like their junk and their knick-knacks, so I don’t knock it. I’m just always on the look-out for the really good stuff that comes through from time to time. They also auction off large pieces of furniture. I’ve seen some really good furniture and if I had a way to get it back to Florida, I would have definitely bid on it. If your’e planning on purchasing a big piece, make sure to come in a truck because all items must be picked up when the auction ends that night. Make sure to come early for two reasons: 1) To get a place to park. The lot fills up quickly and may people end up parking on the street. 2) To have a chance to look around at all the items which are going to go up on the block. You can pick up and inspect the items to see if there’s any damage, etc. It will also give you a better idea of how much you’re willing to bid on a particular item. Smoking is allowed in the building. They have the room divided in half for smoking and non-smoking. But the smoke is everywhere. The division of the room is pointless if you ask me. Just a fair warning for those of you who are non-smokers. The auctioneers are really nice and they know my parents, so even though my checks are from Florida, they allow me to write them anyway. Which reminds me, they only take cash and checks here and there’s no ATM around to pull cash from. They have a great little concession area with all kinds of yummy stuff like hamburgers, catfish & hushpuppies, bbq sandwiches, cake, cookies, ice cream. It’s too long of a list for me to mention it all. The prices on the food are excellent too. Most things are between $ 2 and $ 4. If you’ve never been to an auction, you should stop by some time. You’re sure to have a good time. And you never know what you may find!
