If you are at an outdoor festival, make a beeline for Vegetarian Oasis. I had the black bean toastie in August at Buffalo’s Elmwood Festival of the Arts. Truly, as good as it gets.

oasis n 1. a small fertile or green area in a desert region. 2. a refuge, relief, or pleasant change from what is usual, annoying, difficult, etc. ok…so the moe. down festival at snow ridge ski resort wasn’t exactly a desert region, but long gone are the days of woodstock when quality food stands were a mere mirage(or maybe that was just the acid?!) at a music festival. a most pleasant sight on the horizon, the vegetarian oasis boasted a menu of 7 or so ALLVEG choices: the black bean toastie, the vegan toastie, the seitan wrap, the indian curry bowl, the thai curry bowl, the potato burrito… and something else i’m clearly forgetting… or not(i mean, hello, it was a festival!!!) all food was cooked fresh to order, with the wait time never feeling excessive. i was tempted to order from only here all weekend, tho there were other awesome stands worthy of checking out, and check them out i did. however, i got most of my eats here, and each one was tastier than the next… the black bean toastie blended a mix of black beans & corn, brown rice, salsa, cheese, spinach and garlic in a pressed tortilla, the seitan wrap featured warm chunks of soy protein, lettuce, tomatoes and tahini sauce and the thai curry bowl was a pile of kale, baby corn, cauliflower, broccoli and other veggies in a rich coconut milk curry sauce over top a bed of brown rice. even my meat-eating friends were fawning over these fresh made delights and ordered some for themselves after sampling bites of mine! prices were typical for festie food: $ 6-$ 8/each and while seemingly high, i think it was a good value considering the quality of the ingredients and hefty size of the portions. as it is a traveling tent, i can only hope that this oasis reappears on my musical adventures.
