Goober’s has close, but please read on for exciting news. Goober’s has been our go to spot in Mt. Airy for about 10 years. We went there for lunch today and found that Goober’s has become Ray’s — yes, that right, the reincarnation of Ray’s Kingburger!!! The menu at Ray’s seems to be a beautiful combination of Ray’s Kingburger menu and Goober’s menu. The three of us had a shrimp basket, an oyster basket and a thin burger w lettuce, tomato, onion, amazing buttermilk fried bacon and sauce(sorry don’t remember exactly what the sauce was). The shrimp and oyster and accompanyon cocktail sauce and tarter sauce with great. The burger looked and tasted fantastic. The menu has many options including a dazzling array of build your own burger options. Bye Goober’s we will miss you and welcome back Ray’s!!!

Update– we have visited this restaurant multiple times and its always been great until today… And i have to say what in the world happened. The steak was horrible 3 of us ordered the ribeye and all of them were not cooked right and no seasoning… Waitress said«im so sorry we have a new cook» please get the old one back or we are done with this place… And the worst part is i didn’t even eat the«fixed» steak I guess he only knew how to cook well done and all they offered was a desert so so disappointed we always talked highly to everyone about the food but if they keep cooking like this its downhill especially when they don’t act like they care…

Stopped in during a wkend visit to a B&B. Started with the fried pickles, which were too thin, and way too greasy. Had the chipotle chicken grinder, which was very good. Wife had the Jamaican chicken, which was also good. Overall, not a bad place.

All the reviews on Unilocal sound great, but I wasn’t too impressed. It was just ok. It doesn’t seem to have anything to do with the Andy Griffith show like the name suggests. My table ordered the brisket, lasagna, and a side baked potato with a side of roasted veggies. Everything tasted fine, but nothing too great.

My family and friends have been going to Goober’s for years, and I can honestly say that I’ve never been disappointed in the food there. We love to share their appetizers. The cheese fries and fried pickles are two of our favorites. The cheese fries come topped with homemade ranch dressing, tons of cheddar cheese, and real bacon bits.(So they’re totally calorie free – huge plus. Ha!) The fried pickle chips are nicely and not overly breaded, and not at all greasy. The dipping sauce is tasty, but the pickle chips are perfect on their own. As far as main dishes go, they have amazing steaks, burgers, sandwiches, pasta, and salads. My personal favorite is their blackened chicken salad. They marinade their Roma tomatoes in a very unique way, and they really do make the salad even better. All of their salad dressings taste homemade, and their Italian house and mango vinaigrette are different and very delicious. The portions are ridiculously and insanely large, so get a «to-go» box… because if you have a sweet tooth, you’re going to want to try their dessert. They have a peanut butter pie and chocolate«spoon» cake that is out of this world fabulous. I’m serious. Splurge and go for the pie if you love Reece’s cups. Or splurge if you love moist and wickedly sinful chocolate cake. It’s definitely worth the extra five bucks and gazillion calories. And you can always share.(But you won’t want to – trust me!) The atmosphere has changed some through the years – it used to be extremely loud and actually almost overstimulating with all of the wall hangings and eccentricities. But they’ve done some remodeling and it’s more low-key and quiet now. Kids are welcome and they have a good selection for the picky little people in your bunch. If you’ve never been to Goober’s, stop in and give it a try. I don’t think you’ll be disappointed!

Our waitress was a little out of it this day and she didn’t seem that busy. The food was good.

We arrived at Goober’s about 3:00 pm on a Saturday afternoon. It was our first visit to this location(we had visited the now closed Goober’s in Winston Salem a few times) and we weren’t sure if we should seat ourselves or wait to be seated, so we walked thru the dining side and bar side. There were plenty of empty tables and booths but none were clean, so we walked back by the entrance. A girl at the register said she would seat us in a minute; she seemed preoccupied and not very welcoming, but, hey, we all have bad days. We were finally seated, and our drink orders taken. My husband ordered the chipotle chicken grinder and the gator bites, I got the grilled chicken breast sandwich with a side of fries. The gator bites arrived about five minutes after we ordered them, hot and tasty, although a couple bites were tough and had a game-y flavor. We got about ten bites in our order, each about the size of a nickel, so it didn’t spoil our appetite. Then… THEWAITBEGAN. Hubby got a drink refill delivered. Our wait person came to ask if she could take the appetizer plate and if we needed anything else. I guess we should have said«yes, our sandwiches, please.» Several other tables were seated, served and left while we waited. I got a drink refill and we were told it shouldn’t be much longer. The sandwiches arrived a few minutes after that, and we were THEN told the fries would be right out. I estimate we waited 45 minutes for our lunch to arrive, from the time we ordered it, for relatively simple, on-the-menu items. No explanation was given for the delay. Hubby’s grinder was okay, not very flavorful. The chicken in my grilled chicken sandwich looked and tasted poached; again, bland. Luckily there is a shelf filled with assorted sauces for customers to use, so hubby got some Red Hot Smoked chipotle sauce; it helped both sandwiches AND the ketchup for the fries, which were nothing special. My husband counted 14 waitstaff milling around mid afternoon and commented that maybe they should train some of them to work in the kitchen. No one was overly friendly. We heard another waitress tell her table, when asked, that she NEVER eats anything at Goober’s! Wow! That is quite an endorsement! Hubby also joked that maybe«locals» get served first at Goober’s and that we, as midwesterners, had to wait, although we have lived in NC for 15 yrs… Whatever the reason, next time we are in Mt Airy and need a meal, we will give 13 Bones a try. Goober’s is off the list.

Food’s awful. Loud, noisy, annoying atmosphere. I’ve been forced to eat here several times, every time it was a horrible experience.

We were in town for one night and our friends said this was the best place to eat in Mt Airy. Décor is definitely on the eclectic side, but fun. I had the Greek salad which was very fresh and had great flavor. My husband had the lasagna and it was good(a little more meat wouldn’t have hurt — but still good). The rest of the table had burgers and sandwiches and they were huge! By all reports, they were excellent. We also sampled the fried pickles, peanut butter pie and chocolate spoon cake — all must have options! Very good food and definitely worth another visit next time we are in town.

Amazing rack of ribs! Two of us shared half the rack and took the second half home. Super meaty and very reasonably priced. Interesting atmosphere.

Service was super friendly and fast! LOVED the fried pickles! The best ever! When I noticed they had a fried green tomato BLT, I asked if I could get a side of the FGT with my steak and they obliged. The tomatoes were just OK, a little greasy and kind of mushy inside unfortunately. My steak however, was delicious and cooked perfectly. If I was in the area again, I would definitely return for the pickles and the steak.

My favorite restaurant! I have eaten at Goober’s since the beginning. It’s not the same as it used to be, but it’s still good. I love the Cuban Sandwich. Get the Cuban Sandwich. If you’re in Mt. Airy, eat at Goobers.

If you’re looking for a variety of good food in one restaurant in Mount Airy, this is your best bet. Skip all those chain restaurants and eat at a locally owned place! I lived in «Mayberry» for almost four years, and ate here countless times. Never once had anything less than delicious on the menu! Seriously, order anything that sounds good to you. My favorites include the fried pickles, gator bites, blackened chicken salad, crab-topped mahi, lasagna, and burgers. The crispy o’s are a great side, the tomatoes on the salads are out of this world, and the peanut butter pie is NOT to be missed! Atmosphere is fun and family friendly, if not a bit loud. Don’t be surprised if there’s a wait right around Noon for lunch or 6−8pm for dinner. Service has waxed and waned but is generally pretty good. The bar service is good also, with a decent selection of drafts.

As cheesy as it is this may be the best place to eat in Mt. Airy. If you can get past the junk that decorates the walls you will find tasty food at decent prices. I always get the lobster sandwich. Great cheesy seafood holiness. Burgers are thick and cooked to order. Service is always good. Just too much crap on the walls. Makes me nervous.

Keeping with the Andy Griffith Show theme, the old Ray’s Restaurant was turned into Goobers. And didn’t Goober from the show work on cars? Well, yeah but maybe Goober actually wanted to be a restaurateur! The strange part comes in when you find out Goobers has a Caribbean flavor! Outdoor tiki huts and a hippie VW bus parked out front marks this as a non-traditional spot in Mt. Airy.
