My coworker/friend and I decided to take an early morning ride on the Military Ridge Trail from Verona to Mount Horeb, with the hope of having breakfast at Schubert’s Diner. We should’ve checked Unilocal before leaving, because as Rowan C notes, Schubert’s is definitely closed pending new ownership. We rode around Mount Horeb, searching for a breakfast place before stumbling across the Troll Inn. It advertised a full breakfast menu, so we dismounted our bikes and walked-in. It’s a classic Wisconsin tavern; big bar, dark wood, some exposed brick, and a flat screen TV. There were 4 – 5 people sitting at the bar, obviously nursing hangovers while choking down some bloody marys. A lone woman was working the bar and grille; it took a few minutes for her to hand us menus and offer drinks(waters, please). The breakfast menu is simple and classic, but is sure to offer something for everyone. We both chose the eggs, hashbrowns, and toast for $ 6. We added a side of bacon(4 slices) for an extra $ 2. She offered onions and cheese on the hashbrowns for no extra charge; how could we not take advantage of that? The friendly woman went back to the grille and started cooking. Before long, a huge plate of comfort breakfast food arrived. My scrambled eggs were perfect — no signs of crust/browning. The hashbrowns, burried beneath cheese and onions, were crispy and delicious. The whole wheat toast was excellent, and the bacon had a perfect mix of crispy-to-chewiness. Yum. With bacon and soda, my tab came to $ 10 — more than fair, in my book. The place won’t win any culinary awards, but if it’s simple, straight-forward, cures-what-ails-you breakfast food that you’re seeking, look no further.
