I know the Director of this library personally, and as a librarian myself — I have to address the other commenters, though I know the comments pre-date her tenure at this particular location. As libraries and librarians attempt to stay relevant in a quickly-paced 21st century world, we’ve abandoned the idea of maintaining the entire physical library as quiet space. Most libraries, if you ask, will have space reserved for quiet study or work. Because we serve a variety of needs, its not feasible to be whispering to customers all the time. Additionally, the library is meant to be a space for all — and in order to encourage people to use the library, professional librarians have really tried to back away from the stereotypical glasses-wearing, tight bun-clad librarian staring down her nose at customers, holding her finger to her lips and loudly telling people to «SHHH! «whenever a noise is made. It’s pretty standard that you won’t find that at any public library these days. If you do contribute as a taxpayer in this area and you are unhappy with the operating hours of the library, perhaps addressing that with the town, or the governing entity of the library would be your best bet. Many libraries have had to cut back or restrict hours due to funding issues. Chances are the library is not open as much as they’d like to be, due to a limited amount of operating expense. You’d be helping the library administration a lot by registering your concerns with your local governmental entity. Mt. Kisco Public Library is an excellent facility run by seasoned professionals. It deserves any support and assistance anyone would like to give!

If you work a full time job and contribute to the taxes that help fund things like libraries, you will rarely be able to patronize this library because it doesn’t open until 11am on weekdays and the latest it is open(2 nights out of the week) is 7pm. It’s closed on Sundays and open half time on Saturdays. It’s a nice library physically and it’s very enjoyable to visit whenever the librarian Gail is working, but the problem is that it is hardly open outside of working hours!!! They run some interesting public programs and classes but, again, at ridiculous hours like 2pm on weekdays. Maybe most of the people in Mt. Kisco don’t work? I just don’t understand what the point of a library is when the working townsfolk can’t visit it. If they’re worried about working long hours then perhaps they should do a few weekdays when they open at 1pm and close at 9pm.

I came here to the library to do some photo editing. I chose to come here rather than going to Starbucks since I would have had some expectation of relative quietude being that it is a library. How sadly mistaken I was. And the offender? The Librarian! First it was assisting a Spanish speaking gentleman with a phone call for non-library related business and now it is searching for a book on women’s gymnastics to some cagey looking guy. At a voice well above a whisper. I could understand a now and again breach of etiquette but this has been on going for 30 minutes plus with nary a break. So I go downstairs and register a complaint in the nicest way possible and am invited to sit there instead. No different. Grrr. This is a gorgeous library and very comfortable otherwise but no more for me today. What a shame. :(((!!!
