Barb’s Diner

Barbs ruined me, I moved to Columbus and have since been looking for «that place just like barbs» but it doesn’t exist. Theresa is fantastic, if you see her give her a big hug from me. Food and fantastic and the service is great. If you are a regular they remember your name, order and give you free coffee (no promises about the coffee)

Barb’s Diner is my favorite breakfast place in Mt. Vernon. It all starts with the bacon. I consider it required for any breakfast visit. It is REAL bacon, not rubbery, flimsy or small. This is big, thick, crispy, flat bacon and it is l obviously high quality. I believe they get all of their meat from the local Smithhisler’s Meats, as I’ve seen the delivery truck there frequently, and the quality of the meat matches the Smithhisler’s highly esteemed reputation.
This is the «Cheers» of breakfast in Mt. Vernon. Their core regulars include local farmers, truck drivers, educators and a few local business owners. The staff are friendly, quick to help, never let your coffee cool down and are eager to learn your name. I’ve been going to Barbs regularly for seven years, through four long-​term waitresses, and they’ve always been good and become a friend.
The restaurant is a small block building with a one room open dining room. There is more seating than it looks like on the outside and can accommodate large or small groups easily. There are men’s and women’s restrooms and there is an open window where you can see into the kitchen.
I believe coffee is included with any breakfast meal and there are a lot of options that I rotate through including;
Pancakes (plain, blueberry or pecan) and bacon,
Two eggs/​bacon/​toast (can add hash browns too)
Oatmeal & Bacon
French Toast & Bacon
Basically, whatever I order I add bacon to it, because I can’t overstate how great this bacon is.
The only knock on Barbs is the ambiance, but you don’t go there for contemporary design, you go there for great breakfast food. If you are in Mount Vernon for breakfast, you have found the place to go.

I wasn’t that impressed. I ordered som sort of bowl for breakfast, with hash browns, scrambled eggs, sausage gravy and a sausage patty. Except they forgot to put the sausage patty in, so it was just a bowl of bland mushiness. Our waitress never came back to check on us so I ate the mush. When we paid at the counter and I told them of their mistake, they gave me $ 1 off my meal. Don’t believe the hype, it’s just ok.

Barb’s is a great place to have breakfast, very friendly atmosphere, great service. I love the Haystack, but be ready to be very full if you eat it all.

This little mom and pop place is a kept secret that needs exposed. The breakfast here is bar none the best in town. Bob evans can not compare. The service is great and the prices are more than fair. Good quality and quantity. If your passing through town don’t hesitate to stop here and enjoy a real home cooked meal
