So, I’m a nut when it comes to gyros and I’m extremely picky… You can imagine my excitement to find a gyro shop in Mt. Vernon, IL. I was not disappointed. The sandwiches are made fresh to order and the helpings are more than sufficient for the heartiest of appetites. They make a gyro stew that is wonderful and a baklava that is dangerous. I’m supposed to be taking a piece home for my wife but it’s a long trip… The best part is the atmosphere… it’s not fancy, but it feels warm and friendly. I observe an owner/​chef behind the counter happily prepping food with his family helping take orders and manage the tables. The several times I’ve visited here, they’re always smiling and laughing with each other and the guests. It’s well worth the stop and not very far off the interstate if you’re passing through and don’t want to eat bland chain food. Have your appetite and stories about travel ready… also, bring cash, no credit cards here– «no machine to process them.»

Great Place! Local place with a friendly environment. The owner talked to us about our travels and his life growing up in Greece! Very authentic and delicious!

At Jimmie James, they keep it simple and do it well. Gyros, fries and Greek salads are solid. We went a little too late for the balaclava. Definitely worth the trip away from the highway. Owners are very friendly, and waited until we were done with our meal before engaging us in conversation. Go ahead, and support local!

Do yourself a favor, and get off the interstate for this no frills, all genuine gyro served by a man who knows what he’s doing. Super cheap, big enough to fill you up for the next 500 miles. And if you sit close enough to the «kitchen,» your dinner will come with a conversation by the man himself. Keep it up guys, I’ll be back through soon!

Yummy! Simplistic! Menu (literally): Gyro, Greek salad, gyro stew (w/​cornbread), fries, and baklava! We ordered one of each. Perfect for 2… everything was authentic and tasty and the staff was wonderful… highly recommend!

Nice little find in this «food desert» part of the country. Great lunch spot. Really basic… Gyro sandwiches and not much else. But the gyros are great and the ownership/​staff very friendly. (TIP: Get the Baklava for dessert.) Clean, wallet-​friendly and accessible. Opt for the local establishments over the chains. This place is solid.

Probably (without much research) one of the best places in Mt. Vernon. Simple. Owner is greek. Knows how to make a couple things very well. The carpet and wall paneling from the eighties add a nice vintage feel. Basically a food truck but with indoor seating. Had the sandwich. Solid.

True dive with 70’s paneling and carpeting and excellent gyros. Normally I like my gyros with a thinner pita and thinner shavings of meat with crispy bit edges. Here everything is cut a little thicker with a fluffier pita, but it is all so fresh (gyros are nearly all that they do) that is an excellent gyro with just the right amount of tzatziki.

My bf loooooves this place and recommends it to everyone he knows! Excellent prices, awesome gyros and great staff!

Great food and friendly service! Meat was excellent. If you want to get off the beaten path while traveling, this is the place. It is a small menu and not marked well as others have commented. We will go back.

Just ate there today. The menu is very small with Gyro sandwitch, gyro stew, and a salad. It was great! I ate the gyro sandwitch with some baklava for dessert. I highly recommend this restaurant. It’s a small place with polite service. Love it!
