Best prime rib tasted by far! Comes sizzling on a hot platter!

Went here for breakfast on my last day. I found the breakfast to be mediocre at best and the service was reeeeeally slow. WHich would be fine, except there weren’t many other in there.(Although I notice a table that sat way after us got served way before.) I feel like I might have liked this place for lunch or dinner if I had chosen more local cuisine. But I chose french toast and bacon and it was good, just not great in any way. It’s my fault though… we drove past this place all week and I *HAD* to eat here. :sigh:

Koa Shop Kaffee 17 – 4003 Ahuahu Place Mountain View, HI If you ever find yourself on Hawaii’s Big Island(the Island of Hawaii), be sure to stop at Koa Shop Kaffee, easily found halfway between Hilo and Volcano National Park on highway 11(between mile marker 11&12). There MaryLou de Luz runs a neat little restaurant next to husband Dan’s Koa workshop and store. MaryLou creates a masterful hearty Portuguese Bean Soup full of meat, beans sausage and potatoes. A large bowl is easily enough for a meal($ 7.95) but you should hope that she is baking so you can top off your meal with some heavenly chocolate banana cake or fresh pumpkin pie. Other great menu items include fried chicken($ 8.95), roast pork & gravy($ 8.95) and deep fried Pollack($ 10.95). Of course they have sandwiches(hamburger, turkey etc) for $ 5 — $ 6. As you can see, this meal will not break your wallet. In back, Dan de Luz’s Koa Shop is crammed with the most beautiful Koa wood items from bowls to lustrous boxes to sweet sounding ukuleles. Dan’s workshop stands between the restaurant and the shop and if you’re lucky you will see him crafting a new Koa item. This is a great and delicious stop on your way to or from the Volcano or if you are just spending some time in Hilo.

I really wanted to like this place. It was in my tour book that this was owned by a husband and wife. He did wood carving in the backyard and she cooked in the diner. There were even two little fat dogs that ran up to us to be pet when we arrived, which always makes me happy. The place is really clean and crazy cheap($ 12 for two breakfasts and coffee) but the food is just lame. I can’t think of another way to explain it. It didn’t make me sick or anything, but my french toast was just egged wonder bread. Even the coffee was weak. Plus, we were the only people in the place at 8 am. The wood shop out back was pretty neat though.
