He is out to make money! Stay away from him. I went to him for shoulder pain after a volleyball injury and he ordered an MRI after taking a look at my xray. He wants me to go to a specific Imaging place all the way in Los Gatos and wants only a 3T MRI. Takes a look at my MRI and says there is no other option than for him to go in there and fix my torn labrum else I am going to have increasing pain and with aging my labrum will tear further potentially leading to loss of motor skills. Total c**p. I went in for a second opinion with another reputed orthopedic surgeon and she took a look at my MRI and asked me to do a few arm movements and diagnosed that what I had was an inflamation of the Rotator cuff in medical terms rotator cuff tendinitis, due to which I had a sharp pain while lifting my arm over my head. The tear of the labrum is very subtle and is not the reason for my discomfort nor does it require surgery whatsoever. She recommended some physical therapy and unlike this crook (Stephen Osborne) told me I had to go to physical therapy only if I wanted to since my shoulder was healing by itself and that I will be back to full functionality in less than a month. She further told me that a SLAP tear (which is what I have) is something that NFL players live with and play professional footbal after, without having had any surgery. Dr. Osborne on the other hand did not mention the rotator cuff and wanted me to book a date for surgery with him asap and went over the entire post op healing process afterwards which according to his opinion would be a 10 month process instead of 4 months as recommended by medical experts. Of course you cannot make enough money in 4 months as you can in 10 months.
Oh did I forget to mention his assistant is the slowest, laziest and the most inefficient person I have ever met. She wants me to call and leave my address on the answering machine since she is too tired to take it down herself and has had a long day. Besides they don’t accept credit card and need me to pay in cash but I have to wait for a bill to arrive to my home address which she doesn’t have the energy to note down. Total waste of time and money this bunch are.

Dr Osborn has been a partner in health for me for over 25 years and I recommend him without reservation.
I first went to Dr Osborn due to knee pain. After a just a few minutes in his exam room he quickly determined that a bone spur in my ankle causing impingement and an awkward gait resulting in the knee pain. The spur was removed and I was restored to full range of motion and back up and out running in just a few weeks.
Due to many years of football, rugby, and marathoning my knees caps have been in need of attention over the years. Dr. Osborn has treated me with stretching, strengthening exercises, and rest, as well as, eventually, two knee surgeries. Both surgeries got me back out and active without complication.
I note that one of the other reviewers complained that Dr. Osborne performed surgery only after several office visits and attempts to treat w/​non-​surgical therapies. Frankly, that’s just the kind of doctor I want… save the surgery for only when necessary.
Dr. Osborne also treated me for a large bone spur on my collarbone. After other doctors here in Oregon, where I’ve moved, missed it, he ordered a special angle x-​ray and spotted the issue. The surgery went well and my shoulder was restored to full range of motion and zero pain.
I can’t recommend Dr. Osborn enough. He’s thorough, listens well, and takes his time. I’m now 59 and remain very active and I attribute much of that to his great abilities as a physician.
No question, one of the best docs I’ve ever had.

I went to visit Dr. Osborn after a recommendation from a close friend who is a PT. My friend’s opinion was that Dr. Osborn was very thorough. After my first couple visits to determine the cause of pain in both of my knees, I seemed to agree. After some physical therapy, a couple follow-​up visits, xrays, a follow-​up visit, an MRI on the left, a follow-​up visit, an MRI on the right, and my last office visit, I can only conclude one thing. Dr. Osborn must be out for the money he gets for office visits. And the money for surgery if you fail to get a second opinion. He diagnosed that my pain was due to patellar malalignment and a chondral defect in my femur. He suggested a surgery that would put me on crutches for 12 weeks, and he stuck by that suggestion after I reminded him that I have a toddler at home.
While the MRI did show a chondral defect, I sought a second opinion at SOAR. Dr. Wall (without any hints given on what the previous diagnosis was) pointed out the defect and said it was an incidental finding and is not at all related to my pain, nor would it be a problem. Dr. Wall suggested I continue PT, but focus on quad strengthening and less on the flexibility that Dr. Osborn preached. Both my PT and Dr. Wall commented that I was flexible enough, and potentially too flexible in some areas exacerbating my malalignment. I waited at the SOAR front desk after my second opinion visit to schedule a follow-​up visit and to my surprise, Dr. Wall said «I’m here if you need me, no need to come back unless you need to». Wow! No more endless doctor appointments. And I have now graduated from PT with my knee pain only arising occasionally rather than every day.
I am happy with my end result, but no thanks to Dr. Osborn who caused me unnecessary stress and time off work to go back for endless follow-​up appointments. I am so glad I got a second opinion. And my friend, the PT, also agrees and will not recommend Dr. Osborn to anyone in the future.
On a side note, I found Dr. Osborn to be sexist, and exams were at times uncomfortable and rude.
All around, don’t bother with Dr. Osborn… And always get a second opinion.

I was in a very serious biking accident in May 2013 — broke and dislocated my collar bone, fractured six ribs, tore some ligaments, etc. Dr. Osborn, who was referred by my family doctor, performed my shoulder reconstruction surgery and helped me through the recovery process. Many doctors follow their 10 – 15 minute per patient schedule, but Dr. Osborn is never in a rush. For example, he spent a lot of time during my first visit to request and read the accident/​medical report from ER, spent over an hour going over the preoperative and postoperative instructions with me, patiently explained to me my conditions, expectations from surgery, and how to make the best recovery.

Patients who have a surgery after injuries deal with a LOT of pain, frustrations, and perhaps anger. But a human body doesn’t work like a car, where you can just replace one part, and we should not expect a quick fix by any surgeon. Dr. Osborn emphasizes that physical therapy and the age/​condition of our own body is as equally important as his surgery in the recovery process. In my case, I had to take three months off work and did 13 months of PT. So, a huge part of my recovery depended on PT, as well as daily strengthening and stretching exercises at home. However, he did not just hand me over to my physical therapist, but followed up with me and monitored my recovery often (I don’t want a doctor who says see you in six months or a year while I am still recovering). He even spoke to the owner/​manager of my physical therapy clinic when I was making slow progress from the treatment. I am very thankful for having Dr. Osborn during the recovery process. He has done his BEST as a surgeon and educator on how to maintain my post-​surgery physical health. He is a perfectionist who is genuine and caring, and I would highly recommend him.

With so many great orthopedics in the area, patients should not settle for less than the best. Sadly, Dr. Osborn is not among the top tier. Do note, many of the reviewers below decided not to get second opinions before proceeding with their surgeries. Poor decision. Though, even I, spent far too long with him before consulting alternatives.
I had come to treat my knee that had increasingly been in pain (especially with the amount of running I had been doing). I described all of my symptoms and Dr. Osborn required a number of tests before making any conclusions. First an x-​ray, then an MRI, and another MRI for the other knee to compare — all of which needed visits in between (he said he couldn’t do it all at once). Throughout each visit he would strangely dictate notes inside a recorder. Very slowly I felt he was putting me on a lifetime subscription plan of visits. His motives felt a little slimy. He only was able to diagnose things one-​at-​a-​time causing me to really rack up the number.
Finally he diagnosed me as having a ‘breakdown of articular cartilage’ and that I should ice four times a day (and every four weeks I’d return and he’d say the same thing). While the icing helped, it did not cure my issue. Finally, I described my symptoms to a friend who’s a PT and she immediately diagnosed me having patellofemoral pain syndrome. No tests needed, no MRI’s, no xrays, just pure intuition — and she got it right! I have the most typical case of runners knee. As an orthopedic, Dr. Osborn wasn’t able to identify the most common case of athletic knee pain!?#$%

All I needed was a prescription to do physical therapy. This doctor made me come to him for three appointments. He made me do an xray. And then a MRI. He then charged me $ 1000. Did not give me a prescription. And would not accept my credit card. Stay away. This guy is a crook.

My experience with Dr. Osborn for my elbow surgery has been terrible, as I had pain and absolutely no improvement after the surgery, He does not even deserve a one-​star but that is the minimum possible. I would not recommend him to anyone for orthopedic surgery.
He had an MRI and XRAY taken, and diagnosed my elbow pain as a tennis elbow. I had the main operation and many physical therapy sessions. On my first visit after the operation, I had to get of bed and have my wife drive me to his office, but he did not even open the bandages to take a look.
He said the chance of success for the operation was 90%. He failed that. He mentioned that he will next treat it by making a hole to empty the sack, but then he instead injected a type of cortisone for eliminating the inflammation. The reason was that the file was out for dictation he did not remember, he said, the details of many patients. If the file is out, and he did not have a chance to review his findings from last visit, why did he go ahead with the treatment?
He said the chance of this second treatment was 10%. He failed that too. So, his failure rate was 90% plus 10%, or 100% for my case.
After no improvement whatsoever, I went to another doctor and had another operation. As it turns out, I had a tumor and that was the cause of pain. Now, I am fine after many years of pain, unnecessary procedures, physical therapy sessions after the misdiagnosed operation, and insurance co-​pay payments because of his erroneous diagnosis despite all the MRI, X-​ray, etc., that was also paid by my and the insurance! Such a doctor also increases the cost of medical expenses to both insurance companies and patients in addition to pain and suffering.
During my visit to him he was also making a campaign asking for a good review, as he said a patient who could not afford his fees wrote a bad review.

Stay away from this doctor.
I had a couple of consultations with him regarding carpal tunnel syndrome.
Without hesitation he immediately suggested surgery, not considering any other treatments before. Also, of the 2 types of surgery, he insisted that I took the more invasive method, instead of the new endoscopic method… because that is the only one he does.
On top of that, when I had a follow up appointment and I had to reschedule due to a work emergency, he charged me a $ 150 dollars no-​show fee, even though I called ahead of time and rescheduled it. When I called they said that is one of the fine print items in the form you sign on your visit, that if you reschedule an appointment they have the right to charge you this huge fee!
Seems like this is a guy who will do anything to get money out of you, without any morals.
Stay Away!

When I lived in another state, I had an ACL replacement (by another doctor), which unfortunately resulted with a major quad muscle (VMO) no longer responding. It wouldn’t flex at all. After about two years of PT, and after moving to CA, I visited Dr Osborn and he fixed it.
He started with identifying the root cause, and I was quite impressed with his ability to locate the problem. He then verified his diagnosis with detailed tests.
He was not quick to rush to surgery. At his recommendation, I tried additional physical therapy to see if it would help. After exhausting other options, he performed the surgery and it corrected the problem. The VMO now fires, and tests from physical therapy and other medical professionals indicate it is just as strong as my other (dominate/​right) leg.
It has now been several years since the surgery. In short, having functional limbs significantly improves quality of life. I love the outdoors, and am able to do so much more now thanks to Dr Osborn’s insight, attention to detail, and determination to help solve the problem.

I have been a patient with Dr. Osborn for (recurring) back pains and a knee injury from kiteboarding (incl. surgery). Unlike most other doctors, Dr. Osborn is meticulous, highly detail-​oriented and above all, listens to you. He is genuinely concerned about your entire physical and mental health, not just the ache or pain you made the appointment for. His staff is very professional, too! Highly recommend.

Update… I am back to 100% thanks to Dr. Osborne. He took his time with me, answered all my questions and fixed my shoulder that I smashed into the consistency of applesauce. In all my visits, I rarely waited more than 10 minutes to see him. I wish more doctors were as diligent.

After reading reviews on Unilocal and other places, I visited Dr. Osborne for my knee treatement. But it ended out to be a wrong choice. I had to change to a different one for my treatment for the same. His office staff had created a mess out of my case. I had a insurance change and initially they told me that they would accept Cigna and collect copayments and now they had billed me letting me know that Cigna is no more accepted. Neither does Doctor nor the staff want to discuss about this. This I see more of an unprofessional act. I hope I would have gone with Dr. Folger for the same. Also my previous Unilocal comment also seemed to have been remoed, do not know why… Any clues.

Dr. Osborn cured my back without surgery which was awesome. His powers of observations are amazing since he was able to spot the source of my lower-​back problems to my Spine’s shape without even seeing an X-​Ray.
I strongly recommend Dr. Osborn to anyone with sports injuries.

I came to Dr Osborn with an elbow injury. He did a careful examination, but then ordered xray and mri. After the results came back indicating a ligament tear, he told me I needed surgery to repair the tear and scheduled me to have this done. I decided to seek a second opinion from another highly esteemed orthopedic surgeon. The latter thought that I was already gaining stability in the joint and that it would make better sense to let it heal on its own and do surgery only in the unlikely case that the tear does not heal. Two and a half months after my accident, I returned for an exam and the doctor told me that my joint is again stable and I can do mild exercises with weights, with return to full activity in the summer.
I am very grateful that I went for a second opinion and didn’t rush into surgery which Dr Osborn recommended.

Dr. Osborn combines an old-​fashioned work ethic with cutting edge information and technology. Where else can you find someone who will spend 40 minutes educating you about your injury and how to care for it? Of our family of five, 4 of us have needed Dr. Osborn’s expertise. With an outstanding manner and complete professional care, we are so lucky to have someone like him in our area doing this important work.

I’ve been a patient of Dr. Osborne for many years. I am not typical in that I have a severe neuromuscular disorder. About 10 years ago I fell out of my wheelchair and broke both legs. Dr. Osborne realized that I had extenuates circumstances, and talked to his colleagues before making a decision to operate. Needless to say, Dr. Osborne went the extra distance to seek out advice for me. Words can’t explain how much this extra research meant to me.
In my opinion, you can’t do better. I have never felt rushed. He takes the time to explain everything. I am so glad that I have found him.

dr. Osborn not only explained to me my problem and referred me to an excellent physical therapist, but he also gave me advice on what to do in order to stay healthy and prevent injuries in the future.

Dr. Osborn took care of my wife’s busted knee this summer. He took a refreshingly different approach than any other Dr we visited. He took his time and was very careful to evaluate everything related to the knee problem. He checked out her knee, but he also looked at her overall balance, how she walked, and her muscle strength and flexibility. He helped her out with other related skeletal and muscular issues that were related to her knee problem. And he never shuffled her out of the office in a rush. We found him to be very thorough, and we think he gave us fantastic advice about taking care of the knee and preventing further injury. Within a short period of time, my wife’s knee recovered.
He’s a caring guy, very personable and funny, and he takes his practice very seriously. I highly recommend him for anyone who needs his orthopedic services.

For the last 2 years or so, I have been having knee cartilage problems. Dr. Osbourne very kindly pushed therapy as much as he could and was very patient in trying to get me to understand the pressure muscles can put on your knees. I think I just overplayed soccer and I had done some damage to my cartilage but it was exacerbated by how tight my muscles were. Its been a long haul but I have been able play again and I am very grateful that surgery was not seriously considered!

This guy is a total quack! Long story-​short. I went to see him when I learned I had plantar fasciitis (foot injury) from training for a ½ marathon. It was in the beginning stages so I was not too worried but wanted to «nip it in the bud» as soon as possible. Dr. Osborn TOLD me (not recommended) I had to stop working out immediately. The ONLY exercise I could do was swimming. That was not an option with my schedule. Needless to say, I did many web searches and got a second and a third opinion. I learned to stretch, proper shoe fitting and ice did wonders. I just finished my first ½ marathon with no problem. He has a «god» complex and went on a Obama tangent about the tax reform when clearly cared less about his political view.
If you see him, get a second opinion-​my advise for the day!
