The Golf Club At Moffett Field

This 5-​star rating is solely for their putting green. Great putting surface, pristinely cut, not too fast, not too slow, I’m beginning to think I got lucky because this green was just in perfect condition. Enough slope to work on your line/​speed. I stopped by right after work on a Friday afternoon to work on my putting, and this will definitely be a weekly routine from now on… I used to shoot in the low 80s consistently teeing from the back. I’ve played in courses all over Arizona, California, Oregon, Washington. So I’d say I’ve seen a lot of courses over the past decade or so. This putting green was 5 out of 5 when I went.

A pretty challenging course for someone who’s only been to a handful of 18 hole courses that for 3 of us, it took 5 hours! It almost felt like a secret gem that not many people know about as it’s tucked in the back of Moffett Field right across the parking lot where they keep all the Google commuter shuttle buses. The course was well maintained, but strangely laid out as we were driving all over the place to find some of the holes.
Getting here took longer than expected as Google Maps made us go to an entrance that wasn’t open so make sure to get in from Ellis Street and go through security. They just check your driver’s license.
Course rate is $ 49, but if you’re a Google employee, it’s only $ 27! Cart rental is $ 30. Nice that you can take the cart to your car to load up afterwards as some places frown upon that.

Great course! It’s pretty open and not a lot of hazards. Not a ton of hills or blind shots so it makes it easier to find your ball. Really like the fact they give military personnel a discount even though I’m not military. They have a café inside where you can pick up some munchies. No bathrooms along the course so make sure you don’t miss the opportunity when you first check in or when you get to the 10^th hole. People were nice in the pro shop. KIND OF EXPENSIVE!!! $ 65 per person but I will definitely be back for another round.

Nice layout. GREAT greens for being public. Hard back nine. Nice pro shop guys. My gripe is this place just destroyed my new clubs. There is no cart path so the terrain is AWFUL. Also, needs a club course map or yardage sticks or something. Main issue was the idiot who took me to my car after cart died. We walk back to get another cart. Took 10 – 12 min sitting in a new cart while u know, he ate his lunch!!! I was like hey! He’s like one min please. Then come in the cart and throws away my 2 BRAND NEW WATERS in my cup holder while I’m not paying attention. Doesn’t get me new ones and says sorry I’m sorry (all he kept saying) lol. Ahhhh. Potentially a great course.

After an El Niño winter I was interested to see what condition the course was in. And pleasantly surprised. The course is in great shape I’m not sure how long ago they punched the greens but they putted really well, fast actually. Not many wet spots at all. And a really fast round although we may have been slightly behind pace because there was no one in front of us and the group behind us didn’t catch up until #13. They also upgraded the 19^th hole and added a frequent player club. I fear that this review will bring more people to the course but credit where credit is due. Gary and the new team really deserve kudos.

My experience on the course was nice because I like tall old trees lining the fairways, very picturesque. However, the 2 stars is for my interaction with at the pro shop was one I haven’t experienced in 10 years of golfing. First, I said 2 of us wanted to rent a cart, but I had to ask our other player if he wanted to rent a cart. He ignored me and charged my credit card for his cart. Second, we arrived 30 minutes early and wanted to hit a bucket of balls. The guy at the cashier said something like «we didn’t have time because we’re sending out to the tee now.» So I said let another 4some go ahead of us, and he says «there’s no one else teeing off,» so I said we’re going to hit some balls and we’ll be back in 30 minutes, which was our designated tee time. He might have grudgingly said OK.
When I returned to the pro shop, an older gentleman who looked like the head pro was there and I told him we were ready to tee off, and he was more cordial in asking me to be next in line at the tee. I was very willing to do so.
Also, most of the greens were aerated. No discount.

This was my first time golfing and I had a great experience up until the 18^th Hole. As we were teeing off an employee approached us and demanded we return our golf carts, he was very impolite and we were not told a return time prior to this. I had to stop playing and return my rental clubs. It really ruined what was almost a perfect first golf experience.

Greens were in good condition. Course conditions look a lot better than the last time I played it! Good job!

I always avoided Moffett Field because I heard that it was a dog track. However, I finally went to play there after they made it public on an online golf tee-​time website. Was pleasantly surprised. Moffett is a really fun track that is in pretty good condition. While it is not a high end track, for the price it is very good. It has a fair amount of trees that force you to shape shots. Every hole is different and doesn’t play like most one dimensional munis. The greens are in pretty good condition. The short game practice area is very good because you can hit up to a 60 yard shot and has a good practice bunker. The range isn’t great but it still allows you to warm up before a round. Facilities are pretty low key but has a nice outdoor patio to grab some food or a beer. One of the better munis in the area.

I enjoy playing golf. It’s just that I have a hard time hitting those little balls. However, I have, on rare occasions, managed to sink a putt though. I haven’t taken golf lessons in 50 years and am not a regular golfer by any stretch. Out of the 15 or so times I have even attempted golf all but one has been at this course starting back when the Navy Exchange ran the place. I was there recently for the first time since the new management took over and I was very impressed. The course is clean and well laid out. It is challenging enough for regular golfers but not so challenging as to discourage amateurs like me. The new management had a representative out on the course to give us advice and help us to navigate the course. I do plan on taking lessons so that I will be able to play regularly someday. My major complaint is the food. Although the club house is clean and comfortable and the bar well stocked, the food is absolutely atrocious. In fact it is worse than atrocious. The burgers are frozen, bought pre-​made by the dozen and I don’t even want to know where the hot dogs and other items come from. Unfortunately, the club is the only option for food on the course. Please, for the sake of common decency do something about the food. The club would have great potential with better food.
One last thing: GOOGLE uses up most of the parking with their buses. They need to put those buses elsewhere.

Nice place to get some lunch before or after playing some gold or even hitting a bucket of balls, drinks and food are nicely priced and have a good selection to choose from. It’s a cash only spot so if you’re planning on going there make sure to bring some even though they have an ATM inside it used to not work with my card even though it had money on it. But it’s definitely a nice place to go and hangout at after a long day at work with some coworkers.

We had our 3^rd High School golf event this past weekend. What a dramatic transformation this place has taken on.
Fairways, use to describe it as bombing practice targets, get your kidney belts ready. The Fairways are 100% better than in years past.
Greens, use to have to bring your own rolling pin to get a decent putt.
Rough has been addressed nicely. For the pure pace of play. I only lost one ball. Needed to loose that one.
Management, Gary Pearce is a pure delight to work with, he sets standards for his staff. Gary actually retrieved bags from our players. That would have never happened.
Food and Beverage, it was a great suggestion for Taco bar.
Overall some how the transformation has been dramatic. I highly recommend this venue for fund raising events.

Challenging course, nice doglegs, good greens. Little overpriced Fri-​Sun otherwise a good deal.

Two months after golfing here, I was contacted by the new GM of Golf Operations at Moffett Field, Gary Pearce. He invited our group to come back to visit, since the course is now under a new management group, OB Sports, based out of Arizona. What follows is my email review sent to Gary, re-​posted here. Our golf outing was on Saturday ⁵⁄₂.
We got to meet Gary on the 9^th hole and we let him know how much the course has improved! I usually lose a few balls between the 1^st tee and the 9^th tee, but I was able to retain the same ball through 10 total holes! A new record!
From my email:
«Here is a run down of my thoughts throughout the day with input from my friends who joined.
Front 9, great up keep around the fairways. The 8^th hole in particular had a gigantic mound of dirt and mud when we played in March, which is now a nice sand trap with rope barriers. Great call on that.
The 11^th hole I believe (the dog leg left long hole) was where I lost my first ball, hooking hard hard left into the canal. Certainly a bummer but not anything you can prevent as that was „user error“ aka a hack shot.
The 16^th hole, also a tricky dog leg left, was a bit difficult to shoot from with the fence barrier eating slice shots, and hook shots were goners as well. But the reduction of tall grass before the mound of dirt allowed us to recover a few miss shots. In all the course looked fantastic and my girlfriend was so happy to play here yesterday and she was glad you saw her great drive on the 9^th.
There were a few things I’d recommend to improve the experience which I will dive into. First, the water jug at I believe on the 4^th hole was empty. It was a sunny day and I know it is frowned upon to bring food/​drinks from home, however the lack of water on this hole was the first thing I noticed.
Secondly, the food situation inside the club house could be improved & streamlined by offering simpler meals such as French fries and pre-​made sandwiches. I say this because my friends who were golfing with us wanted food but did not wait to wait over 10 – 15 mins for it, as that would push back our pace of play. The foursome in front of us had actually ordered just before we reached the club house, and there seemed to be confusion on what they had ordered. (3 turkey burgers and something else I believe) and my friend was at the register wanting food, but ultimately skipped because he did not want to hold up our play. To rectify this, I would recommend either a phone number or a direct phone call box to the bar and grill for orders to be placed at the 9^th hole tee box. This is common at courses such as Deep Cliff as well as San Jose Muni. Poplar golf course has a small cash only shack that serves chips and hot dogs and drinks of the minimal sort as you turn for the 10^th tee. My girlfriend and I ate a big breakfast and brought our leftovers to snack on, but the other couple was left a bit hungry and frustrated by that little hiccup.
To conclude, I’d love to visit this course in the future, great views, challenging holes and much better up keep than I first experienced. Aside from the food thing that happened to the other couple in our group, I’d rate my experience here a solid 9.5÷10.»
So basically, this course is great, affordable, and has improved SO much from the time we visited 2 months ago. If you have yet to golf here, call them up and make a tee time. Even if you walk on to the course with out a tee time, you will not be waiting too long at all. Great golf carts that looked and felt brand new. Excellent experience.
We will be back.

If you read my comments below, you will see that my opinion has changed and my faith is restored in this little gem of a find. The (new) course manager graciously sent me an email apologizing for what had happened on our last visit and invited us back. We went immediately because we really do like the course and pace of play. This time, we breezed easily through the gate and the staff at the course couldn’t have been more accommodating. It’s truly a fun course to play, especially on a Saturday at about a 4-​hour pace — which is really unheard of in the Bay Area.
Old review: While the fees are very reasonable at this course, the follow-​through by the golf course staff is horrible. They didn’t leave our names with the security at the gate so we cooked our heels for 40 minutes. The attitude of the staff was insolent and we had to call repeatedly to ask them to follow up with the gate so we could get in. As I write this we still haven’t gotten in after one hour. We will never be back!

If you have never been here, it is one of the best kept secrets in the bay! You get a stunning view of the water, to the Moffett Field Hangers, and even the hills in Fremont! Great quality, challenging holes, and always something different at each hole.
This is the best you can get– especially if you grab the twilight price– which is an 18 hole for the price of a 9 hole. Never been? Find a friend that works at NASA or can get you on there! You will have a great time!

Moffet Field Golf Course is now open to the public. It used to be reserved for the military and to contractors who worked with the base. Now it is open to all, however, you have to check into the front gate of the compound and provide your ID to security. It’s kind of a hassle to tell you the truth.
The course itself has potential, but it could use better maintenance of fairways and greens. Perhaps being close to the Bay is the reason, but some fairways are bare and the greens are pretty slow. Overall the layout is ok, a variety of dog legs and straight holes mixed in among the trees.
They do have a large practice putting green and a short game area to hit your chips. The clubhouse staff is friendly and accommodating.
You may want to give it a try if you need to play a military course, but don’t expect pristine conditions, it’s definitely for the muni golfer.

Played here yesterday after work. It’s been 3 years since I’ve been here.
The one thing that’s great about this course is that it is cheap for contractors. Twilight rates after 3pm are only 15 bucks, super twilight rates after 1.5 hours before sunset is only 10 bucks. It’s nice to play here in June since you have the most sunlight. You’ll need to be an approved contractor to be allowed into Moffett Field as there are two guards who will check your ID. (Not sure which companies are included in the list)
Seems like the fairways are not well kept. There are patches of dirt here and there. What is the most nasty thing is, on the 13 hole, there is just blue gunk all over the first half of the fairway. Not sure what it is.
The place doesn’t seem too busy during the weekday. When I started late afternoon, I was the 2^nd to last person to tee off. And it was a comfortable game pace from there.
This golf course has a pitching green, nice putting green, and a terrible range that is all dirt and golf balls that have been used for numerous years.
Bottom Line: Cheap golf prices for a decent 18 hole course. Enough to get your golf fix.
