People have been telling me and my husband on separate occasions that we need to come check out this park. Finally we decided to go. It is far for us but we thought the drive would be well worth the views. And the views didn’t disappoint! The trails are covered in rocks so you can’t go too fast, I would hate to trip on one and fall. Their are also A LOT of people. It seems everybody knows about this place. That’s great but sometimes when your hiking you just want a little peace and serenity. Your allowed to bring your dogs as long as they’re leashed and well behaved. You also have to clean up after them & I will warn you trash cans are few & far. Since it is a state park you have to pay $ 5 per car at the front gate. This park has a lot of different trails and wild ponies & cows are everywhere. This is very cool to see animal in their habitats but I will warn that they are still wild & unpredictable so I would keep small children away from them.

I’ll take a hike before the beach any day of the week! And I do, with some frequency. My father and I travel along 81 and then 58 back to Richmond each year. And the Grayson Highlands State Park is one of our stops. There is just something really awesome about nature and wind blowing through the trees. As far as hikes go, this is an easy one. Tip: the only pony I saw was really ticked off at a woman who brought her yippy dog along. Keep your dog on a leash.

Just a three things to say… 1) Beautiful spot to wander through when on the Appalachian Trail. 2) On the approach trail from the south, you walk through a bunch of Fraser Fir and it smells like Christmas! 3) WILDPONIES! They come up and lick you, but will also take a dump and pee at will so watch out.
