Ciudad Colonial

Handy go-​to spot for a meal when you are at the mall. Got the lunch fajita this time. New menu and selections make a great addition to the restaurant. Was greeted and waited on very promptly.

Popped in on an early Sunday afternoon. I was by myself, so as I usually do in these instances, I asked to be seated at the bar. I was the only one in there. The better to hide my day drinking, I guess.
I chose this place for the great reviews, and it did not disappoint. However, I am easy to please in the Mexican food area. My hard taco had excess cheese on it, which is ever to my liking. The chicken in my taco and enchiladas was perfect. My bowl of queso rocked. Margarita was good, too. I only had one and proceeded to have a little tipsy walk around the mall.
I cannot compare to any other food in Muncie, but I really liked it, and the price was very good!

I had the mega burrito my nephew had arrozcone pollo. Both were delicious. The restaurant is beautiful. I definitely recommend this restaurant.

The food was okay, the drinks were pretty good, and the service was acceptable. Overall, pretty average.

The place is quite convenient & a good atmosphere, being at the WEST Mall Entrance, by PENNY’S. My waiter was super, the food OK. Being a Friday Evening, I figured I would be hard to get a seat, but there were only a few customers. There were a few folks enjoying the patio dining area, with the sunset & roses charming the setting.

I’ve loved it every time I’ve went. 10% off for bsu students!!! Everyone always talks about puertos and it’s more expensive and not as good. I’ve been to both many times and I by far like this place more. It’s at the mall now. If you like margaritas they hook it up with the tequilla

We are converts to Ciudad Colonial from our former fav Puerto Vallarta. Staff is courteous efficient and the food consistently excellent. It has become our «go to» restaurant in Muncie in its new location at the mall.

FYI, this restaurant has moved from the strip mall on Granville into the mall.
This is a solid Mexican restaurant – it is part of a small chain including «Casa del Sol» downtown. They have all the standard Midwest Mexican – I’m a fan of the tacos al pastor and the carnitas. Pretty good flautas, too. The chips and salsa, burritos, fajitas, etc., are all solid, but standard.
It isn’t the «original Muncie Mexican», but it’s pretty good.

OK. I get it. It’s Muncie, Indiana. You don’t expect really great Mexican food, and you don’t expect the population to really «get it.» That’s definitely the case. In my years in Muncie, I would always here people suggest «let’s go to ‘Portas’ tonight» (Um, there’s no «a» in there, chief!). There’s nothing wrong with PV, but it’s very pedestrian, overcrowded, and not a great value.
Ciudad, on the other hand, is the opposite. We never waited for a table. The food was better, the prices were lower (and there’s even a discount for folks with BSU IDs and even BIGGER discounts if you clip their coupons), the drinks were much better (and cheaper!), and the service is faster.
So, from someone who’s been to places with great Mexican food, who’s LIVED in places with far more options, and who has a pretty refined palate, trust me: Ciudad is easily an above-​average Mexican restaurant in most places (unless you’re in San Antonio or the Southwest or something), and a 5-​star by Muncie standards.

All in all, I was underwhelmed w/​Ciudad Colonial.
I had high expectations granted, given the positive Unilocal reviews. Arrived at 11:40a on a Sunday — and waited to get seated for too long given nobody was here. 1 table and two booths occupied — Crickets (and futbol on TVs) otherwise.
I don’t mind a greasy spoon but immediately on being seated my significant other brought to my attention the very dirty curtains/​dividers between booths. ick.
Chips and salsas were brought promptly. We advised our very pleasant server that it was the initial visit and we’d need a minute with the menus.
Our party of 3 chose Vegetarian Plate A, Shrimp Taco Salad w/​fajita vegetables and a Chicken Chimichanga w/​refried beans.
I can’t imagine how on earth the kitchen could keep up with a busy dining room — it took 20 minutes for our orders.
The taco salad received high marks for the grilled shrimp but votes were portion size was light.
The chimi was well received and accompanied by sour cream, guacamole, lettuce and tomato (surprising given it was an a la carte order).
The Vegetarian Plate consisted of a tostada, bean burrito and cheese enchilada — I deemed a ‘fair’ order — beans were not seasoned and very runny — there were no sides w/​the Veg Dinner. It was a very small plate given the $ 7.50 price and I found myself noshing out the remaining chips.
I’d have a difficult choice driving past a PV to come here again but it was OK.

Having just moved to the area from San Diego, I was afraid to try any «Mexican» food around here. Out this way, most places are more TexMex than actual Mexican food. SoCal has ruined me, for the most part. I had been hearing great things about this place from locals, so I decided I’d give it a try. These guys are the REAL DEAL! I felt like I was back on the West Coast again, if even for just a night out. They even have horchata, which if you’ve never had it before, freakin’ go try it! It’s heavenly.
Good lord, I’ve made myself hungry after writing this review. Might have to pay them a visit for dinner tonight!

We have been going to Ciudad since they opened and the food and service has been top quality since day one. One of the few places where the staff has remained the same with virtually no turn over since they opened. The owner and his wife are almost always there working just as hard as anyone else in the place.
The food is excellent no matter what you order, we have never had anything we didn’t like. The home made salsa is delicious, though I have to get the mild. The recipes are from the owners home region of Mexico and you can depend on the waiters to give you good advise if you tell them what you like. Prices are reasonable and you get a LOT for your money.
Ciudad is always clean and you can tell everyone who works there takes great pride in everything about the restaurant from the service to how you like your food.
This is one locally owned business that provides great food, service and I hope they remain in Muncie for a very very long time.

Another great Mexican restaurant in Muncie — you can never have too many! The servers at Cuidad are great, they are extremely attentive and provide quick drinks and food service.
The margaritas are excellent — Tuesday nights are margarita specials and an excellent occasion to check out the food.

It’s hands down the best Mexican Food in Muncie. The others places can’t compete because their enchilada sauces taste like they came out of cans. Ciudad’s has great service and deliver a good time consistently. The prices are fair and the quality of the food is worth every penny.
It would be important to note that I do not go to Mexican joints to drink margaritas so I don’t have any information regarding the quality of their drinks. I’m simply speaking about the food.

The tamal was nicely done, fairly large and smothered in a creamy tomato sauce — much better than those at PV. The carnitas were a tad gamy, which can probably be chalked up to being a specialty dish that isn’t sold consistently. I have to reiterate the cheap Mexican beer specials too.

When my parents took me to a Mexican place in Muncie that wasn’t Puerto Vallarta, I had my doubts. But finally, there’s a good Mexican alternative to Puerto Vallarta in Muncie, something I thought would never happen.
One way I can say that Ciudad Colonial kicked ass was service. These guys were attentive like PV was attentive ten years ago! The food was pretty good, the meat to me was of better quality and prepared better than PV, and everything seemed less greasy. The salsa, complimentary to all diners, is far superior to the pepper-​water they give you at PV.
This place should give PV a run for its money. Which is good, because the last few times I was in town it seemed like Puerto Vallarta was going down a bit. I worry a bit about the location… Granville Ave seems to be a graveyard of good intentions, even with the mall nearby, this strip mall isn’t terribly visible. CC is in the old Godfather’s Pizza, if you go back that far in Muncie lore.

The place finally got a liquor license, and with 2.50 specials on small ‘ritas, I’d say that Porta’s better watch their back. I like this place because it’s promoting competition because let’s face it, Porta’s has ruled this roost for far too long. No, the place doesn’t offer many surprises — typical Americanized Mexican dishes smothered in runny cheese, but it’s better than hitting up the other chains that litter McGalliard. Speaking of which — what the hell happened, Muncie? I swear, this entire city is the poster child of shitty American franchises. Anyways — Ciudad ain’t all that bad. I just wish that vegetarian food didn’t mean cheese food. I do like vegetables and whole beans, not just smushy refried beans. I’ll stick to the taquerias out west while all you suckers can enjoy your skinny enchiladas and runny cheese dip.

i tried this place out because i was curious, most mexican restaurants in muncie are decent, but not great. but ciudad’s food is excellente! much better, dare i say, then puerto’s. pv has got the market on margarita pitchers, but their food is lacking. seriously, go try this place out, it’s next to domo and they even have an outdoor patio. i’ve wanted puerto to do this for years.
