I used to stop into this Dollar Tree anytime I had a few bucks and a few minutes to waste. A few months ago, I took in some hand towels I’d bought at a different store. I had since lost the receipt, but they were in the Dollar Tree bag and had their cheap-store-brand tags still on them. I didn’t ask for a refund, since I didn’t have a receipt, but I did ask to exchange them. The haggard-looking employee rolled her eyes at me and said she wouldn’t do it. I tried to convince her, and she asked if I could show her my bank account record or anything that proved I bought them at Dollar Tree. ??? I bluffed, to see if she was serious. «Sure!» I said and pretended to surf my bank app on my phone. She again made a rude face and walked away. I heard her as she talked in the«office»(about 10 feet away from customers) saying loudly, «Well, she’s not getting her money back, you can bet on that.» I said, to match her tone, «Excuse me??» That’s when another employee came to my rescue. She collected the towels and told me quietly that I could go find an equal number of items and she would make the exchange. I quickly grabbed up items that looked interesting to me and came back to the register. Still shocked at the way I’d been talked about, I asked the [kind] cashier if the store manager knew that she behaved like that. She blushed a little as she said, «She IS the manager on duty,» and then, genuinely, «I’m sorry she said that.» I felt myself almost gasp. I said loudly, «It’s not your fault! Don’t apologize for her. Somebody needs to inform her that it’s not acceptable to make nasty comments about a customer when she is standing within earshot. I will never be back here.» I took my items and left, and I haven’t been back to this or any other location since then. Seriously, I’ve worked in retail. I know customers can be annoying, and you have bad days just like anyone else. But you take your complaints and your rude comments to the breakroom or to the bar after work like a decent person. You do not snark on a customer as she stands 10 feet away. As my husband would say, «There’s a reason she’s a manager at Dollar Tree.»
