I have been eating Schlotzsky’s for over 30 years. It’s along the lines of a treat since there isn’t one close to where I live so I only eat at one about once a year. I have always enjoy their sandwiches and for me today was no exception. The problem is my son found a hair on his sandwich and the general feel of the place is it’s run down. Service was ok, not the friendliest but efficient. $ 50.00 for four people seems a little high but we were all full when done. So overall, it could have been better but I will come back.

Founded and still based out of Austin(Texas), this southern deli franchise currently has locations in 35 states and three foreign countries. I wish this wasn’t the only location in the area because my family and I really love Schlotzsky’s. Their deli sandwiches are delicious and just taste different than any other delis I’ve been to before. Often when I’m in North Charleston, I’ll try to make a Schlotzsky’s run when I have the chance. I really like the Original Sandwich(lean smoked ham, Genoa and cotto salamis, melted cheddar, mozzarella, and Parmesan cheeses, layered with black olives, red onion, lettuce, tomato, mustard, and their signature dressing on a toasted Sourdough bun) with their BBQ chips. Everything on their menu looks good though. I so wish there was a location closer to my house.

I ordered through the drive-through yesterday for a late lunch in a bit of a hurry. I asked if they had any chicken soups, and they didn’t. I guess that’s not surprising given that it’s early September, but I figured with as many soups(especially with chicken) as were on the online menu, there might be more of a choice than vegetable soup and chili. I ordered a reuben for my husband, and the lady asked me what kind of bread I wanted, rye or sourdough. It took three tries for me to understand her, and I’m not sure if it was because the drive-through speaker system was bad or because she was hard to understand. She seemed clear enough at the window, and I don’t have a hearing problem, so I suspect it was the speaker. I requested sourdough for the reuben, and I ordered vegetable soup and a half a ham and cheese sandwich for myself. She then asked me if I wanted the«you pick two,» and I said yes, so she confirmed I wanted chili. I told her no, that I had wanted vegetable soup. We did not order drinks because we have drinks in the office. I was not given a total for my order and was told to drive up to the window. Not«please drive up,» just«drive up to the window.» I drove up, debit card in hand, and was told my order was $ 13 and change. I thought that was a little pricey, but that’s how it seems to go these days, and the total didn’t seem far off from what I expected. I gave the lady my debit card, which she swiped and immediately gave back. I was not given a receipt at that time so figured it would be in the bag after it processed. I was given my food after three or four minutes, and the window was closed. I thanked her for the food, and I was perfectly nice throughout the transaction, but it didn’t hear a «thank you» or a «have a nice day» before that window closed, just the swish and thud of the window closing. I got back to my office and gave my husband his reuben while I sat down at my desk to eat my food. I was a little surprised to learn that a ham and cheese sandwich comes with black olives in it, which of course were melted into the cheese, so I couldn’t remove them without making a mess and pulling off all the cheese. I checked the Schlotzky’s site, and apparently that’s typical for that sandwich, but the sign at the drive-through didn’t say anything about olives. That’s a little disappointing for someone with a serious distaste for olives, and I’ve never heard of that being a normal addition to a ham and cheese sandwich. Also, the soup tasted worse than soup out of a can(overly salty and way too many spices), plus it was only a small cup — very expensive for what you get. I could’ve gone to the Bi-Lo down the road and paid a lot less for a much tastier can of Campbell’s or Progresso and gotten more soup for my money, too. Also, the saltines I was given were incredibly stale. Overall, my meal was a complete disappointment, My husband’s reuben ended up being on rye after all the hubbub over which type of bread I ordered. Thankfully he didn’t care and said his reuben was good. That’s the only reason I’m giving this place two stars instead of the minimum of one. I noticed after unpacking the food at my office that there was no receipt in the bag. This morning I looked at my bank account and saw a debit at Schlotzky’s for $ 15 and change. So either I grossly overpaid for a truly disappointing lunch(mind you, no drinks), the lady at the window gave me the wrong total, I misheard her, or she or someone else in the store added $ 2 onto my debit card as a «tip.» I would dispute it with my bank, but I have no receipt and thus zero proof that I may have been overcharged, plus I’m not even sure that’s what happened, plus it’s not worth the effort over $ 2. I’ll just never go there again. It’s a shame because my husband and I work nearby, and I’ve been to other Schlotzky’s locations and haven’t had any complaints. I don’t know why, but this one is a little sad. My suggestion is to go up the road to Jersey Mike’s or Jimmy John’s and get a much tastier sandwich plus great service, definitely for less money even with drinks. I wish I had done that instead.

Schlotzsky’s food and service are pretty good. The pizzas have pesto sauce on them and are just the right size, and the sandwiches are great as well. I haven’t tried the soups to know how those are. The staff is very nice. However, the location really needs some TLC. Some of the restaurants in other cities are really nice and remodeled, but this one’s a little lacking. There were a few guys just hanging out on the curb by the restaurant, it was a little sketch. With a seedy motel next door, it’s not a place I’d want to go after dark. One awesome thing– register for the email list. You’ll get a coupon for a free sandwich or pizza for your birthday!

Deliciouso! We ordered 1 combination pizza without olives and 1 combination without olives and onions. Both orders were correct and the pizzas had a good fresh taste. Price was very reasonable too!

Busy. Food was good enough but the staff seemed overwhelmed and messed up some orders.
