A new and lonely lighthouse The north west corner of Nantucket is a beautiful but very dangerous place. A nasty rip extends off the point for almost a mile and I’ve seen standing waves ten feet high. Many ships and lives have been lost here. So in 1784 a wooden tower was constructed to help guide the way. It ended up burning down and was replaced by a stone lighthouse in 1816. This light served well but was finally washed away in a huge storm in 1984. It was decided that the cool old lighthouse should be replaced so an exact replica was completed in 1986 and still stands near the location of the old lighthouse. Great Point is not an easy place to get to. No real roads, you either need a four wheel drive vehicle or walk about six miles in heavy sand. An extremely lovely but very isolated part of Nantucket. The light stands about 70 feet tall and can be seen by ships coming from America from the north west. If you manage to go out to the lighthouse you will probably have the whole place to yourself. Great Point is a wild and wonderful place that probably looks exactly like it did centuries ago. Not easy to reach but well worth the effort.

we drove to the northeast corner of the island to the Coskata-Coatue Wildlife Refuge. We lowered the tire pressure to 13lbs and went on a 20 minute drive through the grasses and over the beach to the seals and the lighthouse. An amazing trip out to the lighthouse is a GREAT memory to have. Rent a jeep, pack a sandwich, and head out for the day to hang out with the seals and a pretty private beach.
