Lyle’s School of Hair Design Salon

My visits to Lyle started when a good friend began school there. I was a little hesitant because I had never had my hair cut/​colored at a school, but I decided to give it a try anyway.
The building is a little shady looking, but once you enter you realize it is just a budget friendly school. If you are expecting fancy, do not go here. The students are hardworking, helpful, they listen and care how your haircut turns out.
I have had my hair cut, colored, highlighted, you name it. All have turned out well and without complaints. If you are looking for a budget friendly change, I definitely recommend Lyles.

Let’s be honest: I go here because I’m broke.
I go here because I’m freaking broke and I usually have a ton of respect for students cutting hair. They listen, they care, and each cut they do is important to them because they are learning and it’s not just another sale. Today however, I just can’t get past my experience and more than likely will not go back. I’ll take the extra time to drive to Salon Professional (hello, self, Professional, duh) or the school in Franklin.
I went in for a simple trim — ONE inch. I had even washed it myself since I had gone to the gym prior and didn’t want to spend a lot of time in the chair. Before I even got to my chair station, the instructor walked through what the student would with my appointment right up front, meaning she’s running her fingers through my hair before I really even have a chance to set my purse or phone down. Then, when my cut begins, the student literally complained about how tangly my hair is — THE WHOLE TIME. I’m sorry, I’ve dealt with my hair all my life and it’s incredibly fine and tangles very easily; I’m sorry. Not only that, but I was insulted because it tangled so much. I kept hearing how much damage I had and how this was so much fun (for the student) to do. Really? I hate writing bad reviews but REALLY?! I understand it had been a little while since I last had it trimmed, but come on, use a little professionalism! I’m terribly so sorry that yes, gasp, I don’t always have time to get my hair professionally styled and treated. I just don’t. Please do not make me feel bad that yes, gasp again, I have to wear my hair up sometimes for work or an event that I am **working.**
Overall, I walked out not feeling too great about myself. Haircuts are supposed to relax and refresh you, or at least your hair. With this appointment I’ll be seeing grays by tomorrow. Thank God for my mother always telling me «hair grows,» because I’ll be waiting on my FOUR INCHES to come back to me.

I’ve passed this unassuming blue building many times over the past 10 years and always thought, «Huh, what an interesting location for a cosmetology school.» Until now, I’ve never had a need to venture inside. My hairstylist happens to be a student there (as well as a very good friend) and it worked out better to get my haircut at the school this time (Saturday) than in her living room.
The building looks a bit shady from the outside. Probably not your first choice for a pedicure just from judging at first glance. However, once you step inside you would say to yourself, «Hey, this ain’t so bad!» It must be kept in mind that this is a cosmetology school (a budget friendly one at that) and not a $ 60/​haircut high-​end salon.
I was greeted upon entering by two very friendly older women who I’m assuming are either instructors at the school, or do this as a part-​time semi-​retirement gig. My stylist was ready for me and away I went!
I decided to not have my hair washed (since I had just washed it myself only hours before) and had my stylist just spray it wet and start snipping away. My stylist always does a fabulous job and this time was no exception. A haircut (without any blow dry styling) was $ 8. Can’t beat that with a stick! You can leave the stylist a separate tip if you wish (however not required) and they get «hours» for the appointments they have in the salon.
This place has great potential and I hope that there are plans for renovation in their future! Definitely check this place out if you are looking for an inexpensive haircut or treatment, but perhaps best to check references first. I cannot vouch for anyone else but my gal!
