The Cat Shoppe & the Dog Store

I love this place. They have tons of food and toys and necessities for dogs and cats, and cats and kittens that run around everywhere that you can play with and pet.

If you love cats like I do, you need to stop in The Cat Shoppe. Even if you don’t need anything cat related, stop in & visit with someone the cats that roam the store & that are available for adoption.
In the summer of 2010 we stopped in to look around. We were ready to add a member to our family & looked through the adoption book. We found a little boy named «Mr Big». He was being fostered by a nice lady out in the Green Hills area because his previous owners had left him out in the Nashville flood & abandoned him. Five years later & his name is Fendi & he’s the neediest little cat you’ll ever met & I wouldn’t change that for the world. I love cats. Enough about me & my cats and more about the shop.
The staff is always so friendly & willing to help you. If you’ve got a question they’re always happy to answer it or get you in contact with someone who can. A couple reviews complain about this & that but the staff is there to HELP CATS. They’re going to do what is best for the cats. They want to know that you’re going to be the forever home for that cat. So don’t get rude because they ask you a lot of questions.
You’re able to also volunteer in the store in the mornings to help play with the cats & scoop poo if you want!

This review is a few months old — I’m so sad I forgot to review it while still living in Nashville! I still think about this store from time to time — it was a highlight of living in the Music City!
The Cat Shoppe is one of the most magical places I’ve ever visited. Don’t you just hate going to a traditional pet store and seeing cats in tiny cages meowing sadly as you walk by? It breaks my heart every time. At the Cat Shoppe, they let their rescue kitties live freely in the store. Doesn’t that just make your heart warm thinking about it?
There are always different cats, ages, sizes, circumstances etc. Be sensitive to some of the more skittish ones and always ask staff which ones you can hold. Otherwise, grab a wand toy and make a cats day by playing with them for a few minutes while you shop.
Not only do I love the rescue component of this store, but they have great merchandise as well. A huge variety of toys — including many locally made ones — as well as a good selection of nutritious food. We’ve even picked up some small plates that are easier for our kitty to eat out of (apparently they don’t like their whiskers to touch anything while they’re eating, so a nice flat tea plate is perfect!)
The staff is extremely knowledgeable and passionate about rescuing cats. If you’re considering adopting your first, or adding to your kitty family, ask Penny or any of the other wonderful people here for their guidance and they will happily assist you.
So when you need to buy an item for your pet, support a local business AND get your heart warming does of kitty snuggles by stopping into The Cat Shoppe!

Cat Rescue extraordinaire/​store owner, Chris and helpers: Robyn, Penny & Wendy are beyond incredible for all the work they do beyond just running the store. You’d never know the horrors they see and deal with on a daily basis. It takes a very special person to do what they do and continue doing despite the emotional toll it takes… I love supporting this store.

This place gets it. Absolutely loved visiting The Cat Shoppe. Great items and the cats roaming free were so wonderful to interact with.

This place is kitten heaven!!! In the heart of Berry Hill, The Cat Shoppe is sweet little retail store with cats and kittens (available for adoption) everywhere you turn… Really what more could you ask for? These people do great work.

A shop that sells cat and dog related items and helps rescue cats. Seriously as good as it gets.

The most unhelpful people I have ever called. Usually, people in the animal business help others who need help and direction. I was cut off immediately on the phone when calling to ask for help with a rescue situation. I wasn’t asking them to take the cats, just if they knew of any local rescues I could call or information they could offer. Completely rude. I will not be spending another dime there EVER.

I absolutely love the Cat Shoppe. It is a great place just to go and see the cats that are in the store. There are always new ones because they get adopted. The people that work there are friendly. Before I lived here I would come to visit every couple of months and I would always want to go to the Cat Shoppe just to pet the cats. How could anyone not like this place? Plus they have cat food, toys, and gifts.

The best place … Try to go once a week … Instant smile when i pull up. The animals are just as amazing as the people that run it … So glad we have a place like this in Nashville !!!

The Cat Shoppe is amazing. The ladies who run this store are very knowledgeable about cat behavior and nutrition. They can help you find the right food and litter for your cat if you cat is having issues in either areas. My cats are finally at a healthy weight thanks to their recommendation!
They are so incredibly passionate and dedicated to the cats they rescue. I started out fostering a blind cat they took in who was juggled between homes a few times (after about 2 weeks we decided to adopt him). They were so helpful in the transition stage — providing information on how to introduce him to the new cats, making sure my home was safe, etc. Every time I go to the store now to buy food they always ask how blind King Henry is doing. They remember you and the cats you adopt — it’s just the amazing kind of ladies they are.
I recommend the Cat Shoppe for adopting cats and if you already have a cat, as a place to buy food, litter and toys. They will help your kitty stay happy and healthy.

The kittens in the shop were so adorable!!! They’re just running loose everywhere! Kitty heaven! And the shop has lots of cool novelties. There’s a room for cat stuff and a room for dog stuff. My favorite purchase was my English fine bone tea cup with a variety of dogs painted on it which is perfect for a dog lover like me! Most importantly, they are able to house a bunch of cats and kittens in this store. Thats what they’re about, finding homes for Nashville kitties. I seriously want a kitten from here. They’re so sweet! And for a nonprofit organization, I’m really impressed that they’re open 7 days a week! And they’re easy to find too! Very close to the 100 Oaks shopping center.

The Cat Shoppe is like Disneyland for me. You walk in to get your cats treats and toys and all these super sweet adoptable kittens vie for your affection. They have a great selection of cat toys and snacks. My cats love the freeze dried all natural chicken and salmon snacks.

while on vacation in Nashville we saw this place listed in a book Hertz gave us and thought we have to go check it out. I mean we left 3 chihuahuas at home and we always try to bring them back special treats. this place had tons of stuff like mugs, etc. along with treats. we grabbed some beef treats, a notepad and a chihuahua figure to go with my ever growing collection. dogs loved the treats when we gave them some last night after finally getting home :)

Expectation: Cats galore. Cats on my head, cats on my shoulders, cats trying to escape
Reality: a few cats sleeping on assorted cat toys and lots and lots of dog and cat food and toys.
Reality was still better than my pre-​Cat Shoppe life. The salespeople were very friendly and helpful! Definitely going back!

Cats! I love this place. Please excuse my inner creepy cat lady. As someone who has dreamt of retiring to open a cat farm, this place is great.
Like someone else noted, the Cat Shoppe and Dog Store are in the same place but you won’t find any dogs running around, just lots of cats. The Cat Shoppe is kind of an oddity of cat toys, treats, food, and paraphernalia for the cat lover or collector. The dog store is the same except for, you guessed it, dogs. It’s mostly organized by breed. I love that the cats at the Cat Shoppe are adoptable and it’s okay to go around and play with them. Most seem very content to be there with full run of the store and a nice catio. The ones that are a little less social are sent to live next door in the dog store until they’re adopted.
The prices are what you’d expect considering they aren’t a national chain and I believe there is a $ 10 minimum on credit cards. I particularly enjoyed this place when I was living in locations where pets weren’t allowed and I missed the company of animals. I also got a really great toy there for the cats I have now. It’s called da bird and it’s basically feathers on a bouncy fishing line. They can’t get enough!

Very nice shop with just about everything you could ever want for your feline friends. I loved how the adoptable cats were free to move around the store and play with toys and other cats as they pleased.
However, I found the owner of the shop to be somewhat difficult to work with when it came to discussing adoptions. We (my fiancé and I) inquired about a specific kitten and instead of being greeted with any kind of enthusiasm that I expected from someone who works in cat rescue, we were instead countered with a series of questions about our opinions on declawing, fixing, and the like. We were also told that we could not adopt the one kitten without adopting his friend. After a few minutes of deliberation we decided to adopt the second kitten as well as we would love to give both cats a loving home for life. When we told the owner we would like to adopt both kittens she again seemed almost displeased if not at least very unsure of us. She then gave us the phone number of someone to call to request a home visit.
My fiancé and I were ready to give two cats a warm, loving home but were met with a very odd and uncomfortable resistance. She even suggested we just go look around at the pound because so many of those cats are killed or even to search on craigslist. I don’t doubt this woman’s love of cats but her seemingly unwilling resolve to deter potential adopters is at the very least extremely puzzling.

I have never seen SO MUCH DOG STUFF in my life! The dog-​aphenilia is sorted by dog breed, so name a breed and you can get the tshirt/​coffee mug/​bumpersticker/​pot holder/​iphone case or whatever that says «my XXX is the bestest!»
There are a few feline sales associates lingering near the cash register, but they are old hands at helping dogs find the things they need. Great shop — if I had a dog, I would totally be geeking out with all the «green is the grass under my wiener» bumper stickers and «wag more bark less» magnets. Woof!

I am not going to lie, sometimes I go to The Cat Shoppe when I am having a bad day. Nothing cures the blues like loving on some kittens! I also get my cat food and other cat supplies here. I first discovered The Cat Shoppe when my cat was having a terrible skin allergies. I knew instantly that I had to change his food. I initially tried some grain free food from petsmart but a large bag was CRAZY expensive! The Cat Shoppe had a great selection of grain free foods for a good price. The staff is very helpful, friendly and knowledgeable.
ALSO! If you are looking to adopt a kitty, go to The Cat Shoppe. Most of those little fluff balls need a good home. It’s a great place to adopt because the kittens/​cats are well socialized with other cats as well as people.

yeah, there’re kitties everywhere. There’re a few videos on Youtube and you can see how they run the place.
The place smells like cat, for you cat lovers out there who think cats have no smell, no, they do, they smell like cat… no, not like kitty litter, like cat… no, not urine, cat. No not cat food (ok, yes cat food) but cat… and the best way to figure this smell out is sniff warm, sunned fur, that’s the underlying scent of this place.
it’s clean, there are happy kitties everywhere, and they have a lot of toys and cat food that’s good for your cat but that your cat won’t care one lick about. Sorry, cats are bastards, they want cheap crap, not something that might be good for them.
You can get them cat food that contains no grains, it’ll include blueberries, oceanfish (because lakefish evidently aren’t to the finer tastes of an animal that regularly licks its butt), and all sorts of things you’d never know would be good for a cat but evidently are.
Oh, I’m sure all the stuff is good for them, I don’t really doubt it, but for me I have to mask the good in with kitty-​crap-​generic-​stank-​cat-​fud in order to get them to eat it.
Their prices, I’ll say not particularly great, however I do not go to this place for bargain shopping… I go to play with a bunch of cats that I do not have to put up with when I go back home. While selection of kittehs varies, they always seem to be well acclimated to people. And it’s always worth it to mark out about 20 extra minutes just to play with some critters.
So far out of the 3 or 4 food things we’ve purchased there we’re at about 75% consumption (my kittehs hate dried puffy chicken) and I’ve gotten about 45 minutes of playing with other people’s critters… it’s been pretty much a win.
