The Cocoa Tree

I’m updating my review to cut down a few stars for a handful of reasons:
— Though I’m a big fan of supporting local artisans, the «new flavors» tend to feel like old hat and the quality has, of late, seemed to falter. The past few times I’ve been by, the chocolate seemed subpar, and the «flavors» didn’t really pop save for the ones with alcohol in them.
— Now that my star struck days have passed for this place, I find the hours frustrating, the flavors somewhat bland and the prices far above the level of the product’s worth.
— The last three times I’ve been in to try the special flavor of the month (during 3 different months), they’ve been out. I would think once you run out, making more would be the simple solution. But a bored, non-​committal «yea, we’re out of those.» was the only response I’ve gotten.
— I recently discovered that the shelf life of these products is limited. Granted, they are made fresh with all natural products. And I doubt any preservatives are used. But I had wanted to make a few gift boxes for my wedding party and mother, only to be told I had come too early and needed to come back closer to the date of the wedding (the life of the product is 5 – 6 days, I was told). I opted to just order from Godiva.
The staff are usually helpful and friendly enough. But at $ 2.25 a truffle… my response is hardly more than «meh». Sadly, I’m afraid to say my last visit was just that… my last.

What an excellent place to find a sweet treat for a loved one and while there don’t forget to take care of yourself! Cute take out boxes. I absolutely loved the cheesecake truffle… it can make any day better!

The cocoa tree is a wondrous world of chocolate, run by a food-​network profiled chocolatier. The truffles weave together unique and delicious ingredients– rose petals, champagne, sweet potato, even local beer! If you’re looking for chocolate, this is the place for you. A word of caution: you will want to order 10 truffles and eat them all. You will likely regret consuming that much sugar. Take it easy, start with the sweet potato truffle, and buy a few to take with you and give to friends. Don’t worry, you can always come back and buy more.

In a city that boasts more cupcakeries per capita, this place is a unique little gem in the quaint neighborhood of Germantown. It’s a fantastic chocolate shop that lives up to it’s name in every sense. It’s a great place to stop when you want to pick up a gift for someone or if you just want to indulge a bit.
The truffles are one of a kind with unique flavor combinations and they are oh so beautiful to look at. They are definitely the featured attraction every time. They also offer other confections, hot chocolate and lovely desserts. I’ve only come each visit to purchase the truffles. They have at least 20 different truffles with local infused flavors from Yazoo Brewing, Jack Daniels and the Loveless Café. More lovingly, all of their truffles are named for the people whom inspired the chocolatier, making this place even more special and inviting.
While I think that the chocolates are the best that Nashville has to offer, they also are a bit pricey at 2.25/truffle. They are worth every penny, but beware! The intoxicating aroma of chocolate can transport you into a nonsensical haze and you just have to have one of everything! Indulge with care!

So, I would like to let it be known that I like chocolate. Dark chocolate that is. The darker the better. I like my chocolate bars to be so black, Darth Vader would pale in fear. So with that said, The Cocoa Tree is my Death Star because it houses the most delectable Dark Chocolate a girl could ever want. It is so evil… it is good.
Any of the truffles will be a good choice. I really like the peppermint (seasonal), the yazoo and the champagne truffles. They are all so friggin good. Truffles are about $ 2.25 a piece so savor them… and yes, that is an order. The hot chocolate is really good too. It is like a flavor burst of, «Oh my friggin god that is so friggin good!».
So support your local chocolate biz. Buy that stuff up. And long live the Cocoa Tree.

My boyfriend brought Cocoa Tree truffles as a gift on our first date. To this day he still gets brownie points when he brings these home.
Personally, I think the price is fair, given the quality. But I tend to lose all semblance of common sense when I walk in the door and smell that chocolate.
The atmosphere fits Germantown, with the cute houses and the cute garden out front. Plus, Zackie’s is just across the street, which improves everything. The seating area is a little small, and there’s something about the quiet that isn’t welcoming. I always buy my chocolates and leave.
That said, I highly recommend the truffles, and the chocolate dipped oranges. I have heard good things about their drinks, and I will be sure to try them next time.

What a lovely chocolate shop.
They offer so many different types of truffles (ie. Margarita, Balsamic Raspberry, Salted Caramel, Ginger, Chai, Irish Cream, Mango, Chili Pepper, Sweet Potato, Orange, Bananas Foster, etc). Seasonal flavors are also available.
In addition to truffles, they sell chocolate covered cherries, chocolate covered espresso beans, malt balls, chocolate covered pretzels, cookies, and coffee.
The employees here were sweet and helpful. I asked one of the ladies for some recommendations and I ended up enjoying everything she suggested. I tried the Dark Chocolate Turtle, Rocher, and a few Truffles (Balsamic Raspberry, Salted Caramel, Sweet Potato, and Dark Chocolate). The chocolates were smooth, not too sweet, and satisfying.
The pieces of chocolate were packaged neatly. I love that the truffles are placed in cute Chinese take out boxes. The employee also included a truffles list in my bag, which had each truffle I ordered checked off. This was a nice touch.
If you’re in need of a chocolate fix, definitely pay a visit to The Cocoa Tree.

Are you are looking for a local gift for out of towners or Nashville noobs? Touring the city and like to check out the artisenal food scene? Or maybe your day has been sucktastic or you need to celebrate with CANDY?! Heck, maybe you’re just a snob who needs tasty tasty hand batched goodness…
Cocoa Tree is IT y’all — I mean yes, we have Olive and Sinclair as well, but for Truffles with creative flavors like Margarita (with white chocolate), chai and sweet potato — there is sure to be something for everyone; even vegan truffles and Tennessee/​southern specialties like Jack Daniels, Yazoo and Loveless Café inspired stuff. The café is very cute, serene and surrounded by some of Nashville’s other finest establishments, so its a good place to drop off for a small dessert or afternoon treat when you are done at the neighboring restaurants, shops and coffee places.
Is $ 2.25 steep for one truffle as other reviewers have mentioned? Yes. But honestly I just did a quick google search of other truffle-​teers (truffleliers, trufflesmakers?!) including my hometown fancy chocolates at Moonstruck and her prices are very fair and even about .25 cents cheaper than most! So there ya have it, supply and demand of premium and creative treats will run you $ 2-​$ 3 for 5 minutes of taste bud bliss.
Not your ‘everyday’ chocolate, but certainly worth the splurge now and again.

Nice folks, nice chocolate selection, small shop. Had a couple of truffles that were okay, not stellar, but okay. Again, nice shop.

A little pricey for the individual truffles (which are the stars of the shop). They are amazingly delicious though. They have a lot of unique flavors and always some kind of sample when I’m there. Not a place to stock up on chocolates but perfect for a post-​dinner splurge.
Also, tiramisu cheese cake.

Chocoholics, if you’re lookin’ for a local chocalatier, this is your place. When you walk in to this cute, small shop, a wave of chocolate hits your nose like velvet caressing your skin.
They have an assortment of truffles and other chocolate treats. Let’s see there was a balsamic raspberry truffle and Yazoo truffle. I had a margarita one which was pretty good, especially with the little bit of salt and lime that was on top of it. The truffles were $ 2.25 each.
I also tried the candied orange peels dipped in dark chocolate. That was yummy. The peel wasn’t terribly sweet, and the dark chocolate was complimentary to the orange.
I tried the frozen Cocoalato. It was ok. Not my favorite thing. It had chocolate and cinnamon in it, I believe, with some whipped cream on top. That was about $ 4.50.
The service was excellent. The lady who was there was so kind and friendly.
I’m not sure if I’ll come back, because it’s just expensive. Also, I am not a hardcore choco-​fanatic, I can go a while without chocolate. I can’t handle a lot of it. I may come back to try the salted caramel truffle.
You should come here to try it out. They use excellent chocolate.

I still can’t afford to indulge in the delicious truffles very much, but I had heard about this magical drink called a Cocoalato and I have to say that it was all that and a bag of chocolate chips.
Not sure if Cocoalato is in your dictionary, but just in case:
Cocoalato (noun) — An amazing chocolatey frozen concoction sure to take the edge off a hot day and send you to the moon to chill out for a while. Get the whipped cream on top and climb on board that rocket ride. Dig?
ps — Awesome vibe just to sit and chill in the comfy armchairs. Sometimes I kinda wish that all of Nashville were like Germantown (or, more specifically, like 5^th Avenue North right around Cocoa Tree)

Cool spot, because it smells really good. I like people who take pride in what they do, they know their chocolate ginoche, and truffles. I am a milk chocolate person myself, but they offer many very unique truffles.
They also have some cool leather lounge chairs, so if you want to be perfumed in chocolate scent all day, schedule an appointment to chill at the cocoa tree.

I have a policy of not trusting a chocolate shop run by a woman who weighs less than my 10 year old son (granted, he’s 5’4) but still, I was pretty flipping dubious about this place when I grabbed a sample at one of the ubiquitous Nashville food tasting events around town. Apparently ‘my’ sample became my moms sample (something about her giving birth to me and I owed her… whatever) but she loved it so much she trekked all the way to, um, nowhere (?) to buy replacements.

In spite of her normal size, the owner is one funny chick. She doles out samples enticing you to try flavors that just don’t sound appealing then lets you pick and chose what works for you with a great low key style.
She was adorably kind to my 7YO and plied her with samples and my mom reciprocated by dropping big bucks here to bring treats home to her buddies in Boston. Needless to say, I’ll be donning my 7YO costume for samples in the future.
A cute if bizarre location that is super easy to drive by is trumped by great service EXCELLENT chocolate. Downside… not a huge selection and for some freakish reason their website scares Goggle and comes with a warning it may harm your computer which is a drag. I love that they are out at these food fests working it like champs and for that you get 5 stars. But you know… fix the site… makes me feel like I’m going to a porn shop or something when I get that warning. Not that I would know about that.

We purchased truffles from The Cocoa Tree for wedding favors for our recent wedding. While this was a little bit of a splurge for us, they were absolutely delicious and we believe it was well worth the money. The Cocoa Tree also provided a discount for purchasing a large quanity which was helpful and appreciated. They also boxed up the truffles for us in our favor boxes which was an additional benefit. Our guests are still commenting on them and asking for the flavors so they can go get some more! We chose Karin’s Irish Cream and Julie Anna’s Orange because we loved the flavors and because the colors worked so well with our wedding colors. It’s been a tough call with guest «votes» so far, but I think the Irish Cream is the crowd favorite. :)

You know it is going to be good when you set foot in the shop and get hit in the face with a blast of chocolate that sends your brain’s pleasure centers to overload…
I happened by this place when I was looking to send the director of our company’s loyalty program (who happens to be a serious chocoholic), a thank you/​bribe. She swears by Godiva, but I wanted to try something that highlighted Nashville’s natural resources. And since hot chicken doesn’t ship very well, even in a gift box, I had to go with the next best thing, local chocolate.
I was the only person in there in the afternoon, and they were in the middle of grappling with some issues with their POS system. They immediately stopped to help me and walked me through their wares. I picked up a decent sized box, and they helped me fill it. I was really impressed with how honest they were when it came to describing the truffles and giving their personal opinions. Clearly engaged, committed salespeople. And, really, the prices are pretty much in-​line with chain places like Godiva, only they are WAY more creative with flavors and you can talk to the people that created the confections rather than the chain place which likely has a giant machine in a factory that craps out truffles made from god knows what.
I also grabbed a box of truffles for the wife and stealthily managed to sneak them up to her desk downtown undetected (from her secret admirer). And of course I had to get a few milk-​chocolate turtles, purely for research purposes. They didn’t last long…
Make sure you try out the salted caramel truffle — perfect flavor combo. AND the Bananas Foster truffle. And bring some cash to tip the people working there if you get good service too!

First of all, the truffles are ama-​zing! And the staff are nice to boot.
Second of all, the prices are crazy. Eight dollars for four truffles is just… wow. I guess it’s good the prices weren’t on the cards.
I’ll be back, no question about that, because they are goooood, but I would love to find a coupon somewhere.
