So I was walking by and saw this place and decided to stop in. I walked and it looked like an old school Mexican loncheria. I had the menudo and the chille relleno enchilada and carnitas taco combo. Ok the menudo was a bit bland not spicy enough for me but they do bring you onion lemon cilantro Chile and oregano. The combo plate was good the carnitas tasted as if had been reheated the service was good and freindly they have good hospitality

First started going to Pepitas in 1992 — Family owned business. Home made authentic Mexican Food. The father was running it back then and he passed away and the girls have now let a cousin run things. The new owner made the restaurant really nice. I do miss the hand made wall signs that were misspelled with the specials.(the father did those classic signs). I was worried about the food changing — The new owner he told me that it was all the same and it is. The food is still homemade — I usually get the Machaca Plate — The frijoles are the best. If your looking for great affordable Mexican restaurant without the hour wait its much better and more affordable than these new trendy Mexican places in North Park and Hill Crest. Sorry, no alcohol served, but with the money you save you can certainly afford to get two drinks somewhere after wards.

Pepita’s is a small pink brick restaurant on Highland Avenue. There are tables with umbrellas out front. It is family owned and operated. Service is attentive and friendly. I found it to be absolutely charming, although I didn’t take the owner/waiter’s hint to order the caldo de res. Instead, I opted for the chile relleno, which was, well… not that great. But later I saw a regular with the caldo that looked and smelled wonderful. I’ll go back to try that. The nice part about Pepita’s is its charm. It is small and cozy. I tucked myself into a corner booth with a book and had a nice little lunch. Plus half a star because when I sat down, their radio station played a song by my favorite band. Its got street parking, but every time I’ve driven by, there are always spots available. I parked right out front. I’ll update this review when I get the caldo de res, or if I try breakfast(word around town is breakfast is their forte).
