Had dinner here Saturday. Everything from atmosphere to service to the food was just top notch!

Walking into Mill on the Floss takes you back in time. Gold-bordered still life paintings share the walls with copper cookware, 70’s(but classy 70s) decorations are everywhere. It’s cozy and charming. All the waiters(somewhat painstakingly) wheel out the meals on long-narrow carts. The service is impeccable and ambiance is great. French onion soup and the Duckling L’Orange were both phenomenal. Duck was nice and crispy on the outside and sumptuously tender on the inside, the meat just pulled off the bone. The orange flavor was just right, not too overpowering. The sweetbreads were interesting but be sure to do what we did and get it as an appetizer if you haven’t had it before. The escargot was a little dry. My wife’s beef tenderloin was cooked to perfection but a little flavorless, I guess we were expecting a little more from the garlic sauce. Gâteau Maison was terrific(all the desserts everyone had looked amazing). Great dinner experience overall.

Date night in the Berkshires. The atmosphere here was certainly cozy. The restaurant is in an old farmhouse, with creaky floors, beamed ceilings, etc to give it character. We even got to sit near the fireplace. The menu is *very* traditional French and the service style is extremely old fashioned to match. Imagine a restaurant your grandparents would have gone to for a date and this is it. Which isn’t to say it’s all bad, but be prepared for extremely heavy sauces, boiled-to-smithereens vegetables, and the same side offered on every plate like a catering hall. On the flip side: Cocktails were tasty and generous, the onion soup was very good, and chocolate mousse for dessert made up for many sins. Essentially: splurge on the drinks, appetizers, desserts, and maybe just go with whatever entrée is cheapest because it will not be the highlight of the meal.

Great atmosphere but the criticisms of the coq au vin ring true. The use mostly white meat for the dish and it doesn’t balance well. The end result is unfortunately a very dry meal experience. I had the escargot for 1st course and it was seasoned perfectly but was extremely chewy. The crime brûlée that I had for dessert was text book and delicious.

This is a hidden gem but well worth the trip. A year round restaurant virtually in the middle of nowhere, they serve fabulous french food in a cozy, woodsy setting. They also offer special dinners on certain off-nights(sun-wed or various ow volume nights) so call ahead. Best fine dining restaurant in the northern Berkshires by far.

We ate here at the recommendation of another local restaurant manager, whose restaurant we had enjoyed. She described Mill on the Floss as an old-school, James Beard-only type restaurant, and that it was unique to the area. We agree with all of that. We ordered one prix fixe menu(available daily, I think, for about $ 30 per person for salad or soup, an entrée of the day, and dessert) and duck l’orange. The onion soup($ 4 extra for the prix fixe menu) was excellent. The duck was very good though I would have enjoyed more crispy skin. It was an older crowd type of place, but also had a stand-alone bar which seemed like it could be a cool place to hang out.

The space was warm and amazing: large wooden beams, a comfortable fireplace, rustic yet elegant. Staff was very friendly. We read some excellent reviews and couldn’t wait for dinner after our 4-hour hike. Unfortunately, the food was disappointing. I wouldn’t normally compare country restaurants to Manhattan, but their dishes were Manhattan prices. My $ 29 coq au vin was a letdown. The chicken was dry and flavorless, the vegetables were bland, and the sauce was only okay, actually a bit salty. My date’s beef bourguignon was fine, but ordinary — would’ve been acceptable as an $ 18 entrée. The butternut bisque was great. Would probably only go back for the healthy wine pours.

The Mill on the Floss is hands down the best restaurant in the Berkshires. First, it should be noted: My family and I(like so many other satisfied customers) have been going to The Mill for decades. The restaurant is tucked into a charming old house, with dark, old, and creaky panels illuminated by the giant fireplace that flanks the dining room. Everything here is cozy. The menu is traditional, classic, French; little has changed over the years. That said, all the ingredients are deliciously fresh, the service warm, endearing, and the food outstanding. I usually have the French Onion Soup and the Coq au Vin… amazing! I know many people who would die for another plate of the Mill’s sweetbreads though – fantastic! Really, I can’t think of one single complaint about this jewel of a restaurant. As I have many a time before, I will be back to The Mill On the Floss!

While visiting the Berkshires we were celebrating a special birthday, looking for a nice place for dinner. This restaurant was fabulous. Quiet, lovely atmosphere inside, and absolutely delicious food. Beautifully presented, outstanding service. Just a gem in an area with good restaurants few and far between.

Sooo average or less than. And pretty expensive. A big disappointment. They had a fairly limited menu. When you are seated they bring you water crackers and a few cubes of cheese that I did not care for at all. Then they bring you bread which was extremely crusty on the outside and overcooked on the inside. The butter must’ve been recently thawed because it was sitting in some water. Not a great start. I ordered a ginger martini that was delicious and gave me hope for a delicious meal. I ordered the salad because entrees do not include one. An $ 8 salad consisted of greens. That’s it. Nothing else. I asked for the Caesar dressing bc the house dressing was tarragon something or other and I’m not a big fan of tarragon. The dressing was completely unidentifiable and if the leaves weren’t wet I would have thought they forgot the dressing altogether. I ordered the fish of the day which was halibut with shrimp and scallops in a fennel and white wine cream sauce– or something close to that– my memory is a bit sketchy. The fish was good. The shrimp were almost overdone but still good. The scallops were good but grainy. That to me is just crazy for a dish that is $ 33 and comes with a ½ of a fingerling potato and some sad slices of summer veggies all floating in the same unmemorable sauce. My boyfriend ordered off the prefix menu. He had a salad and a petite fillet with mushrooms and onions. It was cooked well and he liked it. My boyfriend had the chocolate mousse for dessert and it was ok. I ordered the hazelnut cake something or other. Not great but not terrible. It definitely did not taste homemade. Overall a disappointing evening and a very big bill. I will not be going back. On a positive note our waitress was accomodating and attentive.

Stuffed lobster and fudge sundaes… oh my, and in a lovely room to boot. After a day at the Clark Museum and antiquing dinner here completes a perfect day.

I want to like this place really, but after two trip and two disappointing meals I can’t recommend. Last year I had the duck; it was dry and unflavorful. This year I had crab cakes and veal piccata. The crab cakes were not traditional and are remarkable uncontaminated with crab. As for the veal, the chef needs to review the recipe. Lemon and capers right? What I got was more a Marsala with lemon? It wasn’t bad but not worth money. Like I said, I want to like this place, but I just can’t reccomend.

Mill on the Floss’s ambience is worth the trip alone. The old mill-house with the old wood and dim lighting and beautiful fireplace. I always love coming here for special occassions, and it always lives up to our expectations then some. The food is wonderful, the waitstaff very professional(bordering on stiff!). Sometimes you are reluctant to spend big money at places, but it is always so refreshing to feel perfectly happy to pay a big bill when the evening was worth it. That is the Mill on the Floss!

It’s impossible to relay the difference between this restaurant and nearly every other. The fireplace, the dark laquored wood interior, the crisp white linens, the professional wait service, the chef-owned tradition for thirty plus years means you dine in a carefully attended gracious atmosphere. Every place wants your money; this place will go for your memories. Romantic, quiet, and extremely good food. It deserves ten stars, not five. I prefer it over the French Laundry.
