My 8 year old daughter attended a couple weeks of surf camp last summer and loved it. I told her she could go to any weeks it’s offered this summer and she jumped up and did her happy dance for half an hour! Our family loves their kayak and paddle board rentals on the Galien River in New Buffalo township. It is such a relaxing place to play with our kids(3&8). No fighting just lots of splashing.

Had a great time paddle boarding on the Galien River. Service was great and the equipment was as good as I could’ve asked for. The river was beautiful and we had a nice hour on the river. I do think you’ll have a lovely time on the river and the folks at Third Coast Surf Shop will take good care of you.

nice little shop on the way to new buffalo beach. A bit pricey on merch, but it’s nice to help out a smaller shop. They really know their stuff with longboards and surf boards. cool selection of merch here too. I constantly see them teaching people how to surf at the beach and it’s so fun to watch the kids surf em in all day!

On our recent trip to Union Pier R and I decided we would like to try out some paddle boarding. I gave them a call and unfortunately they couldn’t rent out boards that day because the NEXT day they had a SUP yoga class and needed all the boards. Um, ok. So we headed to New Buffalo anyway for lunch and to check out this other place about kayaks. We ended up coming here anyway and were informed that we could rent some SUP down at the beach or at the river hourly. We were stoked so we went down to the beach and rented our boards. Which turned out to be super fun. But now for the cost comparison. To rent a SUP from the shop for the whole day, roughly 7 hours, it would be $ 40 per person. To rent a SUP from the beach for an hour it’s $ 20p/p. Holy moly. Do they withhold their boards every weekend for this yoga class? Maybe, but next time I’ll know to reserve well in advance to avoid the price difference in the future. 3 stars because we still had a good time and were able to rent a couple boards, but points deducted for hourly SUP rate and the girl that answered the phone when I called didn’t offer up the info about the beach or river rentals while on the phone.

Quaint little shop in town. They have a variety of clothing and accessories as well as surfboard/paddleboard/kayak rentals. I focused more on the 50% off flip flops and sandals than the rentals during my quick shop stop. Not a huge selection by any means but they do have a decent variety. I loved the walkway back to the shop, somehow it felt very«vacationy» to me. You can also rent paddleboards and kayaks down at New Buffalo Beach but you may need to do the initial transaction at the shop. Again, I was more interested in the flip flops!

We decided to go kayaking on 6÷8÷12 at the New Buffalo location, so I called the shop and they told me their beach location was open and gave me a price for kayak rentals. However, they failed to mention that they do not take credit cards at their beach location(which I found out after paying to park at the beach and walking to the stand). I was told that their river location did, however, take credit cards, so we decided to head there. Once we arrived, we found the boy working there sound asleep. After waking him, I again asked if they took credit cards and he assured me they did. I was told I could pay after the kayak’s were returned since they charged by the hour, and we headed out. An hour later, we pulled our kayak’s in and went to the stand to pay. However, I was then informed that the card reader wasn’t able to receive signal and that we would need to pay in cash. I got very angry at this point and told him that we came there because I did NOT have cash on me, but did have a fully functioning credit card. His only suggestion was to go several miles down the road to an ATM. Being unfamiliar with the area and fed up with the miscommunications that kept occurring, I just called their office instead. I spoke to a nice lady who apologized for the inconvenience and told me she would take my credit card over the phone. I received a text notification from my bank saying the transaction went through immediately, so I asked her if she could please notify the boy at the stand that we had paid. She assured us she would. However, apparently she did not contact him because nearly a half hour AFTER I paid, I received a menacing phone call from the boy at the rental stand, who kept repeating my hometown and asking if I was heading there without paying him. I was extremely offended by his attitude and accusations towards a paying customer and am shocked that Third Coast would want someone rude like this representing their company. So while the kayaking was good, it absolutely was not worth the hassle of dealing with all of these miscommunications!!! Either find another shop next time or just go enjoy the beach.

The shop is actually a small house converted to a shop, but they have some great things to offer. You can rent surfboards, skimboards, sandboards, paddleboards, kayaks, and I sure a few other things I’m not mentioning. The staff is very friendly and they’ll be honest about what is worth renting based on the season rather than talk you into renting something that won’t work due to the weather. The store is about as quaint as new buffalo itself, but it’s definitely worth stopping in.

After much walking and hunting, we finally found the first location of Third Coast near Oink’s. The people here were really friendly and gave us a lot of useful information. We were mostly interested in kayak and bike rentals. They also have a second temporary setup in the«courtyard» near the Visitors Center, where they have some more merchandise. But the best part is the van set on the Red Arrow Highway for kayak rentals right on the river. The people were really friendly and helpful and the rates were quite reasonable too.
