Great Indian food buffet! Good selection of food and at a great price. The presentation of food is very nice and the owners are very hospitable. I loved coming here for lunch, but unfortunately they just stopped the M-F lunch buffet… This was very disappointing. Please bring it back!

I have ordered from this restaurant more than 15 times and the food has always been great, the drive is very courteous and respectful. The food always arrives hot and they pack it very well. Their mango lassi is the best I have had from an Indian take-out. Typically I order the Chicken Curry, Chicken Pakora, and the Kamal Mixed Plate.

Great service and great food. The chicken tikka masala was some of the best I’ve had. The place is quaint and the location is very good. I highly recommend.

I thought the chicken tandoori was dry and it wasn’t very good.

New Haven has its fair share of Indian food restaurants and I’ve tried just about all of them. Kamal is by far my favorite! Not only is the food the best but the service is great. They are so friendly! It’s a family run business so you really get a sense of pride and passion for the food they prepare. I usually get delivery or take out from here but I’ve eaten in the restaurant once or twice. It’s super cozy! The last time I stopped in they were renovating. Excited to see how it came out.

Favorite place for Indian food, recommend the samosas, chicken tikka marsala, sagg and all types on nann!

Outstanding, authentic Indian. Rogan Josh was spicy with good quality meat. Roti was straight out of the tandoor and I appreciated the side vegetable dishes they agreed to cook to accompany my meal.

I wish I could give this place a better rating, as the food was good… however, 2 of my items were forgotten and one was replaced by something I didn’t order. Really a bummer when you’re tired, hungry, and have curated a perfect meal only to find a crucial piece missing.

This is one of the better Indian Restaurants in New Haven. I ordered the Chicken Tikka Masala and thought it was delicious. A real bonus that will keep me coming back is their homemade hot sauce. I like a good moderate hot sauce and I have found it here. It is a remarkable blend of ingredients and spices and the«heat» does not hide a rich and complex taste. The husband and wife owners are pleasant and earnest to accommodate.

Not the best Indian I’ve ever had but also not the worst. I ordered the garlic naan, which was hot and tasty. For my entrée I ordered chicken tikka masala which was okay. It was hot temperature wise but not spicy at all. I ordered it medium. Maybe I should have emphasized my desire for spice — would suggest that to others. The chicken was well cooked and not tough. It wasn’t busy at all(3 tables total) so service was fine. Although they did have a television playing that was super loud. It seems like there are a lot of Indian restaurants in New Haven so perhaps try another one before visiting here. Again… Not terrible but nothing special.

The food is okay, but in my lamb korma lunch special, I received a bunch of rice, sauce, and four pieces of meat. In my friend’s lamb curry lunch special, she received rice, sauce, and three pieces of meat. UH.

Excellent cuisine just like I remember from years ago when I lived in a predominantly Indian & guyanese area. very authentic. Nice & friendly waitress/owner.

Ordered the Curry Chicken/Lamb Naan last night, finally was able to fall asleep this morning after using the latrine 13 or 15 times throughout the night. I don’t know if it’s because it’s been over 7 years since I’ve eaten Indian food, but this was byfar the worst thing I’ve ever eaten in New Haven.

I am writing this review as someone who has ordered their food for delivery only. I cannot speak to the quality of service or décor, however, I can speak of the food and delivery service. The food itself is generally good but some items are definitely better than others. I ordered lamb in a curry cashew broth, which was absolutely delicious and had just enough seasoning to provide a long finish with each bite. I ordered mine medium, and it was slightly mild for medium but overall very good. The vegetable samosas were also very good. However, the garlic naan was very bland and did not have much of a hint of garlic to it. Delivery was about 35 – 40 minutes, which was clearly communicated but seemed a little long of a wait for a small order. I would definitely order from them again, the food was better than most other places I’ ve tried thus far, however, I’ll be asking for extra garlic next time for my naan.

I’ve ordered delivery from Kamal twice, never been to the restaurant. The food has been really good, which is why I still gave them 3 stars. Both times, took slightly over the estimated time(about an hr) for delivery, but I only live 1 mile away. The first time, the guy called and said he was downstairs, but when I got to my lobby I waited 5 full min for him to arrive. Probably called while he was still at the restaurant. The second time, I ordered garlic naan but got plain. Small nuance, I know, but I love garlic and they charge $ 1 extra for it, so I want the garlic. If the food wasn’t so good, I wouldn’t order from them again. But I probably will.

Decent, average Indian fare. The combo platter thingamabob was a little smaller than some places, a lot of bare plate exposed between the small containers of lamb, chicken, and lentil. Also came with tandoor chicken, rice, naan, yogurt sauce and the little deep fried dessert ball in rose sugar water. Typically these places brew all their own tea so I neglected to specify for my iced tea to be unsweetened and was a little disappointed that it was Nestea or the like in a glass. Wouldn’t avoid Kamal, or go out of my way for it.

The restaurant accommodated about 20 – 25 of us for a work event. They were basically empty on a Thursday lunch, we were staying at the Courtyard around the corner, and it was a buffet — all things considered it worked out really well logistics-wise. The food was good, nothing amazing, but when work is footing the bill I definitely won’t turn down a free meal! My lunch plate: * Saag paneer — 3 stars The sauce was a little thin/watery, but still decent flavors. The paneer was pretty good, had a soft and spongy texture. * Veggies — 2.5 stars Very watery, and the veggies were soggy. * Chicken(?) & veggies — 2.5 stars The sauce, once again, was kind of thin. The chicken had a kind of shredded texture and was a little hard. * Chicken korma — 3 stars Decent, wth a pretty thick sauce. The chicken came in cubes and was pretty moist and soft. * Naan — 4 stars Pretty good, crisped yet soft. * Rice — 3.5 stars I liked the soft, fat kernels.

The food here is decent. Well priced and the delivery was quick. My only complaint is that it didn’t have enough spices. I ordered a dish that normally has some spice to it, and it was a bit bland. I’ve eaten at Indian restaurants in Nyc and Boston and this one doesn’t really compare. I don’t even think its the best in New Haven. Try Tandoor a few blocks away and compare for yourself.

This North Indian restaurant replaces what was formerly a different North Indian restaurant. As far as I can tell, the menus are basically identical(which is not surprising, given that pretty much every North Indian restaurant in New Haven serves the exact same dishes). Note for vegans: the free table rice that comes with each dish is made with milk. The waitstaff was nice enough to mention that and offered to substitute a free order of tandoori roti instead of rice(that said, we also had to buy one order of roti). If you’re vegan, this is something to ask about at pretty much any North Indian restaurant you go to. We started off with a samosa appetizer($ 3). It wasn’t bad at all, but not the best I’ve ever had either. I like it when the interior filling has fresh sweet peas and also pieces of fennel; the filling at Kamal was a big mush, but tasty enough. For our main course we shared a chana masala($ 10) and an aloo gobi($ 10). The sauces for each tasted the same and neither dish stood out in any way. These are two standard North Indian dishes and, as such, in order to impress me, they need to be special in some way. Maybe the restaurant could have added some fresh diced tomatoes and onions to the mix? Perhaps a a few pieces of cilantro? Better yet, the dishes could have been cooked for less time, so that the vegetables retained some firmness, rather than becoming mushy. The tandoori roti($ 2) was good. The service was friendly, attentive and prompt. North Indian food in the New Haven area is a dime a dozen. For my money, Kamal is virtually identical in quality and variety of offerings as Sitar, Zaroka, Tandoor and India Palace. The lone stand-out would be Thali on Orange Street which, while much pricier, also offers much higher quality food. Kamal doesn’t stand out from the rest of the pack, but it’s competent enough.
