Maurizio is great for curly hair!

The Hive is the best hair studio I’ve come across in New Haven (not to mention perhaps anywhere else I’ve lived!). The space is very cute, and everyone that works there is so nice. They charge a great price for a cut, and they do a beautiful blow dry for free to make sure everything is falling where it is supposed to. I went to Jenna for the first time last week and she definitely went above and beyond to make sure I loved my hair! I was nervous to go shorter after having long hair for a while, but she made sure the change wasn’t too dramatic and followed the pictures I showed her perfectly. She was fun to talk to and also gave me great tips on hair care and styling. I came in today because I felt I needed a small touch-​up (mostly just because I’m picky), and she spent almost 30 extra minutes on my hair at no cost to make sure it was exactly how I wanted it! I’ve also seen Dan with longer hair and he does a fantastic job as well. He regularly cuts my boyfriends hair and he looks great every time. It seems like you can’t go wrong with any of the stylists here! I look forward to coming back, and would recommend this place to anyone!

I had a wonderful experience last week at The Hive. Everyone at this intimate, two-​chair hair studio was incredibly kind and friendly. Most importantly, I walked away with a fabulous balayage color, cut, and olaplaex treatment, courtesy of Dan, and the healthiest-​looking hair I have had in months. Thank you so much, Dan and The Hive! I will surely return the next time I stop in New Haven!

I recently went to The Hive for the first time and I was lucky enough to get Maurizio. He cut my hair just the way I wanted it and it was fun to chat with him for a while. Next time I need a haircut, I will definitely go back to see Maurizio.

I was very disappointed then I came home and saw that my greys were still grey,… I called and I got the free fix but I had to go back sit there again and yes I know it happens sometimes that the color is not doing the job but not telling me there and hope I am seeing it is not the best way to handle it,…

Maurizio always does an amazing job on my hair given that I always want something out of the box. I’m a hairdresser myself and am very picky with my hair but I always leave beaming about my cut. I wish I still lived near New Haven so I could come more often!

I’m new to the area a did a ton of research before booking at The Hive. First off, this place is so darling! The intimate setting makes it feel like you have been going there all your life. It was extremely affordable for what you get! Maurizio spent over 3 hours on my hair (we both had the time) and gave me a dreamy new balayage! He laid out the process, price, and was so lovely to chat with throughout the experience. I’m getting married next year and he made a plan for me to have healthy hair for the big day. Will I go back? Yup! Booked a cut and style for later this month!
Every person that came in, left so happy and every walk-​in they couldn’t take, they offered to call at the next opening– serious service!

Dan is skilled, reliable, easy-​going, and friendly — ask him about the Walking Dead :) I’ve had him as my go-​to barber for over four years now. My hair is pretty difficult to cut, so I’m grateful that I found The Hive Hair Studio. Very highly recommended.

I love this place! By far the best hair salon in CT! I’ve had simple hair cuts by Jenna and Amanda and I loved them. But yesterday I went to see Maurizio for the fist time and let me tell you, he is BEYOND SPECTACULAR!!! My hair is super curly and not everyone knows how to work with it. When I showed him the cut I wanted to get I was expecting him to say that it wasn’t going to look good on me but instead he got very excited and that made me beyond HAPPY! The end results were phenomenal, I got exactly what I wanted. When I walked out of there I felt like a celebrity rocking and new hairstyle. My boyfriend and I are in love with the new cut.
The staff is supper attentive, friendly, funny, and very professional. I will never go to any other hair salon.

I found this place via Maurizio, who I used to go to at Orange Street Hairstyles. He is awesome! I don’t do anything fancy with my hair — it really is a basic cut — but it’s also easy to mess up, and he does it right every time. I’ve lived in a few different cities in recent years and this is easily my favorite place to get my hair cut.
The space is clean and inviting, with a central location on Whitney around the corner from Caseus.
I won’t be living in New Haven forever, and when I leave, I don’t know what I’ll miss more between the pizza and Maurizio.

Decided to try this place for the first time today for a haircut. Maurizio was incredible — so attentive and meticulous throughout the whole session. He really understood how to work with my thicker Asian hair for the short bob I was going for. I loved how palpably excited he was to see the end result :) Truly, my mind was blown by how great my hair looked at the end. Maurizio is awesome — will definitely go back to him in the future!

All 5 stars, but one thing to be aware of which I will explain below.
Cut: 5 stars. They do a beautiful job, are very meticulous, and a lot of fun to chat with! The stylists have great eyes for style and are on top of the details.
Color: 5 stars. Just got a glaze and the color came out perfectly, even though it was being matched with a faded glaze from another salon and color line. Lots of respect for the skill involved here, and I love how thorough the stylist (Mauricio? Maurizio?) was.
The odd experience I had today was when the stylist was washing the color out of my hair and asked if I wanted to dry it. What I didn’t realize, and what was not mentioned, was that the blow dry would end up doubling the cost of the service. A blowout costs $ 35, but they will of course dry it just to get the moisture out without charging you extra.
All that said– it is a truly beautiful blow dry!

I’ve gotten my hair cut at the major places in new haven as well as a few high end salons in San Francisco and really Amanda did a better job than any of these other places and charged a third as much. I found the stylists to be very professional, engaging, and totally no-​BS. Especially consider this place if you have curly hair.

Have had my hair cut by both Jenna and Amanda, after years of suffering bad haircuts from other salons in New Haven. With Asian hair, it’s not easy to find a stylist that understands it well enough to properly cut it. I’ve had my hair butchered by so many stylists who don’t understand how straight and thick Asian hair can be, so they have to be very careful when cutting layers into it. Too many times, I ask for minimal layers so that I don’t get a choppy, uneven result, and I get the exact opposite or worse — no layers at all so that it lays as one choppy mop. One time I had to get my hair re-​CUT in Asia because of a terrible experience I had at a rival salon in New Haven.
It’s relatively easy to get an appointment — they make an effort to get you in when it works for your schedule. Although I usually like the option to book online, I left Hive a message and they called me right back to schedule my haircut. They also allow walk-​ins. Jenna and Amanda are both meticulous in their attention to detail to ensure your hair is cut how you like it. They even offer touch-​ups if a day or so after the fact something doesn’t look right. They also provide expert tips on how to blow dry and style your hair to make your cut keep looking great.
The price is also very reasonable for ladies’ haircuts, which means I can go back more often than my quarterly trim.

Jenna does both mine and my husband’s hair. We’re happy with the quality and the service so far! Jenna is very friendly and easy going and listens to what you want. My hair is easy but it was a very nice haircut! She took her time with everything, but also didn’t take TOO long…

I absolutely LOVE this salon:) The owner, Jenna is a huge sweetheart! Amanda C. has magic in her fingers, I swear! If you are new in New Haven like I was… do yourself a favor and check this place out! I will be back again and again! What a great place!!!

Amanda is simply fabulous! I have been dying my hair foreverrrr! I have been very dark for many years and wanted to go platinum… scary I know! I had 3 diff salons try and every time my hair turned hot pink and after some freaked out stylist and lots of toner I always ended up this awful ginger color :/​so in steps Amanda! After a long long day at the hive I FINALLY GOT PLATINUM!!! It looks amazing! I could not be happier! Oh and I’m not bald… one would assume this sort of torture to your hair would have repercussions but nope! Healthy soft tamed platinum. Thanks girl! :)

Jenna is the best hairstylist in New Haven for people of all genders, ages, and hair persuasions. She’s the only person I have trusted to wield sharp scissors near my head for years now, and every time she does, I get a little more fabulous. Strangers have actually stopped me in public to say «Wow, nice haircut!» after I have visited The Hive.
She has cut my partner’s hair, too, and that is no small feat – this man has some complicated hair, and Jenna makes him look like a movie star. I have called her the patron saint of sexy haircuts, and I stand by that assessment.
If that isn’t enough to persuade you, Jenna’s new salon is right next to Caseus and Fashionista, making it part of the Holy Trinity of best places in New Haven. It’s convenient to East Rock and Downtown, so there is no excuse for you not to go.
If you haven’t been yet, you’re missing out on getting the best haircut and meeting the coolest lady in this city. Seriously, go now; she’s so nice she even takes walk-​ins.
