Stopped in today while strolling around New Haven with my little one. The owner was so friendly and let her try her first mochi for free! He was so sweet with her, explaining how to eat it and how it’s different that traditional ice cream. The green tea and vanilla were our favorites, and grabbed pistachio, strawberry, and blueberry to go. Some people are conflicted about the hot dog/mochi combination but I love little hole in the wall places like this. We will be back for more soon!

I, too, have no idea why Hawaiian mocha is being sold in a place that specializes in hot dogs. This is a great incongruous chasm that I haven’t quite crossed, but I like mochi so I don’t really mind. Maybe these are bought from Whole Foods, or some other pedestrian supplier like other Unilocalers have noted, but I can’t be bothered. I like them, I like the selection – everything from vanilla to pistachio to mango to lychee – and when am I going to drive all the way to Whole Foods to buy myself a package of mochis? There’s no social aspect to that. I also don’t have a car. I also can’t drive. There’s a card minimum, so bring cash, bring a friend, or prepare to eat at least three mochi. I can testify that the latter is definitely the easiest of the three options, but the last two options also aren’t mutually exclusive. Do as you will.

The mochi store is oddly combined with a hot dog store. They are reasonably priced, so feel free to grab a friend and try a few flavors and split them! My favorites were the red bean and mango. Like others said, I’d let them thaw out for a few minutes rather than biting into them immediately.

Cute little place actually inside jakes hot dog shop. Came here and chose the green tea, pistachio and tiramisu, all awesome but my favorite was the pistachio. The last one we chose because of the owners suggestion, mango, equally as delicious.

I am only a fan of the mochi sold at the store. The store is located in a downtown business district(at least it appears to be) area which on a Sunday is totally deserted with the exception of a bar/pub down the block. The store name is no longer«The Mochi Store» but rather«Jake’s». It now sells burgers, hot dogs, other greasy food and Mochi. The menu wall is still the same as other Unilocaler’s pictures. The place is tiny and smells like burger/hot dog. The mochi is stored in a freezer and the girl who helped appeared to use a tong when she put was packaging the mochi. I seriously thought she used her hands a couple of times. The Mochi is $ 1.80 a piece and I bought the following flavors: Passion Fruit — not much passion fruit taste Sakura — taste like vanilla ice cream with a hint of sakura Li hing Mango — much more rich mango flavor — kids were not fans chocolate peanut — very good tiramisu — rich in flavor Lychee — refreshing I like the variety in flavors. I am surprised I don’t like the fruity flavors more. Definitely a grab a go place. I grabbed and ate it in the car.

I don’t really get it. The texture and concept is interesting but as far as desserts go, this one got lost on me. It’s not all that sweet or rich and the flavors are very muted. None of the things I look for in a dessert. Maybe they’d make a nice cool treat on a summer day but as far as something sweet after dinner, didn’t really do the trick and definitely not cost effective.

First of all this place is now a hotdog place as well a a mochi«store». If you’re coming here for mochi, skip it. It’s store bought, a brand from Hawaii that you can buy at wholefoods… If you want mochi that you won’t find at whole foods, go to Hong Kong Market on Whitney.

It is still located at the same address but now it goes by another name. Jakes? I think it was? Theres a little sign out on the street. You can’t miss if you your walking but if your driving the store looks completely different. On the sign it does say it sells hot dogs, burgers and mochi. The workers are friendly and you just tell them which flavors you want and they box it up for you. I would have liked to know which flavors I was eating because I practically got one of each flavor. It was really good and not too expensive.

This is a great place. However, it is not called Jakes Hotdogs or something like that… lol. They have a small but decent selection. The Mochi is bursting with flavor and I just could not get enough. The price is around $ 150 per mocha. I will certainly be returning.

Small, unassuming place but a LOT of mochi flavours! $ 1.50 each which is reasonable! The red bean was disappointing — a bit flavourless, but the other flavours were great — the chocolate coconut, sakura(like cherry blossom) was good and by far my favourite was the green tea! Nice little mostly guilt-free treat!

As the weather warms up, you need to check this place out for a little treat. Just be aware that it’s the same space as «Jake’s Diggity Dogs.» I’ll probably darken the door whenever I’m in the area :)

This is a cute hot dog store that also happens to sell mochi. A friend was craving some Japanese dessert deliciousness so we headed over here and it did not disappoint. There are a variety of flavors you can choose from and the mochi dough itself is very soft and chewy with the cold icy delight of icecream hiding in the middle of it. This is a good place to stop by and pick up some mochi, especially for a «treat yourself moment» after a long day!

I visited this place tonight after reading their reviews. It’s a little cozy store adjacent to jeera thai. I was greeted by the owner who is very nice and pleasant btw. I settled for a trismu Moochi which was so good even in freezing cold. Then I ordered Chicago style hotdog. Settled for a plain bun because they don’t have whole wheat. It was good but messy to eat. I guess I am a clumsy eater. The only con for me is that Moochi here is overpriced for the size of it. Overall it was a good experience.

Unilocal sent me here. I went here after eating at Louis’ Lunch. The Mochi Shop is located inside a hot dog shop called Jake’s Diggity Dogs. So do not get confused. The mochi menu takes up the entire right wall. They have a variety of flavors from the traditional mochi flavors you can get at any Japanese restaurant(Green Tea, Red Bean and Strawberry) to some unique flavors such as Tiramisu and Raspberry White Chocolate. I tried the Tiramisu, Raspberry White Chocolate, Li Hing Mango, Passion Fruit, Lychee and Guava. I don’t have anything negative to say about the flavors I tried. My personal favorite flavors out of the six above are Raspberry White Chocolate and the Li Hing Mango. There was only one employee working when I went. He was very friendly and answered some of my questions about certain flavors. Next time I am back in New Haven, this place will definitely be on the list of places to eat.

Rest assure if you are looking for The Mochi Store and you end up in a hot dog joint, you’re without question in the right place. Tons of flavor to choose from. Look to the left wall and you will see the hotdog/burger menu. Look to the right and there there it is… the mochi menu. Great choices to pick from.

It’s kind of misleading to call this place ‘The Mochi Store’ when it’s not really a store. It’s just a tiny hot dog shop run by a very amicable guy who sells mochi out of a floor ice cream freezer behind the counter. His supply was super limited too, so we didn’t get to try many of the $ 1.50 pieces. We did, however, try the tiramisu, which was fantastic! The blueberry was pretty spot on too. If I’m ever in the area again(which probably won’t be any time soon, as I’m from Baltimore), I’d stop in to try more. But since I won’t be, I’ll just go to Trader Joe’s and a local gourmet grocery to get my mochi fix.

Found on Unilocal. It’s a hotdog and mochi shop/restaurant. My sister loves mochi, so we had to stop and check it out. We only got mochi, but the hot dog menu was extensive and looked delicious. We got 10 mochi, all different flavors, and split them to each try them all. The owner, a really nice and friendly guy, gave us a free flavor of the month mochi. Speaking of, the flavors of the month were watermelon and honeydew. All 11 were delicious that we tried. I think we got the following flavors: honeydew, green tea, chocolate peanut butter, lychee, tiramisu, li hing mango, raspberry white chocolate, pistachio, strawberry dark chocolate, Sakura, and… another one. Stop by! They’re all delicious. And there’s a Thai place next door that’s pretty good and really quick.

The sweetest hole-in-the-wall find in New Haven! Yes, the delightfully frozen mochi came in an assortment of flavors, but the owner was also great to chat with! The mochi selection was none I’ve seen before with Strawberry Dark Chocolate, White Chocolate Raspberry, Li Hing Mango, Chocolate Coconut, and more, it was really difficult not to order one of all the 19 flavors. At $ 1.50, I wasn’t ready to splurge $ 30 on mochi so we picked our favorite 9(and, sadly, they were out of Lychee and Chocolate Peanut Butter). The mochi brand they sold is called Bubbies, imported from Hawaii. Why have I not seen this sweet treats after two trips to the beautiful islands? I’m glad I had them today on a perfectly warm day. The store shares the same storefront as Jake’s(actually, these two business listings, should probably be just one) that sells some interesting hot dogs topped with mac and cheese. This place is definitely worth a swing-by if you’re in the area!

The Mochi Store was amazing when it was open… but I’m pretty sure they closed a few months ago. Sadness. No more mochi for you.
