Amazing food. I’m a vegetarian and I liked the black beans and the fried rice. Must try place and the dessert options are great.

My first time at a Peruvian restaurant and it was a delicious heaven. I just tried the vegetarian dishes though, yet they were very good. The vegetarian fried rice had a unique flavor. The beans(side dish) were very flavorful. Highly recommend those. The dessert was also good !!! Loved it. The service was just fantastic. I said I liked the green sauce and the waiter gave some to go as well.

Wow! Expect to be treated like family! Comfortable atmosphere and the food is… AMAZING! TODIEFOR! Appetizer we had was Papa Rellena… so phenomenal… We had the Cevichón de Pescado which was on point! We also ordered Bistec a lo Pobre which was so flavorful… a must have! We were so full that we took home at least half the plate as the portions are huge. Made sure to take home Flan(too full to eat it here)…will return again and again! Truly a pearl in New London!

This Peruvian restaurant is a very casual mom and pop restaurant. It’s not very large and contains roughly ten tables. Empty seats are hard to come by on the weekends because it does tend to get busy on those particular days. The food is good. It’s typical Peruvian fare so that means lots of chicken, beef, and carbohydrate items are on the menu. Peruvian food reminds me a lot of American food, but instead of meat and potatoes there’s a lot of meat and rice. Not a whole lot of greens. Oh, and french fries are popular too, just like in America. I’ve had several of their dishes, including beef, chicken, and fish. The fish was civiche. For those that might not know civiche is basically cold fish that’s been soaked in lemon/lime juices for a very long time. I like Peruvian food, I just don’t love it. I find a lot of it to be somewhat bland but it’s a nice change of pace for something different. Eh hot sauce is always available if you want to spice things up. Their green sauce provides a nice burn. Prices are OK. They’re not bad but some of the seafood items are a little pricey. Bah seafood can be like that. Portion sizes are fairly large and one portion could actually feed two people.

I’ve eaten here a couple times now. LOVEIT! I believe this was my first foray into Peruvian food and I just can’t get enough! I can eat the salsa criollo by the quart! Now that I’ve tried Peruvian food elsewhere I can say this is so much better! The huacatay is so good. They have some kind of lunch take out or dinner or whatever certain days with chicken and other things. Love their plantains… I think I first had the bistec encebollada YUMMMMM!!! I’ve had the yucca… it’s ok… I’d get it again but not every time. Prefer the plantains but they taste quite banana-ey and fairly sweet… whereas I am used to either fried plantains with salt… or pan cooked and smushed, again with salt, but more dry seeming. These were wet and sweet and soft like bananas… Finally had the ceviche, it was my first one. Nice and fairly spicy… and didn’t mind the«naked seafood» even the tentacles which I usually don’t like in calamari. Have I said already how much I love their huacatay? I have sampled their purple corn drink and the passion fruit. THEN I mixed them, asked if anyone else does that, it’s not common but it’s been done. I tell you that created an ENTIRELY new flavor that did NOT taste like the two mixed together but so different! The waitress I have had was very pleasant but kind of… forgetful or out of it sort of… but nice enough where as long as it was corrected it didn’t bother me. But I’m thinking for takeout, verify what’s in the bag before you leave. The Inca cola is SOGOOD! And tastes like all the flavors people say it tastes like… I can taste lemon verbena, the bubblegum… etc. I think I have tried the dessert that’s the purple corn plus the rice pudding. It’s good. I’d get it again occasionally but not often. Then again I’m not much of a dessert person but as far as those go seems healthier than your typical dairy, carb and gluten heavy kinds. It was interesting to try that giant corn with the ceviche. I don’t even know where one could get that! Also the onions that came with the steak, I don’t know what they did but they were SOGOOD and the tomatoes too! HOW are they seasoning it so yummily! One time my friend got that takeout special. Yum yum yum! I tried the chicken soup once… I loved the broth and taste but I don’t love meat on the bone and it took up so much room and was kind of pricey… I’d rather just have a big bowl of chicken broth. The red sauce I don’t enjoy quite as much but still eat it all… nice and spicy. My friend and I, actually the one who recommended the place when I was in Hartford, we had gotten takeout of the chicken and I think plantains and maybe salad and fries I think… it was pretty good. I think it’s a good deal. The thing is I love the taste of Inca cola but soda is so horrendous for you. And I think Pepsi owns Inca now so it’s all corn syrup… It’s not cheap food but it’s so darn good and well seasoned… If you can, I’d recommend eating in so you can have more sauces, ask questions, verify you got the right things etc… I will admit I haven’t always felt the best walking back to my car so I like to park as near the door as possible. One day there was a guy leaning into another car talking and I am pretty sure I saw a knife in holster in his jeans… not really used to that. It’s kind of far for me so I wouldn’t want to go all that way myself but if I were in the area, I can’t think of anywhere else I’d rather go. Not sure what else to say. I just cannot get enough of their salsa criollo… best ever. Tried making it myself… wasn’t the best the first time, was better later but still… theirs can’t be beat! And it’s nice to support a small family business. We have a large Puerto Rican population where I am. I would trade 1000 of whatever food is around due to them to get this place near me!(Granted most PR food I’ve had is pretty unhealthy and fried) this place seems pretty healthy especially the ceviche. And the best darn flavors around! I guess I’ll add more next time I go :)

Amazing food and great service. Even though the name of the place depicts they sell chicken, they also have great Peruvian seafood dishes

Stopped by here on our way to Long Island from Mystic. Opted for this place due to great reviews since, they claim that this place has the best chicken. Ordered the famous chicken and, to my surprise the server said that there’s no more chicken…” Whatttt” your signature dish and you are telling me you don’t have it. So I settled for the Chicharron de Pescado which it was good. The server was horrible, has no attention to guests and I had to ask her for a cup with ice five times. The place was half empty so there was no excuse for them to take close to 30 mins to prep our dishes. They served me a side order of Maduros which were raw. The food was average nothing great about it and, the service was Horrible.

On our eternal quest to pokeman all the restaurants in the area(gotta eat em all!), we stumbled twice upon Pollos Ala Brasa. My exposure to Peruvian food was somewhat limited to some mediocre to decent Peruvian joints in Sonoma county, but nothing to blow up my skirt about. On my first bad cold in Connecticut, I begged my darling husband to find me some soup. Upon my urging, he returned from Pollos with a chicken cilantro soup with peculiarly shaped meat items that were so strange that we called them mystery meat. The soup base itself was good, but with my overwhelming uncertainty on what exactly the meat came from, I quickly lost my appetite. On our return trek with another couple, we were ready to try something different and all steered clear of the mystery meat soup which ended up being chicken gizzards. We started with chicha morada, the traditionally spiced purple corn drink, and yucca fries. The sauces the fries came with were amazing, but the fries themselves were unremarkable and sorely undercooked. For our main courses, we sampled the pollo saltado, lomo saltado, bistec encebollado, and the pollo milenesa a la pobre. We were all surprised with the gigantic sizes, but the pobre was the largest… which left over three days of lunches after my husband put a significant dent into it. I was sad to have eaten too much to have room for flan, but on my return trip I plan to try it and the garlic shrimp entrée. We had a long wait to order and be all served despite a somewhat unbusy evening. Also the waitress didn’t know what the sauces were that she served us or what was in them which was discouraging. Overall a good food experience with large portions and a vast menu, but you should probably speak some Spanish to get through it because the servers aren’t equipped to guide you through it. Will definitely return to give the menu a thrice over.

Ordered the«Bistec a lo pobre» & «Milanesa a lo porbe» and both were amazing! Definitely recommend. Can’t comment on the service because we ordered to go but the food is absolutely amazing.

This restaurant is somewhat a hole in the wall, in a pretty sketchy neighborhood. Definitely somewhat of a hidden gem! I ordered half a chicken and a tamale. Their tamales are pretty big, double the size of a normal size tamale. The half of chicken was plenty for two. We even had left overs. Try the inka cola, if you like soda. It’s good.

Wow. What a find! Thanks Unilocal for pointing it out! Really close to the coast guard academy if ur there for an event. This is an authentic Peruvian spot. We r the only non-Peruvian here for the lunch this Saturday. ;-) The Inka Kola is a nice change of pace from Pepsi/Coke products. A unique bright yellow color but delicious. The passion fruit is a terrific juice. The half chicken is generously sized and up nearly instantly served. It is so tender and juicy. Yet the skin is crispy and delicious bThe beans r good and the hot sauce is super flavorful. The ambience is great. I could almost imagine being in Peru. We had the weekend special soup as well Paslaca(so.) which was also delicious. With beef, tripe and who knows what else. If u like tripe then u will like this. A nice spot to take in the food and another place in the world…

ATTENTION to anyone driving on I-95 between New England and the Tri-State. Seriously forget the rest stops, and your Roy Rogers and whatever else nonsense is at your next Molly Pitcher rest-stop. Get to Pollos a la Brasa Cj in New London, Connecticut!!! Plain and simple. We ordered a half Pollo a la Brasa for 10 bucks which comes with a mountain of french fries and salad. I also HAD to have cilanto and red onion salad in lemon juice, and we added a side of beans. Both bombtastic. I need to be a spokesperson for Peruvian chicken. There is no other cuisine that has mastered the art of chicken. None! Flavor to the bone, soft and moist(sorry, I also hate that word). The seasoning on this bird was a little fancier and extra delicious. If you’re wondering why I’m being stingy with the last star. It’s because they became experimental with a Peruvian trademark, the Aji Verde(green sauce). It’s a fraud, and I was so disappointed. This could easily be a five. Anyway, set off your blinker and get off the exit for New London, CT!!!

Pollos a la Brasa is a Peruvian style restaurant with good service, home-made appeal, and delicious food. I’m basing my review on one trip, don’t make your decision on just my review. Also this is my first time eating at a Peruvian restaurant, so I have nothing to compare it to except all the Hispanic restaurants I’ve been to. I had the Pork Tamale, an appetizer, the Ceviche Mixto as my entré, and Quiche as my drink. The tamale was great, it was big enough for two to share, and it was slightly salty but the sweetness from raisins and umami flavor from pork compensated for it. The Ceviche Mixto was an enormous serving and could be split between 3 people. It was comprised of several shrimp, a few mussels, one clam, tilapia, octopus, calamari, and sides a potato and sweet potato. I was disappointed that they used tilapia, a fresh water fish instead of any other salt water fish, which would of made a true seafood dish. Overall, the food was good, the menu huge(next time I’m in New London, I’m going to get Peruvian Chinese food on the menu), but the price were a little high. My buddy got the Shrimp Paiea and it was more expensive then the Ceviche.

This place is authentic and delicious. The food is like a home cooked meal — you feel like you are a guest in someone’s house — or even better, like your own aunt is cooking for you. This family operation is easy to miss if you are driving by and it is nothing fancy but is worth hunting down! I ordered a dish with steak, fries, rice, onions, egg, and plantains and started with a chicken tamale and shared it with a friend and both were so good! The tamale is massive as was the steak dish. My friend got paella which was also very good. I can’t wait to go back to this place!
