I got the worst haircut of my life here a few years ago. I arrived for my 2pm appointment that I had scheduled the previous day. I had to knock for several minutes before Sylvia finally came to the door, I think she had been asleep and forgotten about my appointment, she had the exact look of someone who had just rolled out of bed(messy hair, heavy eyelids). I had heard good things about this place, and I didn’t want to be judgmental, so we got started with me telling her how I wanted my hair cut. I told her I wanted my hair shoulder length, and the most important thing was that it still be long enough to put into a ponytail. I also said I wanted it slightly angled towards the back, and demonstrated with my hand what I meant. Well, I ended up with chin length hair in the middle of summer, it took several months for it to grow back enough to put into a ponytail. She also angled it in the wrong direction, towards the front, a VERY unflattering cut for my face shape. This was almost 5 years ago, and I’m still traumatized by the whole experience. She’s very friendly and seems cool, but ultimately, she completely ignored what I asked her to do and I was stuck with a look that I hated for months. The only way to change it would have been to get a very short haircut, which is the only thing I could have hated more than the angled bob I ended up with. Not cool. I’ve never had a problem getting a decent cut from stylists with various levels of experience, even when I’ve gotten student haircuts. I would like to point out that, my real problem was that I gave her two very clear and easy instructions, and she failed to meet them both. She was technically proficient and the haircut would have looked good on someone else, but it was not what I asked her to do. It’s like hiring someone to paint your house green, but instead they paint it red. I’m sure this stylist is more capable than she was on the day she gave me my cut, but her business practices were unprofessional and she should be more careful about waking up on time when she knows she has an appointment. If she had just been honest and said she needed a cup of coffee or didn’t feel well, I’d have been happy to wait a little while or reschedule. I wrote this review to warn people that they may not want to get a cut here if something seems off when they arrive, and also to let Sylvia know how truly upset I was by my reflection in the mirror every day for many months, so she can learn to be a better stylist and not do this to anyone else. She came highly recommended to me, and I couldn’t have been more disappointed. She was clearly having an off day, and I had to pay the price of that for months. Sorry if this review seems long and ranty, I’m really not the type to hold a grudge for so long, but when you hate what you see in the mirror every day because of another person’s carelessness, it can be truly traumatizing in a way that stays with you for a long time.

I love this salon! I went in to get my hair done by Sylvia, the last week in May 2015. I haven’t been this happy about my hair in years, I felt that my hair turned out fantastic! I felt that everything I said WASHEARD, and I got exactly what I asked for, and it turned out better then I imagined, Androgny House of Design has a new client for life!!! BTW, anyone who«wonders» if the owner works from home, has never stepped foot inside this salon! I WOULDHIGHLYRECOMMENDTHISBUSINESS!
