I really don’t know why people are giving this place four or five stars! Totally ripe off! First off there is no salt or flavor in any of the food. I got a fish taco and pulled pork taco. Both were VERY bland, no flavor, no salt. The shells them self was good, but to change more for some topping is crazy! $ 15 for two tacos! Wft! I really miss terrapin taco, which was in there a few years ago. Décor was very cool! They are very nice there. It’s just a shame that the food wasn’t that good.

Wow. Just wow. Everytime I eat here it’s nothing short of amazing. The freshness of the food is unparalled for block island, and I cant say enough about the divine, made to order guacamole. Iv had guac many times but iv never had it so expertly crafted. It cannot be replicated, it is pure green perfection. The fish taco is on point, great flavor and beautifully constructed served with fresh lime and a small cup of delicious spicy sauce. The tortada sandwich is BIG in size and even bigger in flavor with so many layers of lip smacking satisfaction it can be akin to a religious experience. The sauces they provide are extrordinary, the red is spicy but not over the top and the subtle smokiness makes this sauce so good I could drink it with a straw, same for the mellow, slightly sweet green chili sauce. This isnt just mexican food for the sake of being different to lure in tourists who might not be into seafood, chef/owner Hugo is seriously talented and you can taste it in every bite. Do not pass up calaveras!

Very good food and service with a nice clean looking kitchen. We ordered onsite for take out and the wait was probably about 10 – 12 minutes for 8 tacos, nachos and guacamole, a tostado and a few sides. This was on a Friday during peak season, so the service was very fast, which is a huge upgrade over the previous taco shop that was here. The fish tacos and pork tacos were awesome and would easily recommend. The guacamole is a bit heavy on the cilantro, which is fine for me, but some in our group were overpowered by it. It is really good food and fairly reasonable for Block Island prices.

Food is excellent, fresh and flavorful. Dishes are well-prepared. Delicious. Service is efficient and friendly. Great all-around. My teenage sons came nearly every day for the whole time we were on BI. Great addition to restaurant choices on Block.

Great, authentic Mexican and so fresh! Our family of 4 sampled tostadas, a quesadilla and a bowl with a variety of carnitas, pulled chicken, beans and rice, fantastic pico and avocado. All delicious.

Can’t wait for a table to free up at Ernies for breakfast? No problem, just walk across the street to Calaveras for a quick breakfast burrito. That’s exactly what I did and it worked out great. Less time spent waiting indoors translated to more time spent outdoors on the island. The interior of Cavaleras was nicely decorated in bright colors and the outdoor tables seemed really inviting. There’s outdoor tables in front on the patio and also on a little grassy side lawn. I’d return again to try their more traditional Mexican food. You’re probably thinking, huh, you mean Mexicans don’t fill their burritos with scrambled eggs and potatoes for breakfast. Eh, probably not.

Best Mexican food in RI, outstanding breakfast burritos and tacos! Only thing I would recommend to the mgmt is to hire more staff to decrease wait time. It would also be awesome if over time they got an alcohol licence to be able to offer margaritas and beers with meals!

We grabbed some tacos to take out on the beach for lunch … and yum! Can’t say enough about how good they tasted. Only four stars because of the 15+ minute wait for 8 tacos, and ~$ 4 for a taco is a bit pricey(but what can you expect for Block Island??). Friendly staff, good food … great takeout for the beach! Call ahead if you can.

Best tacos on the island. Quick walk from the ferry or the beach at ballards. Highly recommend

My husband and I were«jonesin» for fish tacos so we stopped in Calaveras. It’s a modest little restaurant with BIG flavor! While fish tacos were not on the menu, the cook heard me ask the hostess and said, no problem, he would make them for us. The fish was caught that morning(spear-fisherman) and the chef grilled it to perfection. Everything was fresh, delicious and quite inexpensive. Highly recommend! PS. The chef told me they would be adding fish tacos to the menu in the near future.

Just opened next to the book store in the post office building. One of the best meals we’ve had on Block in several years and the most creative Mexican food this side of Chicago. The Torta Milanese was totally unique and the agua frescas were wonderful. Most of their clientele are currently locals, but with one of the best views on the island, it won’t take long for the summer crowd to discover this spot. Looking forward to another visit when we’re back in August.

Excellent food. Best Mexican I’ve had in a long time. The chopped steak taco is awesome(get it with pico de gallo, cilantro, and avocado), the black bean soup delicious, and if you get a chance to taste the homemade arepa, definitely go for it. Oh, and I don’t normally care for tomatillo salsa, but I put theirs on everything… If I could buy it by the bottle I would. Décor has some cool art, and the outdoor seating has an incredible view. Friendly staff, relaxed and efficient service. Byob. Great place to bring kids!

Just opened a few days ago, fantastic Mexican food, owners are super nice and friendly. The horchata was delicious, salsa verde and free chips much appreciated, but the highlight was the nopales, avocado, Oaxaca cheese soft taco the chef made for us upon finding out we are vegetarian. This was undoubtedly the best Mexican food I’ve had in Rhode Island, at extremely reasonable prices(especially for block island!). Later this summer he said they will be adding fish tacos — we will be back!
